What game do you feel is the best RPG/MMORPG and why...?
-
diablo 2 because you can't stop playing it... though I'm not sure if thats a good thing though...
-
i feel wonderland online imo: a unique battle system, a much friendlier community(so far), a unique ui and a challenge to get used to, which puts alot of people on the same page, plus its free!
-
I am not an expert in RPGs, although I do have a decent experience with them. I think that officially Diablo 2 is the best RPG, but two others that I would put up there is Oblivion and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Another fun one was X-Men Legends because it was an RPG but with a fresh feel to it. But another thing to note is that different people like different styles of RPGs, so there are a variety of aspects.
-
Mass Effect Man, its different than the traditional RPG and it actually gets one thing right that all the other RPGs are missing, great voice acting and dialogue. Its also really great to play just for the story and action.
Other than that I think Baulder's Gate Shadow of Amn is probably the great RPG just on its immense epic scale. I dont remember another game with so much story, content, and feel of a history immersed world. -
i think fable is one of the better RPG's in that it was pretty humorous and had some interesting / awesome elements to it. dark cloud 1 and 2 are very awesome RPG's in my opinion; dark cloud 2 is a very innovative and immersive game with tons of exploration and customization. star ocean was an interesting game, though i don't recall finishing it. -
Yeah I played Dark Cloud 1 for the PlayStation 2. Awesome game I got about 60% of way through it till I couldn't beat the Witch ***** in the Pirate Area.
-
second Fable and also the NWN series and the KotOR series.
-
I'm going to go with... Betrayal At Krondor. But only because I'm a huge Feist fan.
NWN and KotoR were great, yes. The Elder Scrolls series has traditionally been strong. Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 were also extremely well-received.
Oh, and Planescape: Torment. Definitely have a run through that one. -
Favorite Traditional RPG: Baldur's Gate Trilogy - Epic feel, amazing story, great NPC's
I really liked Mass Effect but I felt that there were some parts missing to make it as epic as the BG series. If ME2 can make the jump then it'll definitely be on my all time favorite list as well.
I heard that Jade Empire and KOTOR were really good too (go Bioware) but have yet to try them out. Jade Empire from Steam is likely to be my next purchase.
Favorite JRPG: Shin Megami Tensei Series - Really hard! Character Depth and dark story lines. My absolute favorite JRPG series, but be prepared to make a major time commitment... Persona 3 took me over 120 hours.
-Digital Devil Saga I and II
-Persona 3 (Persona 4 is just announced w00t! Persona 1 and 2 are very rare)
-Nocturne
I also enjoyed the Shadow Hearts series. -
For traditional RPGs I felt Chrono Trigger was hands down the best RPG of its time. For MMORPGs I am biased because I have tons of time logged for Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning beta. I am a fan of mmorpgs that have pvp with pve added in, not the other way around.
-
Final Fantasy 1. First RPG I bought out of Funco ( This was before any Game Craze or anything ). Logged in a TON Of hours on this one, saving up for a Catclaw.
Dragon Warrior. I mean, come on now, you had to have this one.
Pools of Radiance. I loved this game. One of the first RPG's I had for my computer.
Baldur's Gate. I know I liked it, but for whatever reason I can't remember much of it now.
Everquest. That one changed gaming for me alltogether. Now I wish I could find something to give me that feeling again. I can still hear the intro music. -
edit: there's a Everquest tribute video on youtube that'll bring back lots of memory from original EQ minus all the crappy expansions. -
Tallon Zek. I wasted probably 4 years of my life on that damn game. Now if I had put as much effort into my marriage as I did trying to form a cross team alliance I wouldnt be divorced with a nice hefty credit card debt.
-
Let's see if Diablo 3 takes the trophy when it comes out...
-
Something about the Diablo series that reminds me more of Gauntlet with kill 300 enemies on the screen, rather than the D&D type game that I long for.
-
Chrono Trigger.. get a emulator and play that.. or get it on the ds.. although the graphic is outdated, it's still the most impressing by it's gameplay and story.. FF7 came in second but not even close.. Grim Fadango 3rd. And the big Diablo is not in my list at all.
-
hands down, best MMORPG til this day: ultima online.
i haven't played a game since ultima online that can compare to its pvp-system. pvp wasn't level or skill dependent, but depended on the users' abilities.
i'm waitin for diablo 3 and mortal online to come out so i can make my return into the MMO world =) -
Diablo 2 for hack and slash
Morrowind and oblivion for immersive gameplay and really good replayability along with really long gameplay.
KOTOR I and II
Chrono cross/trigger
final fantasy series (I liked 7 and 8) -
Chrono Trigger is the best I've played so far.
-
besides final fantasy and shenmue i really liked everyquest, LineageII, and AoC

Mass Effect and Fable provided me with plenty of hours of solid "oh-snap!" enjoyment. Both titles are highly recommended.
-
i've played a lot of RPGs, MMO and traditional,
but the best one for me is still CHRONO TRIGGER
the flow of gameplay and the depth of the storyline is just so frickin' awesome, i totally loved it. the music is pretty spectacular too.
mind you, it's a 32-bit, no voice-over, SNES game. the balance of great action and an excellent script made it a beautiful game, which, unfortunately, is lacking in most of today's RPGs. i'm not saying that all modern RPGs are bad, it's just that, none of them has surpassed (or equaled) the quality of storytelling featured in CHRONO TRIGGER. -
-
First and foremost Diablo is NOT an RPG! Or at least a 'pure' RPG. It is a single character RTS/action/adventure hybrid dungeon crawl game.
Best RPG?
Easy.
Baldur's Gate series.
Planescape: Torment comes in second. -
Arcanum was pretty epic, first RPG I found to seriously take on Magic versus Technology.
Fable, Everquest, Never Winter Nights, Knights of the Old Republic, Jade Empire, Mass Effect (if the load times were shorter on 360, I'd enjoy it much more).
I'm probably forgetting some... -
^^^post above^^^
Yup. That wins.
-
Old school PC: Baldurs Gate and Diablo
New PC: Neverwinter nights 2-just started the campaign and I know even after I beat it there will be lots more to do
Consoles: Shenmue, Skies of Arcadia -
Someone mentioned it b4 which reminded me to say that Jade Empire is a pretty damn good action rpg game.
You'll feel pretty baller whenever you learn a tight new martial arts move, main because you feel like bruce lee with lightning attached ready to whip anyone's ass. Anyone ever pull off the untouchable frozen thousand fist technique in that game? Sooo sweet. -
lol if we're going back to games like BG + PS:T why hasn't anyone mentioned Fallout series?
it had such a sweet atmosphere.
-
Hello Kitty Island Adventure.
Seriously, I had Lvl60 Glass Armor. -
honorable mention include arcanum, divine divinity, ToEE
