Well, obviously the fewer pixels the GPU has to drive, the faster the framerate and the higher you can turn up the settings.
However, it's not quite that clear. Most games scale/change resolution fairly easily without losing focus/becoming fuzzy. For this reason, you can alter your game resolution independently of your native resolution.
So, in summary, I would buy the resolution that you like for everyday use, such as web browsing, paper writing, etc.
For me that would probably be WSXGA+, but it's all up to personal preference. Go see them in person and decide what you like -
Speaking for myself, I opted for the 1280x800 WXGA, because since I'm running with a 8600m GT, that's the max res that I'll be expecting to run newer games with high detail anyway, so I made it my native resolution.
I'd probably like browsing the web in a higher res, but I'm used to the 1280x, so it won't bother me too much. -
Asus G1's(and others with same res) look good with 1680x1050 res. I think the Alienware's 1920x1200 on a 15.4" is way too much.

I think 1440x900 is the sweet spot for 15.4 inches. 1680x1050 is my favorite for 17 inches.
That said, I don't have perfect 20/20 eyesight, so maybe that is why I find those resolutions ideal.
Best gaming resolution for a 15.4?
