My shiny new Zepto 6625 should be with me in the next few days! It will be my first PC/laptop with dedicated graphics.
Suppose I haven't played a game in the last 5 years...(which is basically true what with my *£(&^"*£"-awful integrated intel graphics)

Which five "golden-oldies" (as in, not last six-months...!) do you recommend I go pick up on the cheap?

I'm into FPS/RPG/action/bit of racing/bit of RTS...anything "good" (whatever that means) really...

Civilization IV isn't a Real Time Strategy (RTS). It's a Turn Based Strategy (TBS). Multiplayer Civilization games usually have Simultaneous Turns to make it go a bit quicker, but even that is still turn-based.

I don't tend to have the same tastes as most gamers, or even play games made within the last five years. But here's a few "on the cheap" recommendations:

    Racing
    1) Trackmania Nations. Free at www.trackmanianations.com (the official site).

    FPS
    1) Battlefield 2. $10.
    2) Halo 1. $20.
    3) Orange Box. $50. Never actually played any of the games in it, but it's 5 games for $50...almost certainly a good deal.
    4) Battlefield 1942 Complete Collection. $30. BF1942 with all expansions + Battlefield Vietnam.

    Strategy
    1) Company of Heroes. $30.
    2) Medieval II Total War. $40 I think, but I've heard it's really good.
    3) Civilization III Complete. $20. Not 3D, but cheaper and more complete than CivIV, and CivIV is pretty poor 3D graphics.

RPG: No idea. For me RPG usually means "rocket-propelled grenade" in an FPS game instead of "role-playing game". Unless it's Mafia, but I'd only heard of the in-person (non-electronic) version before the above post.

If you don't mind the possibility of becoming completely addictive and paying to play your online RPG games then check out World of Warcraft.

    haha...lol.

thanks for all that - i decided a while back that I have an addictive personality so I'm never going to touch Warcraft...!

I'm thinking I'll pick up half life 2, episode 1 + 2, (that IS three games, right, and not two??) Medieval Total war, CoD4, Bioshock maybe, doom 3 and GTA SA...I guess the advantage of playing the old games "fresh" now on new hardware is that I'll be able to crank up the visuals and play on native resolution (1680X1050) even though the 8600GT is really a midrange card.

    Thanks!

FEAR Combat (great free online FPS ;)), Company of Heroes (Awesome LAN party game... It can get so intense and tactical when you're playing with friends in the same room!), Warcraft 3 (pushing 5 years, but Ladder/Melee is still fun nonetheless), Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War (and the expansions), and Homeworld 2 (extremely epic!). Yeah... I'm a big RTS junkie :p.
