    Hi,

Can anybody please make any recommendations about a good screen for games?

I am about to buy another notebook, and the one I'm currently favouring is the Acer Travelmate 8000. This has a Radeon 9700 128meg video card and a a 15" screen with 1400 * 1050 native resolution.

The reason that I am loking for a screen with a 4 * 3 display ratio is that I have a number of older games that won't display properly in widescreen format . Plus I never ever watch DVDs on a computer. I also don't really want the extra size of a widescreen on those occasions when it will travel.

My question is this - how well does a 1400 * 1050 display handle games? None of the games that I checked (from Far Cry backwards) offer 1400 * 1050 as a display option. I usually favour 1024 * 768, which would appear to mean that each pixel on screen would be trying to fudge displaying about one and a third game pixels?? How does this actually work, and would the Acer 8000 be a good machine for gaming as well as general work?

Thanks for any opinions or info.

I would go the 1024 * 768 as this is about the most the current crop of GPUs (ie 9700) will handle. Thus it don't matter what farcry or any other games resolution abilities are, I doubt you will ever get there. Also if you go for higher res, then you will prob. still end up playing games at 1024 * 768, which is a non-native res and the game won't look as nice anyway.

ps I went for a WSXGA screen, its great for DVDs and office stuff but games do suffer a bit, Doom3 was the worst..it looked pretty crap/blury playing at 800x600 streched over 1680x1050 screen. Although farcry and Hl2 don't seem to be as badly effected?

    Thanks mate, [ :)]

Interesting to hear your experiences with games. Do you know any good machines with a native res of 1024*768? All the ones I've checked out have been either 1400*1050, or widescreen versions with the same 1050 height. Maybe I need to look for screens smaller than 15"?

I've been building my own desktop machines for over 10 years and have got used to the freedom to build whatever I want. I'm finding out that the world of notebooks is very different! [ :(] Not much opportunity to vary the specs a lot.

My last laptops were only used for word processing, and very simple games, but this time I'm hoping to get something that will do gaming and office work. Not as easy as I thought, even allowing an open ended budget. [:I]

If you can handle a wide screen, the new Fujitsu N6000 is pretty hot. The display is amazing and it's got an ATI 9700 128MB card.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll check it out.

I am pretty stuck on the idea of not having a widescreen though. From what I read, there seem to be too many hassles and unknowns with trying to get some of my older games running properly in widescreen format.

There's a machine on the market here now (I think it's the equivalent of a Sager in the USA) that has 256meg Geforce 6800 Go graphics on a PCI express board, (and all the jazz), which would be a screamer, but that also has a widescreen. There are one or two others with 256meg Radeon 9700s too, but alas they're widies also.

    Well I recommend below;

    1-Sony Vaio a190(for turkey,europe series,dont know in usa)
    Xbrite screen 90000:1 conrast (amazing screen)ati 9700 64mb
2-Toshiba Quismo f10-g10(again for Turkey I write,it must be different series in your country, but specs must be same)
Trubright Quismo engine (amazing too,ý couldnt manage to choose which one)
    3-Acer 1700(it s same in all)superb screen...

For me the resolution s not so much important than NIT points. The main thing is the quality of screen, its NIT,conrast(the common conrasts for notebook screens are between 300:1-800:1)I know Toshiba uses with battery 400 NIT...So if you ask me which one do u select below?
    a)15.4" WSXGA-WUXGA
    b)15.4" WXGA(but xbrite-or trubright tech-also hp's brightview)
absolutely the second one is my selection. So ý dont live any problem with these resolutions why I play farcry,2005 fifa, prosoccer 6,wolfestein,pain killer, men of valor, medal of honour 2,the warrior, battlefield 2,doom3(out,it sucks for me),roma total wars, etc
