Ok - redid an approach to London City at 1600x900 and I get an extra 3-4fps at night and day settings.

As to looks - its noticeabley not as crisp, but not unpleasant. I think if you mainly fly low and slow then the higher res might be better for you - I mainly fly GA aircraft at sub 4,000 ft so I like nice views, lots of autogen etc.

My reason for going for the higher res screen was not gaming related though - really makes a differance I find for spreadsheets/websites etc. Frankly Id say go for the higher res screen, then you have the option to downgrade the res - you cant do it the other way!

3-4 that kinda sucks lol. I have a gtx 285m so that might help haha.

@laptopnut, im going for 1080p as i may end up using FS9 with loads of addons, and other games im not too fussed if i have one graphics setting a bit lower.
Thanks to both of you you have been very helpful.
I really wanted to get good old UK2000 heathrow airport with ai traffic in there somewhere, seems FS9 may be better, but il have a better idea when it arrives.
    Are you using SP2 DX10?

Do you guys think the GTX 300s will be compatible with this?
    Thanks

With the I7 820qm and gtx 285m will i be able to max out FS9?
Im thinking just get loads of addons for that?
FSX is so bloody demanding lol

I mean 3-4 more than i was getting at the higher res - so mid to late 20's. Will definitely be better with the 285M, but I hear that FSX is more stimulated by the processor than the GFX card.

I steer clear of LHR - I hate queuing for take-off (despite being British!)

Lol, have you ever used FS9, if all goes wrong then il just go and max that out.
You have a 920xm which benefits you lol, do you know if the gtx 300s will be compatible with this, just for the future?
    Thanks.
P.s Will heathrow be worse or better than london city for fps, im not very familiar with city, its kinda an unknown quantity lol.

The GTX 300's may be compatible if they are released in the same MXM 3.0B format and if they are within the thermal budget requirements. There is a very good chance that it will be compatible but expect to pay anywhere from £300+ for a GPU upgrade, most likely more. I guess you could always sell your GTX 285M though.

The performance of the GTX 285M is excellent so far, I am even hitting up to 40 fps on Saints Row 2 maxed out apart from AA which is very poorly optimised. Arkham Asylum over 50 fps on all high.

I don't know anything about FS9. It may not even support my resolution but there are usually ways of editing files to force custom resolutions anyway. It may have been patched to support additional resolutions too.

I checked out the Sager, I think the price is just under $1600 US, yes?
By the time I get it into Canadian $$, and add 13% HST to import it, it ends up costing about the same as the Alienware M15x, and the only diff in specs is the Sager has the 285 GPU, whereas the M15x has the the 260.
Plus I like the way the Alienware looks (but that of course is personal pref!), and have had good support from Dell over the years.
I too have FS 2004, and will max that out if FSX doesn't work great. But I'm expecting it'll be fine.
Just have to decide if I want to order now, or since I'm not in a huge rush, wait for the next update..

Lol im flying from the UK to Los Angeles to pick it up and meet family, so i have a set date and am going to buy at last minute lol.
Im hearing conflicting things all the time and keeps confusing me.
I really really want Ultimate Traffic 2 and UK2000 Heathrow in FSX, but doubt its going to be possible lol!

Heathrow will be much worse than London City - far more aircraft movements for FSX to keep track of

FS9 will go as high as your cards allows. And you can always edit the fs9.cfg file to use funky resolutions.
