I recently got this game and ive been playing it heaps (even at work) haha
Anyway whats the best keypad you can get for this game? or what do you use?
-
I use a wireless Logitech Action Controller. I originally started using my Xbox 360 controller until I discovered that it was as useful as a chocolate joystick in a hot country.
-
Use anything that's the same style as a ps3/ps2 dual shock controller. The special fight pads aren't bad either.

How about the Mad Catz 360 gamepad (works with pc), this comes packaged with the PC Bundle also.

Since the fightpad was designed for this game its probably a good pick.
If your playing it a lot and you think your going to stick with it, maybe invest in a decent joystick and skip the gamepad completely. -
i suggest that you go with a fight stick.
the best currently being the madcatz TE fightstick.

It's a bit pricey, but it offers the best parts that you can get in a stick.
I actually work with one of the top SF4 players in the USA (sorry cant mention who!) and he suggests this to everyone.
If you are just getting into the game and don't want to spend that much cash, go with the HORI EX2: http://www.amazon.com/Xbox360-Fight...2P6Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1249405763&sr=8-1
As for compatability, make sure the sticks are for XBOX. You can plug em in right into your PC/laptop and it will pick it up just fine without any drivers being needed.
Cheers! -
I bought the MadCatz fightbad and seriously i don't even use it. I don't know about other people but i find that pad WAY too big, i mean seriously the d-pad is ridiculously large, I play better on my keyboard than i do with that. If it had buttons and a d pad a bit smaller (like the nintendo ds pad for example) it wouldve been a bit more comfortable.
Useless junk, i cant even return it -
Fight stick first, but great alternative are ps2 or ps3 controllers.
-
I used the fightpads and an xbox 360 controller at a tournament once. The fightpad was ok. The xbox controller was absolutely terrible.
I've never fought using the TE stick. If you're going to use a controller though, like I said before, ps2/ps3 style is the way to go.
Rank (gamepads, not big boxes with buttons):
1) PS2/PS3 Controller (You can use these with USB or Bluetooth - bluetooth takes some skill to rig up)
2-3) Logitech PS2/PS3 style controller
3-2)Madcatz fightpad
4) An actual stick you pulled off of a tree
87) xbox360 controller -
Keyboard ftw. Silence all you naysayers. That said, if I could spring for a nice stick, I would...

I personally built my own with Happ parts of ebay, in a best case scenario you could build your own for like $40 with authentic indestructible arcade parts.
I still get beat down bad when I play SF4, just way too many really good players online, I almost never run into somebody my skill level and if I do after I win a match or two they quit. -
if you dont mind looking for/installing drivers you can go with the ps3 compatible controllers (i have no experience with fightpads). i just like the non-hassle of xbox compatible controllers ^^
-
Think for 360 controller, 3-person view type of game is best. (like assassin's creed) Anyways, if any of you want to play me my SN is Berserker515. -
Any more info on a DIY fightstick? -
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
Well really you just need a base to hold the parts, and the parts, and a encoder.
The box is a DIY or FYO kinda think (build it yourself or find something suitable, some people use like a coffee table and just built it into the table, in my case using my desk was similar)
The parts I think can be found cheapest on ebay, I got a full 2 person kit (2 Happ competition joysticks and 14 Happ Competition push buttons with cherry microswitches) for like $25
Then is the encoder, I got the Ipac VE a programmable keyboard encoder works great and it was no hassles. I use it for mame, nulldc, zsnes, and more.
it will work with any game that works with a keyboard, I think it was like $20
however this is where you can choose the best for you. I later hacked some dreamcast controllers as a 2nd encoder to play my dreamcast games with the arcade sticks, then later after that I got 2 MC Cthulhu boards, its a multi console encoder that does PS1/PS2/PS3/PC/Xbox/Game Cube/Wii (Wii games with gamecube support, PS1 games are ones played on a PS2 console)
You can buy one of those for I think $40 fully built, or solder together your own for like $25
Considering it functions as like 5 controllers thats really cheap, and it was best for 2 player SF4 since so far Capcom has not patched the game to support 2 players with keyboard yet. However 1 player works just fine and infact when I am playing 1 player I still use the I-PAC and not the Cthulhu boards.
If you really want to do it on the cheap though, just do a "keyboard hack" and hack a old $2 keyboard from a yard sale to be an encoderor you can hack a gamepad. I got 6 dreamcast controllers for $20 on ebay and hacked 2 of them, I am sure you can find some used xbox controllers cheap to hack. It doesnt matter how messed up they are as long as the pcb works.
You may not end up a whole lot cheaper than a fight stick with DIY but it will be better quality and you get the satisfaction of doing it yourself. You can definitly build your own cheaper than the TE fightstick though and even use the same parts it is built with (Sanwa parts) though you wont get probably the neat presentation and little extra features like turbo buttons, but nobody really uses that anyways. -

Hori makes sticks just as good as the TE but you would have to import it and it would cost just as much. So no reason not to get the TE stick if your willing to spend that much since they are available again.
Id personally like to have a TE stick and then mod the encoder inside with a MC cthulhu so it would work on every system.
Maybe I'll stroll across a busted TE stick on ebay one day and can get it cheap, if anybody ever see's one PM me -

Looking to sell it? -
I just use the good old keyboard. I guess I'm better at it.
Don't get me wrong, I can do all the combos and super, ultra moves. I don't know why, but the 4 arrow keys seem to be easier to handle all the fighting moves. Two fingers are always faster than one. -
Question............
I want to buy the PS3 Tournament Edition Madcatz Fighting Stick. Is there some sort of way I can do that with a converter or something?
I never plan to own a 360 and will get a PS3 Slim whenever they come out. Thats why I was wondering if it is possible to use a PS3 TE stick on the lappy? I have bluetoothThanks!

It will work there is some drivers you have to download, it plugs in via usb.
the 360 one seems to be a bit more trouble free for pc use though. -
Keyboard ftw.
I would definitely sell it though i don't know how viable that may be. Seeing as i don't have a paypal or anything, was thinking of doing something on craigslist for a local buyer but i don't really trust that site. Hummm =/ -

I'm going to resurrect this old thread for an update.
One of the best (and cheap) alternatives to the normally available controllers is the USB Sega Saturn controller.
I know it sounds weird, but it works on PC and PS3. The only problem is finding one. There are a lot of cheap imitations available. Don't be fooled.
The key is, the pad is laid out just like the official SF4 fightpads (based on the sega design) but offer a really solid D-pad.
Short Version:
Saturn USB controller
Pros:
Solid D-pad
6-button layout
2 shoulder buttons that click (not like the ps3/xbox triggers)
Corded USB for reduced lag
Works on PC and PS3
Cheap (around $20)
Cons:
No home or select button
Tied down by cord
feels light and cheap
Hard to find -

You can just probably find a universal usb adapter and use a real Saturn controller as well.
I have one in the archives somewhere, I still need to rebuild my arcade control panel I took it down to build the new desk to hold the 3x24" monitors so no SF4 for me till I get my joysticks back.
On that note been tempted to just get a Madcatz TE Fightstick since the price has come down so much, from $130 down to as low as like $70, if your serious about the game or want a more authentic way to play its money well spent.
Frys has it for $99.00 right now - http://www.frys.com/product/5829733
Ebay has some in that price range and stack some bing.com cashback on top of it.
