Depends on how much you're willing to spend. There's a different bang for buck card at each price range. If your budget is only about $100, then you would be best off buying a HD3850 or Geforce 8800GS. If your budget is between that and $200, you can consider the cheaper Geforce 9600GT or the more expensive Geforce 8800GT. If your budget is around $250, the Geforce 512MB 8800GTS will be best. For around $350, probably 2x8800GT in SLi would give you the best bang for buck.

If you're looking for best $ to FPS ratio at max settings, it would have to depend on the game you play. For example if all you're going to play is Warcraft 3 or something, then the best bang for buck would be a second hand ATI 9000 series or something for $10-20 off eBay. If you're thinking about Crysis, then it would have to be 2x8800GT in SLi.

Note that my pricing might be a bit off as I live in UK.

your pricing is way off going by the dollar amounts you gave budding. i'm guessing that is the uk currency meaning the ratio would be close to what we pay in us currency. i don't know. i'm assuming you're talking about desktop cards too. add about 100-200 dollars to those range in prices for the desktop cards.

if you're looking for a desktop card mpstyles, the 8800 gs is probably best bang for buck overall. it'll set you back about 200 bucks. if you're looking for a mobile card, it's harder to say what the best bang for the buck is because you're buying more than just a card. i would think the 8600 gt is the best value, and you're better off if it's a 256 mb gddr3 version.

Good suggestions I think.. but I dunno where you can get an HD3850 for under $150, but still for the performance it would be a good card.. but far as the benchmarks I've seen the equivalent price 9600GT beats it. Though I suppose it all would matter on what games they want to play.. I think the $200 8800GT, if the games they want to play would actually benefit from it, would be the only other option to the 9600Gt I'd prob consider, personally.

I really think people exagerate what is needed for Crysis. I know someone who plays with 8600gt sli on max settings zero lag, as well as someone who plays with a single 8800gt on max settings zero lag.
