This is a tough one, make your choice, which is the best strategy series for you? (please just consider this series, if i didn't list another series, i'm sorry)
Age of Empires (I, II, III)
Civilization (I, II, III, IV)
Warcraft (I, II, III)
Company Of Heroes (I, II)
Command & Conquer (All of them)
I have played all of these series, but I'll go for Company Of Heroes! Awesome!![]()

-
Mmmhhh... the Diablo games are not a strategy games....
From that I'll go with Warcraft. -
Total War Series (Shogun, Medieval, Rome, Medieval II - and Empire, soon)
I'd love if they did a Shogun II, including other medieval Eastern armies. -
just don't consider that one..
-
Warcraft series
-
Warcraft all the Way
-
I prefer Age of Empires. It taught me pretty much everything about early history, and more in depth, than I ever learned in school.
-
It has to be CIV!!! If only I could function without sleep. ;-)
-
Warcraft is my choice.
-
I love the warcraft series but its a no brainer for me with Civ
-
i don't see starcraft on the poll...
-
Starcraft isn't a series (yet).
Civilization is great, but Civilization 2 is really the only game that is worthwhile IMHO. 3 and 4 were just more of the same with improved graphics.
Age of Empires is great too. Great variety of units including naval, fun animations and sounds, and fairly challenging gameplay - except always suffered from bad AI pathing issues.
Diablo isn't really a strategy game, its and RPG.
Warcraft is ok, but I & II were squashed by the likes of Blizzard's own Starcraft. Warcraft III is probably the best of them all, although it did nothing special for me.
Company of Heroes is great. Plain and simple, but different from its traditional RTS.
C&C has my heart through and through. Best series IMHO. -
The best RTS is starcraft... but the warcraft series are good...
-
Voted Civ as it's the only strategy game on the list.
Calling a tactics or theater/operational level game "strategy" doesn't make it one.....Sorry RTS fans.
(Edit...AOE might be--haven't played 2 or 3, so not sure.....) -
warcraft and command and conquer started it all...
-
starcraft, warcraft
-
AOE and C&C get my votes.
-
The only RTS i've really liked is C&C, just really can't get into them but i enjoyed this one.
-
Omg.
Why Is Starcraft Not On The List. This Is Heresy!!!! -
-
Jeez, I thought there would actually be some competition in that list....No Europe Universalis or Galactic Civilizations?
There are some great games there (and they would win some OTHER game categories IMO), but by far the best strategy game is the Civ series. Hooked since 1991 - no what other PC game apart from the Sim series can anyone say that for..?
One...more...turn... -
where's the total war series!? that would definitely be my favorite!
-
Yeah - I've lost many hours of sleep due to Civilization. My roommate and I played it in college on my old Amiga 500. Too many times I'd wake up at 3am and my roomy was still playing. Next night it was me. hehehe. Glad I at least graduated with a decent GPA. If nothing else I could have claimed a degree in civilization history
-
Warcraft - the best! ))
-
Uh, since when was Company of Heroes a series? More specifically, when was CoH2 released?
Let's look at the facts. You're responsible for the entire military industry in most RTS'es, aren't you? If they were tactical games, they'd go "here are your troops, now use them to the best of your ability".
Instead, they go "here's an engineer. Now build the factories you want, so that you can build the units you think you're going to need later on". That sounds more like strategy than tactics to me.
True, you *also* get to give orders to individual units.... And so what? There's still a lot of strategy in RTS games. -
RTS - Real Time STRATEGY. Fail.
-
If there's no political, diplomatic, logistic, and domestic/civilian aspect, then no.
In the Total War series, the overworld map tries to model this, then the battles take place at a tactical level.
Most RTSs model at the tactical or, at best, theater/operational level as they include a limited logistic aspect---usually only 1-3 resources. They almost never give you the option of defeating an enemy by some means other than battles. The Civilization series models strategy pretty well, although it's biased towards fighting as a solution (admittedly, the Total war series is much worse in this regard.)
For example:
Modeling a single battle/fight in Afghanistan would be tactical
Modeling the war in Afghanistan (and everything in it) would be a single theater.
Modeling the "War on Terror" involving everything from the hot wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the cold ones in North Korea, Iran, etc, as well as the politics and diplomacy among all allies, enemies, neutrals as well as things like public support, elections, logistics, etc,etc would be strategic.
Another example would be the war in Iraq. Almost every tactical battle/fight was a success, making the Iraqi theater an operational success. However the decision to go into that country in the 1st place was a strategic failure. -
Wow. If you want to debate the definition of a word. Go to an english forum. Here, a real time STRATEGY game is part of the STRATEGY genre because you use STRATEGY to pummel your opponents into the ground in real time. Thus they call it a real time STRATEGY game. STRATEGY.

I like Total Wars... but since you didn't have it, I liked Age of Empires (and Age of Mythology too)
-
now that's a tough one beacuse i like the Age of Empires series the most simply because it was the first RTS game i played in my life and i liked it so much, but i have to say that the best RTS game i 've ever played is Company of Heroes, it really revolutionized the genre and even though i don't like WWII-based games i couldn't help but fall in love with this title...
-
I didn't like Civilization IV so much, though. I suppose I liked more of the AoE games a lot than Civilization, but Civ III is so much better than any of the others it more than makes up for Civ IV. The only forum other than NBR I visit consistently these days is CivFanatics, and there mostly the CivIII section. If only I didn't need sleep I could play Civ several hours every night... -

Company of Heroes. Love it and live it.
-
Civ Rlz!!! i like warcraft too...
i just play AoE with friends who dont know to play other gamez xDD
..Im with u guys i didnt like civ 4 much but damn!!!! civ 3 is way too good.. i wish i had no sleeping needs!! (and as a matter of fact i forget about them at least 1 day a week for civ playing xDD) -
Civ of course...nothing like it.
Civ 4 is good, just don't try to play it with Civ 3 logic, its a completely different game.
And by the way the very best strategy will always be Master of Orion 2...those kind of stuff is not made anymore, not even Galciv2 comes close, even if its pretty good. -
Command & Conquer FTW! I really liked the Tiberian series. I still play the original C&C every now and then.
-
Age of Empires for me. I actually just finished a round of AOE III
The first Age of Empires were some of the first RTS games I ever played. -
I dislike c&c 2, others i find it fun, especially ra series.
-
I liked the whole Tiberian Series. The story was good and the acting cheesy. I liked how the managed in Tiberian Sun to depict a world ruined by Tiberium, especially in the expension pack Firestorm.
C&C never had a steep learning curve such as other games. I love Civ 4 too, but it took me awhile to get used to all the commands. C&C is pretty straight forward. -
also like Cossacs series
-
Have to agree with earlier post that Total War series is perhaps the best. However, I voted for Warcraft as it would be my second choice.

C&C Red Alert and Generals have a special place in my heart, as does Total Anihilation.
-
why is CoH on there, a stand alone expansion does not make it a series.
the HoI series although i like 1 the best.
aoe series is awesome as well, that gets my 2nd vote. -
This poll is pretty bad.
It is missing a lot of options, and has Diablo2 in it?!?!
Diablo series are RPG's...
Im not voting.
And will go with Starcraft for the prize. -
Dawn of war is cool and kinda a rip of starcraft
-
I voted for C&C. Played every single game in the series. I did look up some games suggested here that were not in the list. I ended up looking up and ordering GalCiv 2 from amazon. Looks like that is a fun game. Another goog game I"ve played that I haven't seen mentioned here is Homeworld. Haven't played that gaem in forever. Was going to buy Homeworld 2 but from what sites I can get to here at work it looks like it doesn't work with Vista.
-
As for what I chose...it was a close one between Age of Empires and Command and Conquer. I played them both right when they came out and was floored by the gameplay, in very different ways.
Still, nothing compared to the prehistoric/visceral feel of AoE 1. C&C is certainly good, but it is much more focused.
Civilization was fun, but I couldn't get interested in it for a month every year or so.
Also, where is Dawn of War? Where is Heroes of Might and Magic III? That is a strategy game. -
in addition to what Stormeffect said, Starcraft also drew heavy inspiration from the WH40K and aliens universes - if there was any ripping going on, it was the other way around =)
-
the history often told about Blizzard and Warhammer 40k is that the blizzard's staff had many Warhammer fans and they started to develop a wh40k-themed RTS. it's unkonwn if they did on their own first or with Games Workshop previous agreement.
At some point of development GW took off his license and left Blizzard with the game in an advanced development stage. So they changed Space Marines into Terrans, Tyranids into Zergs, and Eldar into Protoss.
I think it is a very logic rumour, because GW had several licensed games with poor sales some time before Starcraft. And if it's true, some heads inside GW must have passed sometime banging into walls looking at the Starcraft sales charts. -
where the heck is warhammer??? oh well, i guess i'll go w/ civilization
Best Strategy Game Series!
