I've been meaning to ask the same question since I'll be getting my new vista laptop with an x1400 within the next couple of days.

I agree, I have an X1400 with Vista Business 32bit and 7.1 was kind of buggy, 7.2 seems very solid and helped with gaming performance in CS:S and WoW. Can't wait for 7.3, hopefully some more improvements.

Vista automatically implements a dynamic mechanism to share system memory for use of the GPU kind of like Hypermemory. That is why it reports a higher amount of memory. I wouldn't be surprise if a 8800GTX also gets its 768MB of VRAM extended too, but in theory, if it doesn't need it it won't take it from system RAM so it shouldn't have performance negatives.

    Then why does mine say:

    Driver Provider: ATI Technologies

    Driver Date: 1/8/2007

    Driver Version: 8.332.0.0

If 7.2 is the newest, how do I have 8.332.0.0 and SHOULD I go with 7.2?

The Best Drivers for Vista as of now until they are fully developed will be the latest version.

But which one is later, 7.2 or 8.332.0.0 - where did this 8.332.0.0 come from?

    Poor you.

I'm using the 7.2's for the next few days, they seem to be a little faster than the 7.1's.

For DoubleBlack: 7.2 = 8.8342.0.0, I think yours are 7.1. The longer number is just the specific driver version, where Catalyst Version 7.1, 7.2, etc are more of a package version which includes an updated Catalyst Control Center and drivers. To check your Catalyst Version, just open up Catalyst Control Center and under the "Information Center" drop down it'll list what you have next to "Catalyst Version."

Well I don't have the Catalyst Control Center, just the driver is installed - so since I have 7.1, I'll update from ati.com - my current driver was pushed through Windows Update a little bit before retail release, before I was using BETA drivers.

Is it recommended to have the Catalyst Control Center too?

I kept getting an error while trying to install CCC on Vista 32-Bit, so I just gave up...but hopefully these "7.2" drivers are better!

They do, but are you on battery? If so, the video card automatically clocks down.
Yes, go ahead and install the CCC.

I'd recommend everyone using an ATI video card under Vista upgrade to the 7.2 drivers, I have found them to give better performance.
