As the thread title suggests I would like to know what people think is the best driver for the ATI mobility 46xx series (more specifically 4670). I have bounced around a bit and settled on 10.6 at the moment but find it quite bad certainly not the best I have tried. Problem is I didn't document which drivers I used and how they performed so don't know whether I should go up to 10.8 or try say 10.4 or 10.5.

So what is the general consensus for the best, most stable and most OCable drivers for this series of ATI cards.

I haven't had any problems with 10.6, but i need to look into it/test more. I haven't done nearly as much driver stuff now as i did with nvidia cards.

I have no idea what driver I have, I got it from a friend for my 32 bit vista version ( https://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/9206/0/www2.ati.com/drivers/mobile/catalyst_mobility_32-bit_util.exe)
This is the only driver which makes my ati hd 4670 be able to boot in windows at higher clocks than 400mhz (the driver from mxm-upgrade.com and other drivers give me a black screen when i try higher clocks).

As I said i'm not sure which version this is but I think its 10.8.

I can run my ati card at 675mhz 1.2v the way its supposed to be (temps are a bit high for my lappy though) so imo this is the best driver, since its the only one that works for me :p

if you'r into overclocking you could have used the bios boot clock set to stock that way the laptop would boot normaly and then when the driver finishes loading it would get to the desired level this is how i got my 4850 to be on the same lvl as the 4870 on everyday basis even if i can't boot at 4870 clock

Yea I was more into a permanent clock, but the method you described is a possibility too. I asume you used the amd clock tool to temporary clock your 4850?

    nop

i used atiflash and RBE to flash my GPU bios
software overclock tends to be really unstabe on the m17 and thanks to AMD since 10.7 no software overlock can clock both card at the same time

i just took my time to read what each value of the Vbios in RBE was and tweaked them i found that the first one was boot clock then you have several other value that powerplay uses depending on what is going on

Ah I use the same way ^^ The strange thing is that my boot clock was always 675mhz, while only my 02 clock was modified. Then i'd get a black screen after the windows loading bar when I rebooted. The enw driver fixed that though.

I can hardly reach 700mhz/950mhz stable with this driver with temp topping out at about 70C whereas before I could reach over 800mhz/985mhz stable a big difference. I think the driver has a role to play in the way it reacts to a OC as neither temps nor voltage are an issue with my laptop.

Yeah but you run a 5870. The latest drivers still benefit you greatly.

Is there a special version of atiflash that you used? From what I understand, you can't just flash a laptop GPU the same way you can with a desktop one. It'd be great if I didn't have to use the software OC tool, I've always preferred a hardware OC.
