The hands down best story games are adventure games like The Longest Journey, Myst, and others. They dont focus on action to make a good game, they focus entirely on the story.

Just want to second "The Longest Journey"; excellent storyline, and a main character you end up genuinely caring about. I'd have to say that I haven't played a game since then that I enjoyed as much.

I actually still need to play Dreamfall; I know it's not supposed to be quite up there with TLJ, but I think I'd still enjoy it.

Oh yeah, another game to check out is "Beyond Good & Evil", which you can normally find pretty cheap.

Dreamfall isnt as good as TLJ, but its still an awesome game. Worlds above just about every other title released in the last few years.

    Thats great too!

Going to go a bit off topic here: I have played a number of adventure games like The Longest Journey, Grim Fandango, Money Island series etc. and I absolutely hate The Longest Journey. The pace was too slow, the puzzles were boring as was the storyline. I suppose the storyline is quite conclusive and there are no lose ends, but I just found the whole game so boring.

Anyway, I quite liked the storyline of the Prince of Persia series and Legacy of Kain series (play them in order of release, otherwise the storyline might get spoilt). Of course, if you are after older games, Grim Fandango is my top recommendation. The game had me go LOL quite often - which is a rare event (when I game that is).

Max Payne and it's sequel offer some great film-noir style storylines, done in graphic novel cutscenes and dark narration.

Also Splinter Cell: Double Agent has a fun, multi-layered plot that is actually comprehensible (unlike it's predecessors).

It does help. But is it necessary? Nope. I played HL2 first, then HL1.

The Syberia series has a really neat storyline, if you like point and click adventure.

Longest Journey is pretty darn awesome too.

    Yea The Longest Journey.

Grim Fandango. Half-Life 1 and 2 have a fair amount of backstory, but it isn't conveyed to you very well. FEAR is decent as well.

But it's kinda nesessary to play HL2 before you play HL2: Episode One. Unless you don't care what's going on.

Deus Ex and System Shock 2 probably have the best storylines to be found in a shooter to date.

i too found the longest journey a bit tedious, but the story concept was interesting. i thought the story line is dreamfall was better...but it has horrible ending.

i have always been a fan of the monkey island series.

i don't know i you would call kotor rpg, but both are quite good.

Mafia was the first game that came to my mind. An oldie, but definately a goodie. Ive seen it in stores for as low as $10.

    Beyond Good & Evil definitely!

    Max Payne wasn't bad either.
If you have the patience for something Civilization-like, digging up Alpha Centauri might be worth a shot. (That had a surprising amount of story. Good stuff :))

And as others have suggested, adventure games (The Longest Journey, Dreamfall + anything from LucasArts)
(Dreamfall's ending alone made the entire game worth it. Awfully sad ending, and a bit of a cliffhanger, but it's just so rare to see a game that doesn't just do "and they lived happily ever after", so bonus points for that)

Half-Life 1 and 2 (especially 2 had a lot of emphasis on story), and Deus Ex

I have a feeling that all that people play here is: CS, Warcraft, FarCry, HL, BF and such. Which is all nice... but deadly boring. People c'mon, there's a whole other world of games out there!

    Definately should-must check-out:

Mafia - graphics are not too modern, but storyline is a major strength of this amazing game. If you like Godfather (and who doesn't?) (and I mean movie; not that crappy game they did) you will love this game! Strong atmosphere of living through the game.

and Syberia 1 and 2 - most beautiful quest-game ever. You don't play it, you just stare at it :)

SilentHill and MaxPayne are also nice.

I found out that Metal Gear Solid 2 was ported to PC, and it has bar none the most interesting story I have ever seen (outside of a book.)

    Giants: Citizen Kabuto

It's a weird game which is a mix of many different types of games with an involved and completely goofy storyline. I never got too far into it but my brother did and even though he's pretty good at games he had the toughest time beating it.

yah man! Good taste. BG&E was great, along with Dreamfall. Also check out Indigo Prophecy (forgot the real name for it).

I also really thought System Shock 2 had a nice plot to it.

Serious Sam had a great plot too! j/k
    How about Half-life?

But really, I can't remember. It's been so long since I've played PC games...

i don't find the story in half-life 2 all that appealing, the settings and atmosphere are great, but the story does'nt make sense to me. if you'r looking for a really great plot, try deus ex, mafia, oblivion, max payne or KOTOR.
