The best game for the PC would have to be Doom 1. Partly because if it were not for Doom 1's (at the time) revolutionary 3D engine and intense gameplay, coupled with great LAN mechanisms, I don't think we would be where we are today. Plus, it was fun as hell to play. It was also very easily modifiable. Doom 1 opened the floodgates to all modern FPS games, and defined the genre.

Final Fantasy VII has to be the best game I played. Had everything I could want in an RPG. But coming close is Counterstrike.

Far Cry - Brilliant (even after the annoying trigents)
Age of empires 2 in 2001 - that game kept me going throughout the summer before uni.
Medal of honour allied assault - the d-day landing section was the best ever and no one has done it since.
    COD 1 , brilliant.
COD 1 expansion pack very good
COD 2 very good but same theme from first one.
Janes WW2 fighters , the best before IL2 Sturmovik
    IL2 Sturmovik
Janes F15 Eagle - most realistic jet sim ever , The Iran section is more relevant then ever - still have it but probably wont work in Vista
    C & C Red alert 2
    C & C Tiberium Wars (VGood)

OK COD 4 single player was awsome but doesnt make the list because it was sooooo F**** short.
Multiplayer doesnt beat a good single player story line that envelopes you.

    Still playing crysis

Warhead is just an expansion, its not Crysis 2 and thus wont continue after Crysis's ending.

Its the parallel story to Crysis, instead of Nomad your Psycho. Starts at the harbor and ends where Crysis ended. So yea it will fill in some of the if any gaps of the Crysis story, but wont continue it.

By the way...I have no idea what the point of that whole spaceship level was...it was so annoying

The shooter I've enjoyed the most and put the most time into would be a mod for BF1942 called Forgotten Hope, which was a realism mod that added tons of new weapons, armies, maps, vehicles, ect. and it was a smaller community of gamers so there weren't any idiots, everyone played realistically and intelligently so there were some great battles. Forgotten Hope 2 finally came out on the BF2 engine, but I haven't really gotten into it yet because it is currently limited to the North African theater. My favorite game overall though has to be an old racing game called "Grand Prix Legends". I'm a huge racing sim fan, and this '98 game still feels current after all the 3rd party graphics updates because the physics were spot on from the start, very challenging and very rewarding. I've moved on to GTR2, but I'll still play GPL for a throwback every now and then. Great games!

Diablo 2 + LoD hands down has stolen...no i have willingly given away days of my life to this game.

Now the TC only wanted one game listed but since everyone else is doing it...

Dragon Warrior Monsters 2: Tara's Adventure/Cobi's Journey. If your tired of pokemon being the "best monster collecting rpg" out there you gotta check this out, its old (GBC) though. If the graphics throw you off you can try the one for DS called Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker, but imo its not as good.

Half-Life 2 is very close to being my top also, the action, the physics, the story/environment...epic. When I completed this game and the eps i got really sad CAUSE I WANT MORE.

That is so old school... damn, I feel old. Good choice, btw.

The name reminded me of Star Control though. I used to play that all the time, back in the day. The blue guy with the shield, speedy jacks ship, plasma ball firing sphere, dreadnaught with the little ships, a flame thrower, and one that shot green gunk to slow you down. Memories!

Some other oldies (I haven't seen listed yet) but goodies:

Oregon Trail - grade school!!! everyone would always get malaria and die.

Gorilla (for Qbasic I think) - the one where two gorillas on opposite sides take turns throwing bananas at each other, think old school worms.

Wing Commander - I remember the simulator they had in the bar, the funerals with the jetisoning of the coffins, and how no one would want to talk to you after your wingman dies. Long live Angel, Maniac, and Paladin. The movie was okay, could have been better.

Wing Commander IV. It's what got me into PC gaming. Great action and great story.

    But by genre:
RTS: Total Annihilation > Company of Heroes > Supreme Commander > Sins of a Solar Empire
TBS: Civ IV > GalCiv II
Space Sim: Wing Commander IV > FreeSpace 2 > XvT > Freelancer
RPG: KotOR > Freedom Force > Freedom Force TRR .. (slot saved for Fallout 3 :p )
    FPS: BF1942 > TF2 > BioShock > Medal of Honor Allied Assault > CoD 2
    Windows: Minesweeper
MMO: Eve Online > MPBT 3025 (Didn't make it out of beta) > EnB

Special Mention to a couple that don't fit a category: Mechwarrior 2 Titanium Trilogy and Sid Meier's Pirates!

Hmmm Id have to say the Thief series for me. Very well rounded set of games in terms of gameplay, story, level design, etc

There are a few other games that tie with it but I just want to give Thief some lovin since the originals dont work on Vista :(
