I know it was supposed to be different, but I still find the Ebon Hawk flying off to the TSL Jedi theme tune a rather wondrous image.

I agree with you, I loved both of those games very much. The ending for KOTOR 2 wasn't terrible though either, but maybe not as epic. Though, the whole thing having to only use your character instead of your "team" which you built up throughout the entire storyline really sucked.
I also really liked Freelancer... -
I really don't understand what's so great about the story in mass effect :/
The game had it's highs and lows but the story was cliché I think, during the entire game I had something like a déja vu, like I've heard it all before. I never really had that wow didn't saw that one coming feeling. NOT that intruiging. I kept on reading good reviews about the game and mostly it was mentioned: the story is cinematically brought like only bioware can! And I'm like "What?!!" The story was imo a downer...
Feel free to confirm
Last good game story I had was from the second expansion pack for Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer. That story really caught me. Very original and deep.
Anyone else played it? -
Precisely, the 'forced' ending simply broke the experience of what seemed to be a masterpiece, especially all the depth found within the characters.

Xenogears biggest con though was how thoroughly boring some parts of the game were vs the high points. It really fluctuates around. But overall, the game really just kicks the of every other game in terms of story. For those of you going "????" just read about it. IT'S LIFE CHANGING O_O -
I love the whole Halo storyline. It's cool when you put it all together.
-
Halo? talk about a crappy story.. And Half lifes story was good, but it just ran on after awhile kinda like farcry.
-
considering the amount of hollywood crap we get nowadays i believe that most top rated rpg's have more compelling stories!
gone are the days when we get the same old cliche's for every game. in fact, movies seem to get a lot of their latest inspiration from videogames and comicbooks.
great games like bioshock, mass effect, the kotor series have had more of a lasting impact on me storywise.
i think its a reflection of the increasing level of sophistication ( and profits) on the part of game developers and a lack of genuine creativity on hollywood's part.
what we are seeing i believe is the slow evolution of mass market entertainment slowly shifting to gaming - or as some may call it in the past : virtual reality
just my thoughts guys
-
I don't know if anyone mentioned it but I loved the old school classic "full Throttle" great game... way ahead of it's time!
-
Bioshock and KOTOR.
My jaw literally dropped at the plot twist in KOTOR. I was just like "WHAT? WHAT? WHAT?" Totally unexpected. -
lol KOTOR must be the most popular mention in this thread, it was an amazing game though best RPG i've ever played.

The Homeworld series tells a pretty solid story, also the Half Life series. Alot of people mention Mass Effect but I didn't personally find it gripping enough to finish
-
Man, now I HAVE to go back and play KOTOR.
-
LOL, I too reloaded it back up after reading this thread
-
FF7 and FFX for me.
Chrono Trigger would be close because I liked the whole time travel thing and the plot twist, but I actually don't remember a lot about the story.
one game that I wanted to get when I buy a ps3 is Uncharted
rake's Fortune. This game has a whole cinematic feel to it, which reminds me of hollywood action/adventure movies so it makes it even more fun/engaging to play through than it already is with it's gameplay. I'm sure the story in this game is suppose to be good.
I know the MGS series is known for it's story, but I haven't played any of those yet. I'll probably just get 4.
HL2 has great characters interaction and environments for where the story takes place, but I think that the story is left too wide open -
lol i just finished the first KOTOR, on to the 2nd
-
If I can't find my KOTOR CD's, then is there somewhere I can buy it (download preferred).

I totally agree with you Psynalizer...i heard so much about the Mass Effect story line/plot also...but i was disappointed....i have not replayed it with different choices bu the story seems pretty linear to me...Saren and Reapers were the enemies from first chapter till the end....no twists...no turns...other than the little hold up in the citadel before last mission on Ilos. Gameplay and cutscenes were very nice done but the stroy was "meh".
Almost all blizzard games have one of the best and deep stories around with complex characters....Other than that...MSG series....Legacy of Kain & Soul Reaver series...Bioshock....FF VII...and ofcourse...KOTOR.
Also....GTA III:vice city did a good job of ripping Scarface for story plot also...
-
I completely agree with you and didn't mean to imply that one had nothing to do with the other. I was thinking of games like Septerra Core and Oddworld...
The environments are incredibly original and unique, but the stories are nothing new...despite the unique evironment, Septerra Core is a very typical RPG...bad guy/gal/it wants to destroy everything, the whatever-it-is item is broken in x amount of pieces...go find them before the bad guy/gal/it finds the pieces...little background to the characters, and no compelling reason to care other than I'm neurotic and wanted to finish the game...
But the environment in Bioshock, very imaginative and detailed, absolutely supports the story and feeling of dread/confusion...Bioshock goes for a feeling of isolationism (you vs the world) whereas Half-Life 2 has you continuously interacting with allies and enemies so it's hard to compare the two (and I haven't finished Bioshock)...
Meanwhile, the setting in Half-Life 2 isn't really that original or imaginative (it is very detailed), but the sequence in Half-Life 2 right before you get into the Citadel just made you feel like part of the story...the humans are tired of being oppressed by their alien masters and terran puppet leaders, and you finally feel a part of the group that's going to win its first victory, but at a cost...not a very original story, and alien occupation themes have been done several times for TV, movies and books...but you feel part of the story...I actually cared and almost, almost forgot I was playing a game...
And Blizzard...hmmm...don't get me wrong...I love Blizzard's games and think they're tremendously fun...but I'm still scratching my head about the 'story' in Starcraft (lots of different factions within the different races, but I never got a clear idea of being on different sides or fighting for anything in particular other than getting to the next level); Warcraft and Warcraft 2 had lots of character's names, but in the end, I didn't feel like you were advancing a story until the Dark Portal expansion...I felt Warcraft 3 was very story-based...and then there was a book explosion about Azeroth prior to WoW and people on the web debating WoW characters...it was all very confusing to me...but I agree there's depth to Warcraft 3 and WoW...not so much the first two...
And the story behind Diablo...hmmm...was there a story? How many NPCs in that game had a conversation tree? I thought the story was pretty much that an evil being wrecked your town and you need to level up a few times to reach him at the bottom of a random dungeon and kill him...Diablo 2 improved the story and the cutscenes (they actually had something to do with the story), but it still doesn't rank as a 'classic' story for me...although killing the demoness who bathed in blood is something I always felt was creepy...and then Hostel 2 used the idea... -
Bioshock .
-
The Metal Gear Solid series takes the cake for me. Bioshock comes in a close second. As many have noted, Square can tell a good story, so I'm also really fond of the Final Fantasy Tactics story (though a bit convoluted).
-
As I said that one caught me by surprise as well. I made it about halfway through the second cut scene and that was it. I have no idea what the story was and I logged some hours trying various character builds. Did a zillion cow runs, you know the drill. I have heard more than one gamer call it one of the best games ever but never until this thread did i see anyone give any love to the story. No insult intended to the fellow that said it was so, if it worked for him then more power to him.
-
Crysis and Far Cry - just kidding.
Bioshock had some nice plot twists...I should have paid more attention to the flashbacks. -
Diablo 2's story line was great. The epic battle between Baal and Tyrael was a good scene.
Also, Zelda's Windwalker was a favorite of mine. -

I forgot about FEAR (the first one, not the second >:/) it's story was excellently played out just like the game was. FEAR 2 just felt kinda "meh" thanks to it's consolization.
And Far Cry 2 despite being kinda "whatever," I do like it's themes on mercenary warfare, civil war, and strife. The theme is there, and is played out very well in some of the cutscenes. It's just too bad the game is overly repetitive. -

Best story ever. Played it 4 times and every time it amazed me even more than the last. -
Sorry if it's been said already...
Mass Effect.
I can't WAIT for ME2! I played through ME at least 5 or 6 times. Very emersive and one of the best looking games I've ever seen. -
It sure does. You should see all the background stuff on all the instances and raid bosses, not to mention items. My friend could go on all day about that kind of stuff.660hpv12 said: ↑it has a story? I'd agree warcraft series has pretty good story, but WoW?!Click to expand...

In my opinion the best story in a game is in Metal Gear series especialy 4.
-
I'm a huge Metal Gear fan, and i must say, 4 is the worst of the series, and by far has the worst story. MG2, MGS, MGS2 that's where the brilliance is.
Best stories in a game ever.
