I just got Company of Heroes and love it.
I am a big C&C Generals fan, but I have always been wanting a WWII RTS.
-
-
.
But...soon to be best rts = C&C3 -
C&C is all washed up...they've released way too many bad games for the sole intent of leveraging the franchise to squeeze more money out of it. -
startcraft is the best, then Warcraft III
i've playing starcraft for 4 years or 5, and warcraft for 3 years, ocasionally
they're not addicted to starcraft for no reason
Other RTS games, of course they have way better graphics and stuff, but they're just about those stuff, strategy is not emphasized
if you've ever watch the korean starcraft proleague, you wouldn't think it's hilarious, it's FANTASTIC -
Problem is, way too many cheaters. And you won't find out until you've invested at least 10 minutes in the game, at which point you and your two and a half marines find yourself facing 100 battlecruisers. With shields.
This is why I switched to FPS, if someone cheats you know immediately, and can move on. No time wasted -
dude, you truly know nothing about starcraft
yes, there're cheaters, but what they can do is very limited, actually they can make a game crash when they're gonna lose, but it has been fixed, so there's virtually no way to cheat now, and NOT in proleague -
Well, I admit I never got to look at the SC source code. I didn't get the right decompiler or de-obfuscator or whatever the 1337 hax0rs use to crack the game.
But trust me when I say that when I had a laptop that couldn't play FPS or any graphics intensive game, I dedicated quite a bit of time pwning people---maybe you even---in SC. I knew all about the build order strats, rushes, 1on1, 2on2, 1v7c unlimited, etc. etc. and I pwned just about every legit player I met and every comp game I played in to "level" my status up. I was as you would say in Korean, "gosu! gosu!". I got to a point where I could mass mutas and pwn a decent 'toss player with good PStorm skills by out microing him. Or I could mass goons and pwn a zerg rusher, provided he didn't suicide rush in the first 3 minutes before the patches made a game unranked to do so. I played I also played micro games. I played UMS games. I played sunken defense.
So yeah, I guess I know nothing about how SC works codewise, and I guess I'm a bit lazy for not finding that out. But I'm pretty sure I know something about it, and that is every time I looked at the ladders I see impossible stats posted by people who hacked the game, and Blizzard not giving a crap about it because SC doesn't generate monthly subscription revenue like WoW. Maphacks, game freeze (freeze your game but ALT+F4 closes), comp freeze (crashes all OS's up to Win2000), lag cheats, server cheats, etc. etc. etc. yeah I've seen it all. I'd say when I quit SC, I forgot the patch version, about one out of every two or three games had someone with a cheat in it. Of course, I'm only judging by the competition I played against, and such a limited sampling could be inaccurate and in fact irrelevant when talking about the Korean Pro-league servers. But hey, I do know stuff about SC and the cheaters can actually do some pretty messed up **** to your computer using Blizzard's source code.
Maybe I need to check on it again, find my SC cd somewhere, just to make sure. But I've since moved on to a non-crappy GPU as you might say, so the incentive isn't really there. -
-
Also, I think I may have come off as a bit pompous on the post above. I guess I kinda meant to too. But I kind of understand what crappyGPU feels, and there was a time where I swore up and down SC was the best RTS of all time (next to WC2) and anybody who said otherwise just didn't know the game well enough. But looking back on the game---which is probably more than a decade old now---I can say that it definitely had its flaws despite its many amazing features. The most prominent of which is the emphasis on pure numbers rather than quality of units. Some people actually enjoy this and miss it in WC3, but I think RTS games are better served by taking WC3's approach. And of course, as Sylvain mentioned, the emphasis on crushing defenseless worker units is kind of sad, cheap, and strangely satisfying if you're doing the crushing. -
We should have games some time gator -_- 1v1? -_-a FT or SC
-
Haha it's been years since I've played, I'm not sure where the CD is. If you've played recently, you'll kick my ass easily. I can probably get a working cracked version of SC for b.net, but uh...that's illegal
-
Yet another former StarCraft Pwner right here
Its fun getting that far into it, but I'm much more into DoW now. Much better concepts in my opinion.
-
Oh the good old days. lol I remember I used to Carrier rush in about 10 mins. No cheating, I just went up the tech tree and didn't upgrade the shields. more Carriers would compensate for the no shields. But that was ages ago.
-
StarCraft didn't add much new depth to the tactics of the game. More varied units, yes, good balancing and three races instead of two. But the basic gameplay was exactly the same.
Dawn of War was the first to really break free of those limitations and add a new dimension to the strategy. It moved focus from plain numbers and quality of the troops towards positioning and movement as much as combat (You might have the biggeest nastiest army, but if you aren't ready to attack and defend at the right places at the right time, you'll still lose. And you have to be *very* careful about positioning, to take advantage of cover and ensure that only the right units enter melee, depending both on your unit types, and what you're fighting against. But probably most importantly, you may slaughter your opponent in one place, but if you don't also prevent him from capturing territory or sneaking around to take out half your base at the same time, it won't do you any good.) -
my mother's side of the family are all korean and my korean cousin is spending a semester over here and has played starcraft competitively on television back in korea.
ridiculous. i've never seen anybody hit so many keys and move the mouse so quick and often that it makes me dizzy. it's aboslutely crazy how good my cousin is at the game.
but anyway,
i'm a big fan of FPS myself, but im picking up company of heroes this week just b/c it won ign's game of the year and im trying that dawn of war game since i've heard all good things.
but yeah, starcraft is a great game as well as the original CandC games. beyond them, i haven't play many RTS games. -
Starcraft.
All you former SC players, which servers did you play on and where you in any clans?
I used to play on US West (original) and I ran SwZ until it diedI was SwZ[Darkstar]
-
anyone tried space rangers 2, think its one the best games the genre has to offer.
-
Warcraft(s), Civ III and IV, Homeworld, ect..............Im more into racing games though........Im a big NFS fan.
-
1. Total Annihilation
2. Dark Reign
3. Command & Conquer Generals
4. Company OF Heroes -
Total Annihilation
Im about to make a thread about Total A here in a few. -
Yeah, I need to play TA. My brother used to play it religiously and the music is so fantastic, never to be matched or outdone in my opinion. I found a copy of the whole set (minus kingdoms) online and snatched it up but I've been so obsessed with Dawn of War I haven't gotten around to playing.
A game like TA could seriously do with an updated version. Better AI, better graphics but keep the gameplay. It would probably be screwed up by whoever took the gig but I can hope... -
-
Command & Conquer: Generals
I still play it now, hope there's a "sequel" in Command & Conquer 3. -
As for best RTS, it WILL be whatever Relic bring out next lol. -
Also, what do people think of Red Alert VS Red Alert 2? I thought Red Alert was literally a timeless classic, even play it to this day both SP and MP, my favourite RTS game ever made. But when Red Alert 2 came out, I thought it was just an average RTS, and pretty forgettable.... -
Plus once you got tired of Red Alert you could add guys who shoot nuclear dogs at the enemy, that was always fun.
-
google Total Annihilation: Spring
Modern day remake of the TA series in an open source kind of way. It's now a fully 3d game with mounds of open source mods and tons of maps.
It also supports over 5000 units on screen at once IIRC.
I have it and can attest to its greatness. Classic game remade... better, stronger, faster, and free. -
You need the original game in order to play that though, for certain files i think...
-
supreme commander basically is total annihilation
-
Well, I've got everything but kingdoms, hopefully that is enough for me to play that. I can't wait to give it a spin.
-
If you don't, then legally, you can't use Springs version of Total Annihilation. Instead, you can use the spring engine to play mods such as star wars or other non total A mods.
But in reality, anyone can DL TA:SPRING right now and get playing right away.
I own the original total A, though i dont have it installed anymore. Im good, 'legally' and I enjoy TA spring on a regular basis. Good online community. -
I know, I wouldn't get used to C&C3 because of the change in storyline. I don't think they're'll be a sequel to Generals in C&C3, but hopefully in the future.
Any other modern-day RTS suggestions? -
C&C3 goes back to the original story line of C&C. GDI vs. Nod, tiberium and alien invasions. In my opinion the best of the series.
I remember playing the original, now widely known as Tiberium Dawn, way back in the day on my old DOS machine
Best RTS Game
