i thought it'd be nice to start a thread about underappreciated games or about games many people don't even know they exist, but they're great and worth trying/playing, this also includes games that try something different(concept/gameplay mechanics). so anyone who've played a game and was surprised by how good it was, let us know...
i'll start with Neighbours from Hell, it's a unique mix of puzzle-solving and strategy, you play as a guy who must play pranks on his neighbour in order to earn high viewer ratings throughout a number of episodes over three season. the gameplay mechanics are rather simplistic, but i found the game to be great fun and great change from you're typical FPS, RTS, strategy and role-playing games...really worth a try...

Savage 2 is probably one of the best games out there. Superior graphic and a gameplay mixed of FPS, third person and RTS
Huge online battles monsters vs humans vs demons -
The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay is propably the most underappreciated game ever made, personally i played it 4 times or so, and thinking about playing it again maybe next weekend....this game sizzles with quality, the graphics, sound effects, voice acting, atmosphere, level design, variety....just about everything, it really made feel imprisioned in a high-tech prison....it really is as good as HL2..
-
Chronicles of Riddick was superb and very under rated.
Arrgh you beat me to it! -
Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory doesn't have the best graphics or the best sound but it sure has some of the best gameplay. I've been playing it for almost 4 years now, and I still think it's one of the best out there despite playing games like Crysis, Halo 2, etc.
-
too bad i never tried Wolfenstein:enemy territory, i've heared from many people it's great game, now i'm trying to make up for that by playing Quake wars..

The best game I've ever played is a mod for BF2 called Project Reality. It does have new units and weapons, but that's not what the mod is about. The main focus is improving realism and gameplay by encouraging teamwork via the introducing of many things that were never thought possible on the BF2 engine. It seems to have attracted a more mature community, which is quite refreshing. Check out the site for more info.

I personally would say Beyond Good and Evil. Didn't even know the game existed till I borrowed it from a friend.
EDIT: Although it wasn't really "underrated" considering most of the press loved it. -
Advent Rising. I loved that game.
-
Battlezone 2. Much older game, but it was awesome to have an FPS coupled with RTS elements. Wish there were a remake of this, either as Battlezone 3 or anything else.
-
The Witcher is a pretty sweet game that I have been playing lately, my favorite RPG since the original Diablo.

Mount and Blade...A medieval battle/strategy simulator in third person...graphics are anything special(and very scalable on old pc) but damn this game is a drug!!!!the main word is realism so no health potion and you can killed by one spearman even you have won the battle...
And arrows follows phisic rules so kill the enemies when you're riding horse is very difficult and satisfying...
The combat system of Mount & Blade wipe away Oblivon,Two World Morrowind and any other medieval third person...
But it's not for all...the game it's hard and you can die easily(just an arrow that you don't see and you're dead)...but when after playing you will be able to defeat ten soldiers alone the feeling will be like Bravehearth or Gladiator movie...

Return to Castle Wolfenstein -
Hostile Intent, mod for Half-Life that is completely centered around team based combat and strategy, I was addicted to it for a long time but then the community died once it's sequal (Phoenix Rising, mod for HL2) was announced but now no one plays it. It looks pretty good on the HL engine and requires quick reflexes and good team work, since its based on realism 2 or 3 shots will kill you (1 for shotty or sniper usually, you don't have a health bar). You can't run and gun either, you can run pretty fast with the gun at your hip, but in order to fire you need to raise your sites, which slows you down considerably, and sound is very important so you want to move slow anyways. I would tell you to try it but every server is dead now, I'm waiting so anxiously for Phoenix Rising!

Gunz, I played when the beta first came out, and it was some of the best fun i have ever had playing a video game, then they kept adding stuff and people starting hacking, wasn't as fun....

Black and White, and Black and White 2.
I reeeeealy love the idea of being the GOD who controls everythingSuper games

yeah, Indigo prophecy or Fehrenheit(as it's called here in Europe) is one of the most unique experiences i've ever had, this game really revolutionized the adventre genre and i think it's a must have for everyone who wants to try something new/different. the investigation and context-sensitive action sequences are very thrilling and exciting, the game is filled with atmosphere and some horror survival elements as well. the only think i didn't like about this game are the lackluster stealth sequences, they are frustrating, confusing and simply not fun. the story starts out very well, but falls short towards the end with many leaps of logic. overall, an excellent game that deserves to everyone's attention..

AceOfSpades, you beat me to the punch. Return to Castle Wolfenstein is THE BEST FPS ever made, hands down. COD2 (bolt action rifle only) was fun, and COD4 is great too, but the original RTCW will remain legendary for sure. It's too bad that it slowly died -

Age of Mythology / Age of Mythology: The Titans
Greatest RTS i have ever played but the devs stopped updating the game a whiel ago and it became very imbalanced. When it was still supported, it was the greatest rts i had ever played. -
Dreidel is defenitely right, Age of Mythology is easily one of the best RTS games i've ever played(along with Age of Empires 2 & Company of Heroes), here are some other great titles worth a look/try:
1-Rise of Nations: combines the best elements of Civ and Age of Empires series, really great game..
2-The Longest Journey: propably the best adventure game ever made..
3-Penumbra Overture: mysterious, atmospheric and very scary, if you're into survival-horror genre, get this..
4-Act of War: propably the most underrated RTS game ever, this game has everything, great graphics, physics, sound, gameplay and interesting settings and facions....a bit of a system hog but deserves a look.
5-Call of Cthulhu: the scariest game i've ever played...period. -
Longest Journey, it's sequel Dreamfall, Beyond Good and Evil, Indigo Prophecy, Psychonauts and Perimeter are frequently praised by game reviewers but don't perform well on the retail end.
-
the longest journey was pretty good. haven't tried dreamfall though.
-
These games weren't really "underrated". From what I remember they both received immense acclaim and praise from critics but never really took hold in the main stream market as they were a bit complex for most casual gamers. -
Freedom Fighters
Rez
Beyond Good And Evil
Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines
System Shock 2
Jet Force Gemini
Castlevania SOTN -
The Witcher
-
patrician 3 - trading strategy game, that might me a mit boring to the blood thirsty. although you can attack pirates or turn pirate.
i only know one other person that plays it.
i also love the hearts of iron series. -
MICHAELSD01 Apple/Alienware Master
Psychonauts for sure. I've played through that game a few times and it was still fun and unique every time.
-
Dangerous Waters
Harpoon (ANW +/or CE)
Operational Art of War (3)
Combat Mission (1-3 NOT 4/Shock Force)
Air Assault Task Force
Also, several games previously mentioned by others (HoI, etc) -
Jurassic Park: operation genesis, watching a T-rex and Spinosaurus fighting it out to death never gets old...
-
I also think that Wolfenstein ET is a great game, and a game I still find awesome. The multiplayer is addicting especially the fact that you can be both a teamplaying type or a lone-wolf type, and still find the game to be awesome. On top of that, its free, which makes it 10 times better
-
well it appears people are just putting good games on here, so i'll reccommend freedom fighters. that game was pretty fun. i also think LOZ majoras mask was better than ocarina of time, therefore, i guess to me that goes as underrated because majora's mask was always said to not have held up strong against its predecessor. fable was also a fun game and i think the idea molded action rpg games into a new direction.

I played a game years ago called The Mummy, based on the movie. It's a third-person shooter (of sorts), with lots of puzzles in the game and obstacles to get around. It takes some thinking and has excellent replayability.
It's a very old game because I played it on a PIII and 16MB ATI card just fine.If I hadn't lost my CD I would be playing it right now.
