Belongs in the accessories thread, but I vote for the wired XBOX 360 controller.

Edit: I also vote learning to play PC games the real way - with a keyboard and mouse.

I use an Xbox 360 controller. Works just like it does on the Xbox 360...requires some tweaking if you don't use it on an Xbox360 controller enabled game. Otherwise there are several programs that will "calibrate" the controller for virtually any game out there.

If you really want a gaming controller then the best bet really is the Xbox 360 pad. The PS2 controller doesn't have the best analogue setup for FPS games but really you should be using a mouse and keyboard if thats the genre you wish to play on the PC! :D

The Xbox360 for windows controller doesn't support inverting of the analoge stick, or swapping them, which causes severe issues with some PC games I've used it on. I say, either stick with the mouse and keyboard, or get the logitech version of the dualshock PS2 controller, which DOES support swapping of the stick via logitech's software..

I've got em both, and by far prefer the PS2 style one. (I use it for racing & third person games, Mouse&keyboard for FPS/RTS all the way!)

I've been wondering about this 360 controller as well, because for FPS a keyboard/mouse is really the only way, but for just about any other genre a controller seems to be a little easier.

It's definitely worth picking up a PS2/Xbox etc controller to use for arcade style games, like Marvel Ultimate Alliance..i played it for a few weeks with my mouse and keyboard..and it's just not fun or comfortable when you have to keep hitting the same buttons on your keyboard to attack...

    As for FPS...get yourself a Nostromo pad..i have the N52...very awesome.. :)

360 controller is one of the best controllers ever made, the only thing that really prevents it from taking the top spot is the shoddy d-pad. Terrible for fighting games.

And the way Microsoft handled the controller working with Vista is amazing. No idea if it works this slick on XP, but my Vista laptop auto detects and sets up the 360 controller, and if I plug more then one in, they light up the correct section of the ring of light designating what controller is what player.

Amazing really, works exactly like the console. Great for stuff like MAME or any other game that allows for single machine multiplayer.
