I want to get a new mouse (coming from the MX 518 which I loved and used for 7 years). I tried out the G500 and the Roccat Kone Pure; neither of which I like. I could see myself getting a G400 or a G5 (I heard mixed reviews, perhaps someone can enlighten me on which is better) and I am also considering the performance MX (so long as there is no input delay).

I play Battlefield 3 and CS.

    What do you guys think?

Big fan of Steelseries Sensei if you want to check it out. Right or left-handed and enough buttons where you have function but not so many it's absurd.

^ I am looking for the design where there are only two buttons (3 max) in the thumb region (forward and back buttons). Not the type with a bunch of buttons on the side. Can you recommend a good one?

I use the cyborg RAT 5 and love it. I would get the RAT 7 though as it offers more customization.

I also don't like the sand paper-ish texture of the G500. Really dislike it.

Probably the G400 and (don't kill me) the deathadder

They both have really good sensors

I've had a Razer Deathadder for a while and I love it. I mostly play FPS also, and I just love the way it feels in your hand.

No issues with MX518 and Performance MX. I stay away from Razer, and will never recommend any Razer product.

Any new mouse today will have plenty of polling, dpi setting for any game today. Go with what feels best in your hands. That's it. Don't believe any of the bs that comes with gaming mice and reviews. Just buy something you feel at one with.

I can also vouch for the deathadder. It's a beauty and though big, is easily attuned to. Mine is the 3500 DPI model.

Find a mouse that can change DPI on the fly. Increasing the DPI is useful when you hop into a turret with a low rate of turn, and decreasing the DPI for long range sniping.

The mouse should also come with a software for binding keys for specific programs or saving them on the mouse.

I have the logitech g9 and it's still going strong

Been using the performance mx for about 3 years and have no complaints. I have the thumb button bound to dpi change and it works great for sniping. Might not have as high of dpi as some of the others mentioned, but I bought it partly because it has a professional look so I can game with it and use it for business.

I've never had a problem using even the cheapest mouse for gaming. The extra DPI doesn't make much of a difference unless you're at the pro-gaming level. That being said, I do like the MX Revolution.

I'm still on my MX 518. This mouse has sentimental value to me and I would suggest not to shy away from cheaper brands for that they're not worse than top of the line goods.

There IS a difference between high DPI/low sensitivity and low DPI/high sensitivity. But I'd say that difference is about 2-3% in basic precision. In those crucial moments, it could help, but unless you're someone who has a career riding on it or are just flat out an enthusiast/perfectionist, then it won't help as much. Polling rate is about the same. The two together give about a 5-8% accuracy boost for me.

On the flip side, my sensitivity has been described as "how the HELL can you hit anything with that it's so high!?!" so I don't know how super low sensitivity players work. That being said, high DPI/high sens can be quite powerful, just like low sens can. It depends on what feels most natural to the user.

Unless you're trolling in which case shame on you *wags finger disapprovingly*

What benefit can one possibly get from 8400 dpi? They are always trying to pump the dpi numbers higher and higher for no benefit to the end user. After 1600-1800dpi gaming mice became the norm, I never heard anybody complaining about needing more dpi than that. 1800dpi on a 1920x1080 monitor at a 1:1 ratio is quite twitchy. But new mice with ever higher dpi were released, and it seemed like the only people in favor of higher dpi were those who were uninformed and regurgitating the marketing spiel of "higher precision."

I do agree that 8400 is unnecessary. I use 3500, but I can't see why anything beyond say... 5400 or so would ever be wanted by anyone.

A Microsoft Intellimouse like the Explorer 3.0. If you're a low-sens FPS gamer without need for a bunch of extra buttons nothing comes close. You can lower the DPI on the other modern gaming mice to match the IE 3.0 but they just don't perform as well at that setting. There's a reason bunches of pro FPS players over the years swear by this mouse.

Too few corsair M60 users (altho I think now it's M65), so I will mention it again :D very solid construction of durable aluminium and the huge "sniper" button to drastically change dpi while pressing it to ensure smooth sniping is awesome.

I had an mx-510 (I think) and then an mx518 which I loved just like you. The weight and everything was perfect. I went with the Sensei mouse and have NOT looked back. It has the best precision and I think it is considered the best FPS mouse out there. I haven't read through the entire thread yet but I have to say it blows the mx-518 out of the water and makes CS:S/CS:GO so much more enjoyable.

Many mice have easily reachable dpi switching buttons. I would rather hit a button to switch the dpi than hold a button down the whole time. But what is really elite is having the same button that toggles the sniper scope also switch your dpi.

There is no mouse that any majority considers the best gaming mouse. For example, lots of people view the MX518/G400(s) or Deathadder as better than the Sensei.

I have an old Razer Orochi that I just love. It's small and easy to carry, it's Bluetooth so no dongle, you can use it with the included USB cable which is braided and quality, it's only got 2 buttons on each side, it's symmetrical so lefties can use it. The config panel runs off the driver and is quite customizable. Easy to swap batteries.

Downside is it burns batteries fast, in wireless mode it keeps going to keep and you have to nudge it awake constantly. Wireless mode also lowers dpi, but I don't like high dpi anyway, I find it so much easier to line up shots etc in lower dpi. I frankly don't understand how anyone maintains control with 8k+ dpi. But then again I always lose :D. Some of you guys are just plain stupid fast with your running jumping gunning, I don't get it, it doesn't even seem possible.

Fair enough. I used them all, I used to play competitive and I find the one I mentioned best. My preference. The mx518 is great and you can't go wrong with the majority but the Sensei is notably higher on my list than any other.

I used to do pretty well at LAN parties with the MX500 after my Intellimouse Explorer died, so I mostly just use the G400 out of nostalgia. Every gaming mouse has its ups and downs, but I can say for sure that both the G400 and the Sensei belong to a smaller group of gaming mice that don't have many downsides. At that point it is really just personal preference, because there is no overall quantitatively superior mouse. Besides, the reality of gaming mice is that performance isn't much of an issue; it is price, features, and feel that are most important. And even the crappiest gaming mouse today isn't all that bad. There was a time when we were all perfectly content gaming with crappy ball mice.

    Your style of play?

I have a Avago A3050 mouse and a A3095 one (G400), both have 60 IPS perfect control speed on paper. I'm usually a mid-high sense player so it's still manageable with those two, but when I try low sense I run out of range very often, especially when playing Quake-like stuff.
