What screen size would be best for gaming on a 15.4"? I was thinking about 1440 x 900, as I'll never play games in 1680 x 1050 anyways...

    1) Glossy, widescreen 15.4 inch display (1280x800)

    2) Anti-glare, widescreen 15.4 inch display (1280x800)

    3) High Resolution, glossy widescreen 15.4 inch display (1680x1050)

    4) High Resolution, glossy widescreen 15.4 inch display (1440x900)

I chose 1440x900. I just didn't think the 8600M GT (atleast i got that) would be powerful enough for 1680x1050

    Depends on your system specs
I can play wow, cs: source, and C&C3 on 1680x1050.
I like the Glossy also because of the way it brings out the colors. It looks great... but sucks if you have light behind u.
And having the desktop run in 1680x1050 is very nice for desktop space, as long as you dont mind the small fonts.

Does the 8600M GT work well at 1680x1050?

Would a 1280 x 800 anti-glare screen with the 8600M GT work well for gaming?

...or would the 1680x1050 look that much better even if you are running games at lower resolutions?

I have a 24" wide screen LCD for my desktop, and i think the glossy laptop one looks better personally... other then the size(which is the reason i still use my desktop, 9 inch bigger screen makes a huge difference). But like i said the glare can kill it, if theres a window behind u or something like that. I have the 8600m gt GDDR3, if your going with anything but an asus g1s or a macbook pro, it may not handle it as well as mine does.

That's one of the reasons I'm thinking of ditching a 15.4": A 17" will always look better and can accomodate a better GPU...

If I do go with a 15.4" I may opt for the lower resolution, as it may be hard to appreciate 1680 x 1050 on that small a screen. I'll never run games in that resolution anyways.

if u dont care about portability or price, a 17" is the way to go. u can get a clevo 17" with a 7950gt video card for around 2300 bucks. the screen can run at 1920x1200 resolution. The dell M1710 with the same specs will cost more, but the FN and CTRL buttons are in the right places!

The 8600m GT handles older games very well at 1680x1050. I can play Half-Life 2 maxed out at 1680x1050 and it's pretty awesome. Newer games don't handle quite as well, but I was able to have Gothic 3 (similar requirements to oblivion) at medium settings at 1680x1050 playing fairly smoothly, with some hiccups now and then. Future games you'll probably have to turn the resolution down, but I do enjoy having the option to go up to the 1680x1050 now and then. Plus, it just makes for a larger desktop.

So the primary benefit of 1680x1050 in a 15.4" is to have a better looking desktop?

I can't imagine playing too many games on a 15.4" with a high frame rate at that resolution.

Would the screen look any worse running lower than the native resolution?

I have a non glare (matte) 1650 x 1080 and it looks great, even when plaing games at 1280 x 800. It's a samsung panel.

But playing at non-native will look worse than native. How much depends on the game. Bioshock at 1280x800 is hard for me to see the difference from 1440x900 (my native), but it's very obvious in oblivion. How much you're affected also depends on you. Some are not disturbed at all, while others (like me) get quite irked.

I run CS:Source at 1680x1050 with everything turned up high on Acer Ferrari 4005 which as an ATI x700 card with 128mb of dedicated memory. This resolution for gaming seems ideal for a 15.4 inch widescreen.

I beg to differ. I personally feel that 1440x900 is the perfect resolution for a 15.4" gaming laptop.

I have 1680 x 1050 on my 17" gaming laptop. That is perfect for me.

Plus, because 15.4" laptops generally max out with midrange graphics cards, you don't have to even attempt to push the card quite as aggressively as you would if you were pushing 1680x1050.

I play at 1650x1080 on my laptop and one desktop. So far, every game i have played has been maxed out at this res, expect bioshock, which i bumped down to 1440x960

I have run Guild War and CS:Source on 1680x1050 with settings maxed without AA graphic and speed are awesome. However I can only run FEAR on 1440x900 resolution not sure why. But it doesn't make any noticable difference for me going down to 1440x900 or 1280x800 resolution with FPS game. My matte screen looks just as good as my friend's gateway laptop glossy screen. For me I'll do word processing and web browsing on native 1680x1050 resolution and games in any resolution depend on gaming performance.

I'd go with the glossy, the color looks a lot better in my opinion.

Well, I love my matte 1440x900. I don't have to worry as much about overstressing my GPU or worry about reflections. Admittedly colours might not have the same wow factor as glossy screens, but they look fine to me, and I guess the feeling that matte screens usually have more accurate colour is reassuring enough to make up for it. And well, this thread is about gaming, but I'm pretty sure that's not all you use your laptop for and personally I find text on 1680x1050 too small.

I think 1440x900 is a better gaming res for a 8600 if you're going to play newer games. My X1900XTX on my desktop has problems keeping games smooth at 1680x1050 with all effects on. I wouldn't want to try to play on a 8600, which is slower, at the native resolution in newer games coming out.
