I had been looking forwards to Sim City Societies for quite a while, for the simple fact that it lets you create a 1984-esque Police State, complete with "Re-education Centers" and propaganda telescreens. Unfortunately, that game has gotten pretty mediocre reviews, so I'll probably be holding off on buying it, at least until it gets a nice price drop.

But, at the risk of sounding like a sociopath, I'm curious about what other types of games will satiate my desire to rule over the unwashed masses with an iron fist? Anybody know of some other neat games that will let me get my Big Brother fix?

The Sims 2, depending on how you play it. Though that won't work i quite the same way tbh.

Dungeon Keeper, Dungeon Keeper 2, Evil Genius (mentioned above), Black and White and its sequel, Overlord, Tropico and its paradise island expansion all allow some degree of evil when being the boss.

The Dungeon keeper series I think started the trend off.

Black and White 2 is good. You can even train your 'pet' to eat your people, cast lightning bolts and fireballs and stuff like that. You can summon volcanos, hurricanes, etc. You can also sacrifice your own villagers to make mana. Too bad the game doesn't have multiplayer though. But the singleplayer is already quite satisfying, especially the later levels.

Paradise Island introduced martial law, using the military to kill opposing candidates, arresting troublemakers, throwing people into prison and other rather amusing diversions apart from the obvious swiss bank account ruse.
