Alright what are some of the best soundtracks you have heard in games

I would say the gears of war theme and
The street fighter IV second intro song:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dU0MZ9ONxw4&fmt=18

Those are probably some of the best I've heard

If you're into a more retro and/or techno scene the tracks from System Shock 2 are freaking legendary. Can't give you a youtube link cause I'm at work right now, later.

Like music from gears of war as well (and the comercials for the game when it came out :p "mad world" - gary jules).

Both of the "Gears of Wars" had great tv commercials and music but I never really noticed the music while playing the games.

The "Final Fantasy" series has always been renowned for its music even though lately most can't be found on the computer (I remember near the end of FFX one particularly good song when everyone is sitting round a campfire before heading towards the final boss). Think in Japan they have FF concerts or something similar.

There are other games like the "Tony Hawk" (Tony Hawk 2!) series and the "GTA" series but don't think they count since the music isn't original.

    Copied from the other post:

F-Zero series. For F-Zero, F-Zero X, and F-Zero GX and the portable versions, the music was one of the most important parts of the overall, epic, experience. I listen to the tunes all the time, including while driving. It's so fitting and I note how the music also affects how well I perform. In F-Zero X, it makes you want to smash the other machines and in F-Zero GX, it goes along with high speeds and boosting past the competition. Simply stunning.

Other than F-Zero, the Metroid series was amazing. When I first played Super Metroid, my mouth dropped when I heard the music coming from a SNES. They fit the environment, give you eerie feelings, motivate you to contine and keep searching until you defeat the final boss.

I'm surprised no one mentioned the Final Fantasy games yet. I just turned on my FFVII soundtrack and, while simple and hokey, does a great job of supplying an appropriate backdrop to the game.

The SFIV opening song does get me pumped every time I go to play it though.

The Halo series has some of the best game music ever. Bioshock's music is eerily fitting and really adds to the game experience.

Streets of Rage and its sequel had an outstanding soundtrack of original music.

LucasArts adventure games were my favorite...Full Throttle was already mentioned...Grim Fandango was excellent...and my favorite were the Caribbean flavored soundtracks to the Monkey Island games from midi to CD audio...

I agree with Red Alert series...awesome techno-style music...almost club worthy...

Civ 2 and Heroes of Might and Magic 2 had great CD audio soundtracks...(HoMM2 had the opera singer button to select CD audio vs midi)...

And finally, Interstate 76 was the funkiest, grooviest original soundtrack...I think even Rick James was envious of that soundtrack...I think I read somewhere that the I-76 soundtrack was done by Third Eye Blind's original bass player...

is it cheating to suggest the grand theft auto series? :p coz...the music is actual songs and ever so often the music-vehicle-situation combo is just perfect!

i like the original doom soundtrack and it was fun hearing the redone version of the original knee-deep in the dead music with the doom3 engine.

tetris on the nintendo game boy. just typing it i can hear the music :)

half-life was good for those moments when something happens (getting the hev suit the first time, the armor plated big guy, the ambush before the lake, getting the rocket launcher, iirc).

diablo had excellent mood-music but the loop does get annoying after a while.
