I've recently bought a new gaming laptop and im unsure of what games i should install and which games work best for a laptop. I'm thinking Fallout 3 would be a good game to test my system and a good game for a laptop. Anybody else got any other suggestions?

Battlefield Bad Company 2 would also be a good choice.

ALienware M15x, i5 430m, Ati 5730 1 GB, 4 GB DDR3 RAM, 250GB 7,200 rpm. I regret being such a tight and not getting a better graphics card but i think it will do the job for now at high settings. Battlefield Bad Company is a good possibility. would dragon age be a good way of testing the system?

Dragon age is not that heavy a game, if you want to test its capabilities then crysis, the last remnant or lost planet would do great :D

Any of the above games are great but do you have a genre preference? Do you prefer RPG's like Fallout 3, or would you prefer a FPS like Battlefied Bad Company 2.

Do you plan to play online? (BF2 is a great online game whereas the single player campaign can be short)

Mass Effect 2 is a great RPG that will test your systems albeit not to its limits. Dragon age should run maxxed out on your system without much if any problems (aside from AA setting)

Another good game might be an RTS. you can pickup a copy of the starcraft II Beta (until the full version comes out) with a preorder.

I like FPS but im not sure how they are on laptops because im never played one on a laptop. I am flying to vancouver from glasgow in a few weeks so i dont know if a fps would be that great on a plane with zero room around me. I really like fallout so maybe an rpg would be best suitable. Could i run fallout 3 on full settings on my system?

BFBC2 will probably only run at low-med settings on your machine. MW2 would definitely be easier on the machine and is still a great FPS.

Fallout should run full settings on your system,. You might have to keep anti aliasing low on any game you play but it should work nonetheless.

Even so, on battery GPU performance is usually diminished, and I would expect no more than 45 minutes gaming on battery unless you play a less demanding game like Half-Life 2, or an older RTS or Turn based strategy like original Starcraft, Age of Empires 2, etc. I'm assuming a battery gorilla will get you maybe one extra charge?

Um... not really. Well, if you lower the screen resolution, yes.
What? Dragon Age would push the 5730. Even my GTX 260M is pressed, and it's 2x that GPU.

I am not sure how a powerful Gorilla can help you but good luck. I recommend you check this stickied thread out. Since there are so many great games for the PC, I wouldn't know where to start but lately I have been playing Company Of Heroes and World In Conflict a lot as well as Red faction Guerilla. You should take a look at those.

You should install Steam and just buy games through that.

You have just purchased a new laptop and already you are getting a new GPU? I don't know whether you asked for advice before making that purchase but new GPU's can sometimes cost so much that you would be better of buying an entirely new laptop instead. You are also limited by thermal requirements.

you probably can run fallout 3 high settings. My G50vt with 9800m GS can run it fluently on high settings and its also playable maxed settings but i have 1366x768 as my native res so that might make a difference

I loved Wolfenstien 2009, Bioshock, and Bioshock 2. They aren't very demanding games but they are super fun FPS's and have pretty graphics. Those are the only kind I like to play too.

Crysis might not be the best suggestion. It would completely destroy the OP's 5730. Battlefield Bad Company 2 might also be too strenuous. I would try Modern Warfare 2, instead. The game looks really great and it's relatively light on hardware requirements.

Also, OP, if you plan on playing FPS, don't forget to buy a gaming mouse.

Dragon Age is an awesome rpg. The hardware requirements aren't that much either. But I'd not get it if you don't really enjoy RPGs. Very long storyline and TONS of sidequests and the keeping track of the classes, skills and stats, as well as your party members might not be fun for someone not really into the genre.

You should utilize the grace period, and send it back. Then reorder and spend the necessary +$100 for the Mobility 5850.

Otherwise, it will cost you at least $300.

The 5730 can handle Crysis just fine. I have an X1400 and I can run the game just fine... on low settings at my native res, but it still runs fine.

You do realize that airline laptop power outlets don't put out a lot of power, right? It'll sustain a netbook or portable laptop, but not a gaming laptop. Not by far.

You also have to buy an adapter.

Crysis wouldn't destroy a 5730, particularly not at 1366 x 768. He could probably run it on high, without AA.

    Same with BF:BC2.

You'd probably be better off with medium-ish settings on a 5730.
If you want to put your system to the test, Crysis is a de facto standard for that. There's plenty of games with better gameplay, but most of them won't push your system so hard.

Oh, the poor people sitting around you in the plane who'll have to deal with the rabid clicking and fan noise... ;)

If you haven't already played it, I'd recommend Assassin's Creed 2 w/ offline fix applied. It's a beautifully crafted game and should run respectably with your gpu.

Most PC games you would really want to use a mouse for, and that's an issue in a plane since you won't have the room.

In that case, your best options would be:
    - Keyboard-only games.
    - Games for which you can use a gamepad.
    - Non-real-time games, like Civilization IV.

I've played Sins of a Solar Empire with a trackpad before. The pace makes it possible to play it without a mouse.

Also, The Last Remnant does not require a mouse. Decent game, though if you don't read about the game mechanics (which are never revealed) beforehand it can get really frustrating.

    quoted for truth.

"Most airplane power systems are limited to approximately 75 Watts of power draw per seat. This means that a new 17" laptop, with a power-hungry processor, might not get enough juice to operate. Sometimes the laptop will know not to charge the battery and will just operate via the power, but other times the laptop won't work at all, or will work for a short period of time before tripping the power circuit. You can try taking your battery out all together, or buy a smaller laptop."

If not already mentioned, wait for/get SC2. The start all end all game for me :) I'm way behind in computer-everything, and was stuck on SC1 for 10years, so to upgrade to something in 3D is a HUGE deal for me, and its gotta be a game that doesnt get tiring/end after the campaign's done.

    Good luck

Airline <> Airplane either. The OP stated that "his airline" had power outlets. Most planes don't have power outlets available to passengers, assuming he was talking about a specific plane, or even type of plane, when he said his "airline".

Tons of planes have power outlets.

All airports I've ever been in have electrical outlets open to use so why that would even be a question.... and why anyone would be saying airPORTS have special low power outlets? Obvious it was plane usage man.

Putting extra power outlets on an airplane isnt necessarily tied to a certain model. Think of it as an aftermarket or even a from the factory upgrade. Not all carriers choose to take them.

    Outlets, I don't need no stin'kin outlets!

I'm good for 3.5 hours of Dragon Age or 720P, 8 hours of MP3..snooze.

The UL30VT and BT mouse works just fine on a seat tray and won't melt the crayons on the seat tray next to you if your so unlucky.

I saw a 15" rig get mangled when seat was thrown back and lid caught under seat screen on B767.

I'm getting set to undervolt so might get another hour out of her for the next flight.

Orange Box. The games that make it up maybe old but you may as well experience PC gaming at its near best.
