What do you people think is the best video game / PC game of all time? Please give a reason for you're choice like as follows.
Here is my choice: Resident Evil 2 (Playstation 1998). It is rare for a sequel to out do the original but Resident Evil 2 does this hands down. Engrosing story, four games in one and excellent graphics (for the time) for me make Resident Evil 2 the greatest video game ever made![]()

Wow, this is hard one.
I would say that we'd have to do best in each category, since there are so many.
I need to think about this, and then post! -
FarCry.......awesome graphics (even today)...good story..lots of action
HL2.....no words to describe this game...just totally awesome
Brothers In Arms--Road to Hill 30.........awesome stragedy/shooter game -

It was after the thrity second time I found out that the 'S' Rank was omitted from the english release of the game.
Even so the memories just make me smile. That is what sliverlines the game so much for me, the memories... -
Oooo
well Ive really warmed up to oblivion
but Ive got to say half life 2. I think that was about the best game, and last one that was truly an advancement. -
yea..i agree with ya.........i have some very good memories with farcry too...it was my first and best shooter i played..it really got me into the fps stuff....though at that time i played it on a desktop radeon 9550 256MB and couldnt turn settings on highest...but it was still very very fun
-
OK, I think of me, age 12, playing Jedi Knight II Dark Forces. That' was an AWESOME game.
-
It seems every new game i like more and more
the most fun i've had in a while is with rainbow six vegas... it's just awesome to have guys set up at one end of a room while you snake cam the other end and have them smoke the room and enter with your heat vision while you tell them to go silenced. plus the online play is also very very addictive, just put in 4 hours straight tonight. (xbox 360)
Half life 2 is pretty awesome. Great gameplay, story, and graphics.
Farcry is good, but i've had it for about 5 months now and haven't beat it yet because i just don't have that addicting urge i've had with other games.
FEAR was also a great game...
CONTRA!! haha
AHHH so many to pick as my favorite.
if i HAD to pick one, rainbow six vegas...nothing like going down the vegas strip with the sound of your assault rifle echoing while you're shooting holes into cars and taking cover behind them and smashing glass everywhere... ridiculous graphics, awesome gameplay, and addicting multiplayer. (story wasn't the best, but hey, it's a video game not a movie) -
I...must...resist...splitting...into...categories...
I vote C&C: Red Alert. I loved the regular game, loved the skirmish, loved the mods, and wish I had figured out how to play online at the time I was playing it. There have been games which I played longer, better stories, better gameplay, better graphics, and so on but Red Alert really turned me into a gamer instead of a person who like games. -
I'm not sure if it was actually difficult or if it was hard because I sucked at games when I played it, but Warcraft I was one of the most life-sucking games I've ever played. There were maybe two levels in the whole game I didn't have to play repeatedly before I figured out how to beat them. I'm pretty sure I beat the last level but I have no proof and all I remember is intense frustration because it was so horribly, painfully, hair-rippingly difficult.
I truly wish I still had my copy of the CD now because I can't find a copy anywhere and I'd love to take another swing at it. -

Three way tie between Frequency (PS2), Jackie Chan's Action Kung Fu (NES), and Mega Man 2 (NES).
-
Two way tie for me between Operation: Flashpoint - Resistance, and Company of Heroes.

It's difficult to say.
But, overweighting the fun with graphics and innovation, I say Zelda: OoT is the best. It was the first game to feature a huge, free roaming, immersive world and the first to have a real night/day alternance. Beautiful story, beautiful models (with the Cel Shading mod it looks like a modern game) and artworks, very long (for the time), innovative gameplay. -
the first computer game that has impress me was Wolfenstain 3D back in the old days, and then the next one would be Duke Nukem 3D. Then I was addicted to Simcity3000. Then Winning Eleven, Quake3, GT1, GT2(on playstation). lately i am playing underground2 and castle wolfenstein
-
For me it is Mafia. Best game because of the wonderful story line. Like living inside a movie.
-
Ultima 7 would be my pick. Great story, good game engine, 256 colours, good old days.

C&C Red Alert hands down. thousands of moded INI files and tens of thousands 3rd party maps kept me glued to it for about 5-6 years

Fifa 96
, and Half Life 2.
Game developers now think that they can subsitute shader soaked artifacts for good gameplay. Simply does not work. -
Chrono Trigger!
-
I have some fond memories of many late nights and early mornings, 4 guys huddled around the computer waiting for thier turn in Heroes of Might and Magic......barracks life in the army.
-
unbelievable!!!!!! Nobody has voted for Half-Life. Best game engine, graphics, music and incredible story line.
-
final fantasy 7 easily ;0 and zelda OoT

I enjoyed Morrowind a lot, more than Oblivion, which seems weird to me... anyways, there was that... as a kid I played a lot of X-Wing. Really enjoyed that game... Had some good times with some snes games. I enjoyed FFXI a whole ton, especially as a new player. It produced a very good feeling in me... not so much anymore, as it's moved into familiarity, and I don't get to play much these days... FF7 too, for that matter. It was my first contact with final fantasy, and I was younger, so none of the cliches were cliche. It was completely foreign, and great. "Best ever" is very difficult.
Obviously I'm more into rpgs. I tend to think of rts, fps, platformer, and the like as "work". Sometimes I really enjoy platformers. Super Metroid is one of my great memories from the snes. -
Chrono Trigger. 'nuff said.
-
I've only seen one mention of it thus far in this thread, but hands down for me the best game ever was Final Fantasy VII...I beat the game somewhere between 8-10 times trying to find all the hidden little tidbits each time, and personally logged an extraordinary amount of time into it.
On that note, though i'm not well versed in a multitude of games because I usually stick with an RPG or MMORPG for a lengthy amount of time, I would have to cast a vote for Everquest, which, in my opinion, really revolutionized the MMORPG world. I've never played Dark Age of Camelot or Everquest 2 or anything of that nature, but when I finally quit EQ, it is embarrassing to say that I had a level 65 monk, 65 necromancer, and a 65 warrior. However, i'm pleased to say that I was able to walk away from it with about $1700 (thanks ebay!) due to nerds willing to pay extreme amounts of money for pixels of memoryMind you, this sell also came JUST prior to Everquest's major decline in population and popularity (hence all the server combines.)
If anyone would like to remember the good old days of riding the boat in the ocean of tears, looking for epic pieces, getting trained in karnor's castle, the multitude of raids, and the awesomeness that was PvP, send me a PM! -

I cant believe Goldeneye for the N64 hasnt been mentioned. I certainly know alot of my childhood was spent playing that with my brothers and friends. It was awesome!
-
Back in junior high and high school, me and my friends spent countless hours on Contra (NES), Goldeneye and then The World Is Not Enough (N64), Starcraft, Diablo II, and Rainbow Six(PC), and Halo (XBox). Then we all got jobs and rarely had time, and after we graduated everyone went to different places about the country. Now I'm lucky if I have time to play any video games. I really like Oblivion, but with classes, homework, and exams all the time, I don't really have the time to play it much.

1) Fear: only game that had actual made me jump out of my chair during late night gaming
2) HL & HL2: just a great engine and story line
3) Quake II: spent untold hours playing CTF (the wife forgot who I was!)
4) FarCry: awesome graphics
5) Unreal Tournament: I still can't get enough of "Headshots!" -
I will break it down in past, semi-past, and current!
Console side it would have to be Phantasy Star 2 for the SEGA Genesis. My very first Role Playing game that I played twice and beat it.
Counter Strike, Not Source mind you!
I was laid off back in late 98 till the end of 99 and the only game that keep me sane and free was this game.
Battlefield 2142 - nuff said! -
Diablo II, Morrowind, CnC Tiberian Sun, OoT.
All extremely amazing games. Morrowind and D2 and OoT are worth a play even now.
Diablo II turned me into a gamer. I spend hundreds of hours on that game. I'm only 17 now, and it was Diablo II that taught me to type (lol).
Morrowind is handsdown the best RPG that I've ever played, it is increidble, many many times better then Oblivion (which you'll find repeated often if you look through the forums).
Tiberian Sun, was an awesome game, I don't really enjoy it too much now, but it paved the way for modern RTS's.
And OoT, another amazing game. Might not seem like much now (its hard to look past the graphics). But the memorys are great. I love that game (my bro is replaying it on our wii(I got the GCN version)).
There are more out there, I'm enjoying HL2 (yeah I've been out of the PC gaming scene for a while, missed some goodies), Oblivion, and others. But those take the cake. -
Goldeneye is a great call. I would also add in Superbomberman on super nes. and Socom 2 (online) on ps2
-
I really don't now wich was the best, i really like: Maffia, great story!! it really drags you in to it. Operation Flashpoint also is a great game.. Played that for hours and hours on end... Medal of honor: also played that endless online... (I love WOII games) And now i'm addicted to Rainbow Six: Vegas. Just love the way it looks, how you can plan you're moves, and just all the things you can do...

NO mention of Myst for Adventure?
NO mention of a Mario Bros Game for Side Scrollers?
NO mention of Sid Meier's Pirates! for Strategy/RTS ? -

i still think that hl2 or cs were the best games ever made... cs is just so addicting and it takes some skill to be really good... but i think that hl2 was probably one of the most ground breaking games ever. the graphics are amazing it runs on amost anything nowdays and its got a good story line. ive played it at least 10 times ans still not beat it (because of stupid computer dying/ reformat/ getting new computer so i always have to start over)
-
The first UFO (or X-COM) game - I think it was "Enemy Unknown" - is, for me, the best game I've ever played. Great story, great atmosphere, cool graphics for '96...
Other great games: C&C (the original one), Civilization (any version), Blitzkrieg, Mafia. -
-
Rather than say 'best game ever', here's a list of great games in my books, that I consider some of the best game experiences ever.
Gears of War
Resident Evil 4
Mafia
The Longest Journey
Ikaruga
Super Mario World
Goldeneye
Mario 64
Starcraft
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Edit:
Hitman series
Thief
Deus Ex
There are definitely a lot more games, but these are just some of my favorites. -
i really love f.e.a.r. it makes my blood flow fast lol. it would be better if my system could run it at higher settings though =/.
-
hmmm... My first thought was of when I was 7-8 and played Warcraft 2 or maybe Heroes of Might and Magic III... but the game(s) that really stand out are the Monkey Island games: The secret of Monkey Island, Monkey Island 2:LeChucks revenge and primarily The Curse of Monkey Island. Man I had a blast playing that game, i still find it the funniest game i've ever played.
-
I have to add Grim Fandango.
-
Anything from Relic Games... (Company of Heroes, Homeworld, Dawn of War...)
-
For example, no one has mentioned the GTA series: in its genre is the best.
I love also the combat system and the music in Prince of Persia: Warrior Within.
Best stealth game: Splinter Cell series.
Best FPS: probably the most difficult category, as there are a lot of beautiful games... HL2 is the one with the best storyline and music, but Far Cry looks still gorgeous. Special mention for Doom 3 (in the "alien" FPS category), CoD2 ("historical" FPS) and Call of Juarez (Western FPS).
Best RPG: Oblivion
Best side scrolling platform: Super Mario series
and so on... -
Total Annihilation. Fantastic and still a great game to play in skirmish or multiplayer. Play it with my stepdad, my brother, and my mates. Turned me into a gamer this game!!!
-
As for adventure games, I'd have to throw in there Beyond Good and Evil. It's got a great story, great gameplay, and it's just plain fun to play, but it was incredibly under-promoted.
For FPS, while Wolfenstein is the start of it all, Goldeneye revolutionized it and was really the start of multiplayer elements of the genre.
Others worth mentioning (that haven't been), FFIII(for SNES), Metal Gear Solid probably deserves to be in here somewhere. Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past and Super Metroid are worth noting as well. (Sorry for all the SNES references, guess my childhood memories are coming back). -
Freelancer, it just have everything I like.
-
DEUS EX! That game has the best storyline, period.
-
HALO for PC multiplayer!!!!! period the best mofo
Best game ever.
