My shiny new Zepto 6625 should be with me in the next few days! It will be my first PC/laptop with dedicated graphics.
Suppose I haven't played a game in the last 5 years...(which is basically true what with my *£(&^"*£"-awful integrated intel graphics)
Which five "golden-oldies" (as in, not last six-months...!) do you recommend I go pick up on the cheap?
I'm into FPS/RPG/action/bit of racing/bit of RTS...anything "good" (whatever that means) really...

Only my personal opinon these are the best of these 5 years...
FPS
1)Half Life 2 Orange Box
2)Stalker / F.e.a.r.
3)Call of Duty 2
RPG
1)Neverwinter Nights 2
2)The Witcher
3)Oblivion
RACING
1)GTR 2
2)Trackmania United
RTS/TBS
1)Medieval 2 Total War
2)Warhammer 4k with all expansions
3)Civilization IV
Have Fun! -
To start with...
-Half Life 2 (FPS)
-Oblivion (RPG)
-Warcraft 3 (RTS) -
STALKER
FEAR
Hitman
Half Life2
Mafia
Farcry
Call of Duty2 -
I don't tend to have the same tastes as most gamers, or even play games made within the last five years. But here's a few "on the cheap" recommendations:
Racing
1) Trackmania Nations. Free at www.trackmanianations.com (the official site).
FPS
1) Battlefield 2. $10.
2) Halo 1. $20.
3) Orange Box. $50. Never actually played any of the games in it, but it's 5 games for $50...almost certainly a good deal.
4) Battlefield 1942 Complete Collection. $30. BF1942 with all expansions + Battlefield Vietnam.
Strategy
1) Company of Heroes. $30.
2) Medieval II Total War. $40 I think, but I've heard it's really good.
3) Civilization III Complete. $20. Not 3D, but cheaper and more complete than CivIV, and CivIV is pretty poor 3D graphics.
RPG: No idea. For me RPG usually means "rocket-propelled grenade" in an FPS game instead of "role-playing game". Unless it's Mafia, but I'd only heard of the in-person (non-electronic) version before the above post. -
My personal list from they top of my head now..
Strategy
1. Civilization IV
2. Red Alert 2
3. Company of Heroes
FPS
1. Orange Box
2. Farcry
3. Doom 3

I'd mix it up a bit:
Half Life 2 (all series)
Nfs Carbon
Stalker
FEAR
Crysis
Prince of Persia - 1,2,3
Legacy of Kain
My personal favorites, maybe not in that specific order, but , it goes -
If you don't mind the possibility of becoming completely addictive and paying to play your online RPG games then check out World of Warcraft.
-
Everytime someone says Oblivion is a good game god kills a kitten -.-
Anyhow:
FPS:
Half Life 2
Bioshock
Call of Duty 4
RPG:
Diablo II: LoD (pushing 6 years I know but still awesome)
Morrowind
The Witcher
RTS:
Warcraft 3: TFT
C&C3
Company of Heroes -
haha...lol.
thanks for all that - i decided a while back that I have an addictive personality so I'm never going to touch Warcraft...!
I'm thinking I'll pick up half life 2, episode 1 + 2, (that IS three games, right, and not two??) Medieval Total war, CoD4, Bioshock maybe, doom 3 and GTA SA...I guess the advantage of playing the old games "fresh" now on new hardware is that I'll be able to crank up the visuals and play on native resolution (1680X1050) even though the 8600GT is really a midrange card.
Thanks! -
I've found the following, in no particular order, to my likeing:
NFS CARBON
NFS MostWanted
StarWarsBattleFront II
Civilization III
Civilization IV

Don't just get HL2, 1, and 2, get the Orange Box instead. It has those games, plus Team Fortress 2 and Portal.
Here's my list:

RPG
Knights of the Old Republic I and II

), Company of Heroes (Awesome LAN party game... It can get so intense and tactical when you're playing with friends in the same room!), Warcraft 3 (pushing 5 years, but Ladder/Melee is still fun nonetheless), Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War (and the expansions), and Homeworld 2 (extremely epic!). Yeah... I'm a big RTS junkie
