Well, I'v been interested in trying an MMORPG like WoW but would rather not have to pay until I'm sure I will enjoy it. So can anyone recommend a free one comparable to WoW, with half decent graphics and gameplay. I'v heard good things about GuildWars but that's still not entirely free and will end up costing quite a bit once you get all the expansions for it too. I tried knight online a while back but really wasn't impressed.

PC Gamer just did an article and showed the top nine free ones (out of 60 they tried).
(1) Crime Craft (not released until Q1 2009 by Vogster)
(2) Mythos - www.mythos.com
(3) Requiem: Bloodymare - www.playrequiem.com
(4) Dungeon Runners - www.dungeonrunners.com
(5) Sword of the New World: Granado Espada - www.swordofthenewworld.com
(6) Holic - holic.netgame.com
(7) Shaiya: Light and Darkness - shaiya.aeriagames.com
(8) Fiesta - fiesta.outspark.com
(9) Cabal Online - cabal.ogplanet.com
Haven't tried any myself, but at least PC Gamer plowed through 60 of them and picked the best in their opinion. -
that would be useful. I want to see the results also.

They have a free 10-day trial of WoW if you want to try that to make sure you'll enjoy it.

If you really want to get into a MMORPG, I'd wait for Age of Conan (which is coming out in May). -
Awesome laptops Notebook Evangelist
sorry mate but the key word is free and all those reccomendations include monthly fees and the actual software cost. you could try runescape its free or mju ( spelling?)
-
Cabal, for one, is free. I'm positive.
-
Dude, if they're FREE then just download them and try them out! Only you can decide whether you'll like one or not. -
All those listed in my post above are FREE to play. Some have added costs to get added benefits, but that's up to you.
-
Thanks for the suggestions but which one is best, it's swell giving a list of 10 but I don't plan on spending a week downloading them all lol. Requiem doesn't look too bad but does anyone play it?
-
Second Life is the best. Go download it. Play it. Love it. Hate it. It doesn't matter. It's the best and you need to live with it.
Look, there once was a time I was told WoW is the best. I played it and hated it. Best of anything is purely subjective. If you're going to take the time to read people's opinions until you see a comment you like you may as well take the time to download a game and try it yourself. -
If you guys are interested in an online Football MMORPG, try Goal Line Blitz. Build a character, get him on a team to level up his stats and XP as the season progresses.
-
Guild Wars, it's Free to Play but you do need to buy the software, the software is about 20-30 bucks though (USD) also Mythos (not yet out) is looking great
You could try your luck at a Priv. Server for WoW or other games but my experience w/ Priv. Servers has been bad (a lot of GMs that abuse their powers and lots of bugs)
Oh, there is an MMO 2D game called Maplestory, all is free except Cash Items, which are just for looks no real benefit. Personally Maplestory annoys me, its just a hack and slash -
Downloading sword of the new world, graphics look great, gameplay looks good, the file size is testiment to the level of detail, 3.6 GB download, taking up 6GB when installed :O, it's pretty new and fairly popular already. Just want to try an RPG, I don't play pc games very much, only the odd session on counter strike source or rome total war but I wouldn't mind finding out how far games have advanced since those were released. I might try warhammer online when it comes out but the subscription cost may just make it not worth it for me since I don't play too often.
-
I am actually waiting anxiously for Guild Wars 2.
-
As was pointed out before Shadowbane has gone free. For a free MMORPG its pretty good especially if you're into PVP.
-
just wanna post suggestion; Im like you, trying to find a great mmorpg that are not that too grinding but yet fun to play or somewhat have a good community.
Upon the games that i tried are:
1) Private server MMORPG (better google it)= great way to play famous mmorpg without spending any dime, also they have nifty system where you can level up rather quickly.
2) www.aeriagames.com = featuring some free mmorpg that are great to play with a good community! Really recommend it!! currently playing DOMO which has lotsa quest to do and at level 15 you can fly~~~~!!
3) Risk Your Life 2: Incomplete Union = free and have a style of playing like and action-rpg. even on the official server you can level up rather fast! All the monster there are freaking huge and you can join the War when its available; no level restriction no need to join anything just click on the upper right screen and thus you will be in the War and fight on!! even at a low level can join it!
4) www.onrpg.com = tried some free mmorpg over there and it has some good review..
5) Gunz The Duel: The best mmo action - rpg i've tried!!!and was a good thing since the game lets you level up by actually PK other player, no monster, just players... its like Counter Strike except that you can use either swords or guns to kill your enemy. Chase enemies on huge maps by running along wall or use some nifty sword skils...There's a problem with the server sometime but you'll get over it... I suggest you join a private server Gunz so it will be more stable. www.daemonsring.net <<< private server Gunz...

You do realise Private servers are against a federal law...you are basicaly stealing the game... its not worth playing it because u wont see alot of people online...
If u try World of Warcraft on a private server...youll see 100 people through the whole world..at 120...the server crashes -
Fury also recently went free:
http://www.unleashthefury.com/
Haven't played it, but it used to be a paid game, so it might be worthwhile as a free game. -
-
Is Cabal available to the U.S. now? The last time I checked up on it (prob a year ago), it was only available for Europe.
-
Another good free MMORPG is Rappelz. Great graphics, good class system, usage of pets and you can choose to either solo level through the game or join parties and go to the dungeons. http://rappelz.gpotato.com/ -
I have played Guild Wars for almost two years and love it. The original version is around $30 bucks and you can add the expansion if you like it.
-
Its true though it take the fun outta game, but hey im not an extreme mmorpg gamer, so thats why i want some games to take my mine off a bit from work
sorry if i offended anyone for promoting private servers
Now for the topic: Anyone tried Rappelz?? they say its kinda like WOW but with better graphic and free. really interested in this game.. -
Silkroad Online, I still play it a bit.

I did not read all 3 pages so if it was already posted sorry. But if you want a game like WoW thats free just play WoW on a private server!
I play on WowScape and its pretty good and I hear good things about ToxicWoW. Last I checked it is not illegal to play on a private server, only to run a private server.
So if your interested there you go, you can google the details yourself on how to do it. -
tried Mythos first beta but the game felt a bit too streamlined. it didn't offer the same addictive feel of Diablo series. it's sort of a hybrid of dungeon siege + diablo.
-
-
I just tried Cabal, uninstalled it within 30 minutes. ehh, haha I'll try rappelz
-
Ultima Online on a good free shard. If you like MMORPG for the RPG in the name this is your best bet. Most fun i had while playing an online game ever. And it was back in the times of 56k,man i can still remember those 300$ phone bills
-
Right now playing rappelz, only level 10 though~~~ grinding and grinding... hehehe
-
-
Guild Wars isn't exactly free, but it's definitely better than the $15/month model of WoW, etc. I really like the way the single player campaign works in GW, and how they just charge you for expansions rather than having a monthly fee.
-
Can't say I was at all impressed with Silk Road or Rappelz. They were both so very MEH. Plus servers weren't that great.
Maplestory isn't too bad. It's 2d side scroller type. Kinda interesting. Major grind fest.
Guild wars... was okay. Single player story was like, 6 hours long. And instanced, which sucked. And there really wasn't much to the game besides that and crappy pvp (i know a lot of people who like the pvp in it though).
You could attempt to run your own private WoW server, but it is illegal. And lame... The big ones out there still don't have near the people on the normal server, and really turns it into more of a multi player game... -
I like Anarchy Online and Entropia Universe for free games. Of course paying makes things go easier in both, but you can totally play them both.
Personally, I prefer MMORTS though, different flavor of game, but more satisfying. If you want to check a few out, Shattered Galaxy is free, and Mankind has a trial, though MK seems to be dead for the most part... -
I'm downloading Rappelz right now.
Maplestory is ok, but trust me, lvl 35-50 is the worst grind at low lvls. Plus when I quit, the market was really wack. Beware, though, there are plenty of hackers and scammers. -
-
Try Gunz: the duel at Ijji.com, this is the only game that i keep on going back and play eventhough i tried other mmorpg... killing other players, is such a breeze~~~ and very cool way.
-
Well, I downloaded and installed Sword of the New World, but it doesn't seem to play nice with Vista.
I get hit by a warning from X-TRAP within the first minute or two of it launching, saying something about corrupted system functions. If they can't ensure that their game runs on an OS that has been out for over a year, I don't need thier game.
That was a wasted 4 hours. -
I don't know. I find Maplestory to be too childish and cartoonish for me.
-
I played on free shards as well, but I haven't played in AGES! -
-
Lineage II
-
Ultima Online
Edit: I'm actually on a free shard right now.
On and off for a solid 5 years ftw. -
What about Rakion online? nobody has mentioned it.
I played it a bit like 2 years ago, wasn't bad for what i can remember. -
Dream of Mirror Online is a very nice game IMO, but the graphics may be a bit cartoonish or childish. Game system is in-depth; ability to combine classes, nice amount of customization, PVP, etc. There is even a storyline of quests to do. Flying is a nice addition, though it could be better. Overall a really nice game.
http://domo.aeriagames.com/
I've played quite a few others that you may want to try. 2Moons and 9Dragons have nice graphics, but seem to be pretty heavy on the grinding. Flyff is like DOMO, but seems to be going backwards in gameplay. Last Chaos is a nice game, but it lacks customization. Lunia is a nice arcade style game if you want fast-paced action. So many games out there, it really depends on what you are looking for. -
Right well I tried Sword of the new world, to the guy having trouble with it, I have vista and it runs fine though I did have issues with their patching server giving annoyingly slow download speeds at times. But otherwise I'd recommend people try it, although I havn't played many others to compare gameplay, the graphics on it are pretty awesome, you can play as just 1 character or have a group of up to 3 characters running around in a group - though they manage to keep that pretty tight and it's not as hard as it sounds to play with 3.
