I am looking to buy a game and i think its going to end up being bf2 (even tho im worried it wont work again) - but what i really want to know is, what is the best tactical (no halo 2) fps shoot game out there right now that has a good online fanbase?
thanks

ScifiMike12 Drinking the good stuff
I would have to say Counter-Strike:Source. The reason being is that you can do so much in this simple game. The graphics are amazing (depending on your computer specs and what resolution you're playing at).
Also, the one reason I cannot stand BF2 or 2142 is the bugs. I mean, they're great games but sometimes during gameplay it will just go straight to the desktop screen without any error or notice.

Counter-Strike 1.6 or Counter Strike: Source (CS/CS:S)
-
CS:S. I also play BF 2, but it's just not as smooth as CS is, although the bugs themselves have not really affected me much.

I liked BF1942 and I like BF2 quite a bit...but I never got used to BF2142. I dunno, I just don't like all this futuristic stuff that never actually exists I guess...And of course, CS: Source is awesome, especially the mods on there (zombie mod is a good one)

Unreal Tournament 2004 is pretty good too, though its kinda outdated.

BF2/2142 and the CS series.

Counterstrike 1.6 is very tactical and isn't just some simple point and shoot game. Sound plays a major role as 3D sound allows one to pinpoint the location of their enemy from footsteps. If you ever decide to join a team, the universal matchplay is by 5v5 scrimmages (scrim for short). These 5v5 scrims can get pretty intense as each team has different strategies (strats). This is only a little of what you would experience. The graphics of CS 1.6 isn't very up to par with today's FPS's but the skill involved in the game is what makes it fun. I recommend you try the game.

Yeah i love cs 1.6

the counter-strike series is the world's most popular fps (easily more than halo 2)

is there a strong amount of people that play CS still on their servers? also, am i looking to get "counter strike source" -- what does the source refer to...
-
cod2 gets a lot of players according to xfire stats

Source refers to the new engine that the developer put it on

counter strike runs on the half life engine. its from way back. its a classic, though, and a lot of people still play it.
counter strike source runs on the source engine. its basically a remastered version of counter strike. the engine is more advanced, its the same engine that half life 2 runs on, and by contrast to the half life engine, it is only a few years old. a lot of people play counter strike source, too.
if you have a decent system, counter strike source is easy to recommend because it is newer, prettier, better coded, and has a larger install base compared to the original counter strike. (although both versions have a lot of people playing. counter strike still has a ton of dedicated players, ESPECIALLY when you consider how old it is)
i should note that the game play itself is very similar between the two versions. -
wow, didnt realize all these people still play these games - thanks for the link
