What do you think is the best RTS game out there? personally, i like act of war: direct action the best. it offers modern warfare plus great graphics and sounds.
-
-
I'm not into RTS, however, this could have probably gone in the gaming section, =s
-
i love rts, although they have taken a backseat since i got bf2. i played ra2 yuris revenge for yrs now, also love rome total war and bfme2 cos u can use all my fav lotr characters, is good fun to play.
-
If I ever got a RTS It'd probably be Warcraft III. I might actually get that later this year, after I buy a laptop so, it'll be a while...
-
WC3 is awesome, it never gets old with all the custom maps!
I also really enjoyed Age of Empires 2, I found the 3rd one pretty 'bleh' -
Starcraft.. No superpower computer required. There is always someone on to play with in battle.net, It is still even updated, for those korean folks
. Starcraft is also cheap(around $20 online for the battle chest, which includes broodwar). That is just my 2 cents.. I love starcraft
-
Best RTS game ever=
Warcraft 2
back in the days when battlenet /online internet gaming was not avaliable. I was playing this thru internet using a client call KALI that converts local LAN ipx into tcpip/ and allow internet play. KALI was such a great program. DOOM descent warcraft2 were all INTERNET playable. -
Warcraft 3, Rise of Nations, Rome Total War, and I remember absolutely LOVING the early Command and Conquer (original or Red Alert, not sure)
-
Starcraft, Warcraft 2, Dawn of War, Stronghold, all the ones i keep going back too time after time.
-
For modern RTS, I love dawn of war. I've also recently started playing rise of legends, which is seeming pretty nice so far. You also can't go wrong with WC3 or C&C Generals.
For older games, Starcraft FTW. Starcraft is the best RTS I've ever played. -
-
Rise of Nations, Age of Empires II, Age of Empires III, Warcraft III, and Star Craft--are all pretty good RTS games. Although I have not played Rise of Legends, the game looks pretty good.
-
If u want modern or future RTS, go for Dawn of War or Rise of Legend
If u want history RTS , try Cossack 2 , WC3 (not history but they u sword alot)
For old RTS, WC2, Starcraft,C&C is pretty good and total anihilation is the best of the best
For the future, i think it going to be C&C3 and Supreme Commander
I havent play BFME2 so i dont know. -
Red Alert 2, Starcraft, Empire Earth.
-
STARCRAFT!!!! STARCRAFT STARCRAFT STARCRAFT!!!!!
Now that I've got that out of my system (StarCraft!) some of my favorites, other than the obvious, are Warhammer 40,000 Dawn of War and its expansion, WarCraft series, and Homeworld series. -
Playing age of empires 3 right now along with Rome total war gold ed. and dawn of war oh and rise of nations and legends are great also
-
Dune 2, Warcraft 2, Command & Conquer (the first one), Starcraft, Warcraft 3 - loved them all. Still do. Gotta go buy myself that "first decade" set of C&C games...
-
Wow, I nearly forgot about Dune 2. That one was a great game too.
-
StarCraft (plus Expansion, Command and Conquer Generals (plus expansion), (o.o... cake mix.. Sorry... side tracked for a second..), BFME and BFME2
-
Homeworld, Homeworld: Cataclysm, Homeworld 2
all amazing games =)
and what does BFME stand for? sorry if its a stupid question, I've been an FPS junkie for too long. -
it is that new game base on lord of the rigns. Battle For Middle Earth
.
Dune 2 was great but lack of multiplayer makes it not a RTS to me. War2 was soooo good.. Back when KALI was THE gaming place to be, I was in the very first War2 internet League. (knows as Internet Warcraft League) had a lot of fun. Lots of crazy strategies....... nothing like mass build sappers + some diversion units and attack one side while send sappers in kaBoom Kaboom lol. bye bye castle+key units. GG
No where to run No where to hide best map ever !!
I do enjoy starcraft and warcraft3 (DOTA anyone ??) but Warcraft2 is just an amazing game during its time in EVERY ASPECT.
-
You cant get the original dune 2 anymore. You can get the remake Dune 2000 which supports multiplayer over westwood online.
And it doesnt need multiplayer to be a true RTS. Even without multiplayer, its a strategy presented in real time, right? -
all I did was mass build units in Dune then send in 1 shot and mission done. To me, it has zero AI .. Dune however created this whole genre and I give them mad kudos for it. But in terms of strategy... They did not even give a decent build order for AI. Mass build and send in and its done!
But when playing vs a human ( say the command and conquer by westwood and all the rts games mentioned in thread) Then real time strategy comes in... You do not know if the guy will try a fast early rush , tower your ass (warcraft 3) or tech up fast. The strategy also varies depends on map vs Human players. -
Starcraft no doubt. Warcraft 3 and the DOTA custom map are what I play most to this day. I usually play 1-2 hours of Dota a day.
-
warcraft 3 by far!!, I make money on there all the time rushing / selling accounts and I got a key for free from friend with disc
and if u get tired of wc3 u can play the custom games, Dota owns and Footmen Frenzy and TD's are all so fun!!
-
And all of that stuff is quite illegal according to blizzards EULA.

Command and Conquer Red Alert 2 best RTS game of all time!
-
wc3:tft - i think its safe to say that dota is the best and most addicting custom map ever. haha =)
-
starcraft is probably one of the best RTS ever made... seeing as it still survived till now... how long has it been? 10 years?
-
Warcraft III: Frozen Throne all the way
-
Command and Conquer Red Alert
Command and Conquer Generals
Krush Kill Destroy 2
Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War
Best in my opinion -
Yeah Supreme Commander looks really good. I'm gonna buy a 19" widescreen when that comes out. I hope my X1600 with 2 gigs of ram can handle that game.
What do you guys think?
-
It should handle it well.
Starcraft every day and twice on Sunday!
C. -
This is an easy question. G-E-N-E-R-A-L-S spells Generals! Generals all the way!
For upcoming games, it has to be C&C 3.
But right now, BF2 has crused all of my likes for strategy games. What a ruiner BF2, well done! -
Dawn of War is by far the best RTS yet. Sure, a lot of the old classics are, well, classic. C&C was great, and Starcraft was amazing for its time...
But Dawn of War just has so much more depth, and requires so much more tactical thinking, it's really the only choice.
If you count the Total War games, they might be good candidates too though.
Edit: Actually, that's not true. DoW has the best multiplayer component (especially larger team battles are amazing), and one of the best intro movies ever, but the singleplayer campaign is mediocre at best.
The best singleplayer RTS would have to be.... Warcraft 3, possibly... Or the original C&C. -
Power to the Classics, STARCRAFT!!! The best of the best right there, ohhh fine! If you want graphics and fun gameplay go with Battle for Middle Earth 2. There both great but starcraft is by far the best RTS on this earth.
-
Supreme Commander!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Can't believe noone has mentioned Company of Heroes yet. Made by Relic, uses the same system as DoW. But with an improved cover system (and of course improved graphics) I think it is one of the few true strategy games out there. It's no longer paper scissors rock.
-
Anyone tried Warhammer Mark of Chaos yet? I know I'm getting it for Christmas, so if you have any opinions I wouldnt mind hearing -
moon angel Notebook Virtuoso NBR Reviewer
Red Alert, Generals and the first two Age of Empires were good fun.
-
Mark of Chaos seems to have received mixed reviews to date. I don't own it yet so can't comment first hand, but I was in Games Workshop yesterday discussing RTS titles, and the guy in there said Mark of Chaos has stupendous graphics, and if anything looks even better than Medieveal Total War 2, which is in itself a visual feast. That said, I gather Mark of Chaos is not the easiest of games to get into, requiring much patience and understanding (not necessarily a bad thing though), and many users have reported it as having loads of bugs. My boys love RTS games, and we've just bought a new PC with a 8800GTX card so they'll love playing all their games again.
Top RTS titles? Well, from what I've seen I'd say these:
- World of Warcraft: Reign of Chaos & Frozen Throne
- Company of Heroes
- Warhammer 40,000: DOW / Winter Assault / Dark Crusade
- Command & Conquer: Generals / Zero Hour
- Rise of Legends
- Act of War
- Medieval II: Total War

Starcraft, Red Alert, Warcraft 3

However, it really does feel like a watered down R:TW. Battles usually go for about 10 minutes only, the campaign is linear and way too short/easy. And the tactical nature of it all is somewhat sullied by the fact that retreating infantry is not a viable tactic. An infantry unit is going to get massacred if you tell them to fall back. -

I like warhammer dawn of war dark crusade
and other than the mismatches on command and conquer zero hour i loved that game but now it wont even install or run on my pc it dies and corrupts some windows boot up file on my pc

StarCraft/BroodWars, WarCraft/Frozen Throne !
SC/BW is no doubt the SC ever made, so balanced and fun. WC3/FT is also really fun, although not as balanced as SC/BW its a nice take in an old genre. Plus both these games have amazing custom maps! -
There is some element of it in all (good) RTS'es, and it's a vital component in any strategy game. It basically just means that units have strengths and weaknesses that complement each others. CoH relies heavily on that, so it's certainly rock scissors paper. Try making a strategy game where a powerful unit is powerful under *all* circumstances, and weaker units are *always* weaker, no matter what they're fighting. Without rock scissors paper in some form, there *is* no strategy. Just a race to reach the most powerful units first.
So yes, CoH certainly uses the rock/paper/scissors mechanic. It's not the simple model that Starcraft used (ranged units > flying units > close range units > ranged units > .... and so on), but it's still fundamentally the same idea.
Some weapons are powerful against tanks but next to useless against infantry. Every unit, weapon and vehicle has very specific roles in which they excel, and other roles where they're little more than targeting practice.
Anyway, I think Company of Heroes is a great game. The singleplayer campaign is great (and a huge improvement over DoW), but the multiplayer just isn't as... dynamic, I guess, as Dawn of War.
If you start lagging behind in a CoH game, you have a much harder time catching up and winning. In DoW, the balance of power can shift much faster. No matter how desperate you are, you almost always have a chance to turn the tables on your opponent.
At least that's been my experience. Because of that, I prefer DoW for multiplayer. But overall? I don't know really. CoH is a brilliant game, but so is DoW. Do I really have to choose? -

I just ordered Medieval II: Total War.
My second RTS game, from what i've seen it looks good.
