Beyond Good & Evil finally hit Steam.
This is my favorite game of all time (own it for Xbox and PC), so you should all go buy it.
But even if you don't like it tell me you you loved it. I don't want anything to ruin my rosy tinted hindsight.
For crying out loud at least watch the trailer!

It is going for 9 dollars right now. It is worth at least 10 times that.
I'll be giving away a couple free copies on Steam at some point! I just need to think of some way to make it a viable contest. Anyone have suggestions??
DEAR GOD GO BUY IT!
--------------------------
PROBLEM: FLICKERING TEXTURES AND SHIFTY EYES!?!?!
FIX: Ok The Forerunner. Here is what you need to do to make it all better (believe me, it looks WAY WAY better without all the artifacting).
Go into your Steam > steamapps > common > beyond good and evil > SettingsApplication.exe
On the tab you start out in "Graphics Settings", you can mess with your resolution, I have mine at 1440x900. Jump to the "Advanced Settings" tab and you can jack up water detail, antialiasing, flare, and shadows quality as high as you want. I had to lower antialiasing just a bit to keep my FPS up.
Now on the right click on the "manual compatibility" checkbox. Everything except W Buffer should be checkmarked. Now, all you need to do is uncheck "HW Vertex Processing".
HW Vertex Processing is the option I found that causes all of the artifacting and shifty eyes.
DESYNCHED AUDIO? Try lowering/disabling your AA!
Also try: I found another way to improve synch problems. Set the game's processor affinity to only 1 core. This requires an alt tab during the game. Open up task manager (cntrl + alt + del) and select BG&Es process, and right click to set the processor affinity. Use the checkboxes to set only one core.
This may not help everyone, but it has worked in the past.
--------------------------------
EDIT: If you would like to change the video/audio settings after starting the game the first time, go to Steam >>> steamapps >>> common >>> beyond good and evil >>> SettingsApplication to change it again.
EDIT: GEEZ It's like Ubisoft just vomited half their library onto Steam!
EDIT: *sobs with joy*
Cool fact, part of the soundtrack for BG&E was used in the FarCry 2 Trailer. The musical score for this game is fantastic.

Ha! I didn't see the steam part, and I jumped to the conclusion that this was a religious thread.

Yes, I am a BG&E Zealot. -
I'm an Epic Megagames fanatic. Jazz Jackrabbit FTW.

I got it for free in Joystick( french computer magazine), awesome game. I need to finish it tho =/. Btw why isn't there any free games in us video games mags? Even the french version of PC Gamer has them....
-
Ubisoft is a French company, I would expect them to treat France with a little extra fondness.
Oh yes, finish the game, the musical score gets even better and the storyline ramps into crazy territory.
We need a sequel. -
Wasn't this originally supposed to be a trilogy?
-
Nice, BG&E is probably one of my favourite games as well. Very high production values, very not finished story! When will they get on with a sequel already.
-
That is why I want everyone to get it on Steam, to promote the continuation of the series. -
Yeah, that's what I thought. It is unfortunate.
-
I just bought it because I heard good things about it, even when it was released, and then forgot about it. Glad it came to Steam to remind me!
-
Unrelated...but, I'd love to see them finish the trilogy of Advent Rising with Orson Scott Card....another great gem.
-
Yeah, it's a great game. I played it on the Xbox. One of my most favorite games in the past 10 years as well.
While your at it... go buy Psychonauts!
And did you not think their text input method was the best in any game ever made? I could type in words SO FAST with that weird spiral keypad thingie. -
I bought this game when it first came out, excellent game.
-
saturnotaku Notebook Nobel Laureate
BG&E has been on my "meaning to play" list since it was released. Glad to see it on Steam, and for $9 the purchase was a no-brainer.

The Forerunner Notebook Virtuoso
I remember this game when it came out but never played it. Due to Storm's fervorous support of it I bought it. Better be good (I remember reviews being positive).
-
I have it for the gamecube, never finish it tho maybe I should fire it up again...
-
I love this game, one of my favorites. Played it on gamecube and was surprised what the game turned out to be like, was different (and awesome) than I was expecting. Been meaning to buy it, so this seems like the perfect chance!
-
-
If it's really as good as people say, if sales take off maybe there'll be an awesome sequel.
-
It looks like a combination between Legacy of Kain and MDK2 .
I can`t believe I haven`t played this game yet! -
The Forerunner Notebook Virtuoso
Do you guys get artifacting? Theres all sorts of weird stuff going on in this game.
-
I'll be doing extensive testing/troubleshooting for people on Thursday when I can get the game going. I have been using the old CD installed version for a long time now, but I might need to help you guys get through getting it to work.
There used to be an issue where water effects would cause FPS drops for anyone using a 6 or 7 series Nvidia.
My only advice is to try 169.25, which is the latest 8 series stable driver. I really feel bad recommending that for one game though, as I have been using 174.74 and some of the performance enhancements are quite nice.
I'll have to shoot myself if our unofficial game reviewer can't play BG&E because it is too bugged out!
EDIT: Scratch that. Screw the fact that I'm at an airport, I'm going to try jacking in my external hard drive anyway and see if I can't get it working for you. Expect me to take a bit longer, as I need to find double outlets open. -
Thund3rball I dont know, I'm guessing
$9... never played it... will purchase tonight. Thanks for pointing this out.
-
Holy crap Forerunner! It's a good thing I'm testing this (even in the airport), I'm getting massive artifacting and flashing textures on my Steam version. Let me try some settings/different drivers and I'll report back!
I'm SO SORRY for not catching this sooner! -
The Forerunner Notebook Virtuoso
Lol. Yeah. There are eyes are flying out of their head and all sorts of hell. I still love the game, been playing it for a few hours. It would be alot more enjoyable without all the distracting artifacting. I googled it and others had the same problem but with no real solution. Someone suggested trying old drivers. How old is the question?
Airport? Vacation, WOOT! Where ya headed?
+ rep for the recommednation though. -
Anyway, I haven't narrowed it down, but disabling all of the manual compatibility options in the game's SettingsApplication.exe (it is in the game's steam subfolder) got rid of pretty much all the problems. I'll narrow it down to whatever option is actually causing the problem, but if you want then for now you could theoretically go into the settings file in the advanced tab and going manual compatibility and disabling everything.
I'll be back with more, I'm so sorry, the artifacting must be terribly annoying! -
Ok The Forerunner.

HW Vertex Processing is the option I found that causes all of the artifacting and shifty eyes.
I have done this with 169.25, I know you are using a more advanced driver, so tell me if this works for you!
After you are done, press the save button and then play!
EDIT: Oh, and humor me by watching the into cinematic again, it has always been my favorite part, and it really makes a better impression without HW Vertex Processing active.
*smashes head against wall* gahh I can't believe you are still willing to play it! Thanks for the understanding. -
The Forerunner Notebook Virtuoso
Lol yeah. It was pretty bad. Especially chasing those damn bandits, whenver I would pick up crystals I couldn't see where I was going.
Your a genius. Picture is clear as day. I would rep yo u again if I could. I just got my mission and bought some stuff from ming. THis game is captivating. Thanks again storm! -
Does anybody have laggy cinematics with a unsynched sound? This is the first time I try reinstalling the game since my mobility x700 laptop bit the dust....
-
I disabled HW Vertex Processing and that fixed the worst of the desyncing and this horrible flickering problem I had. Again, directions are above.
-
omg!
This is the best gaming news this year!
BG&E is one of the most amazing games I've ever played. Partly because it's so complete, with no real weak points (other than a few bugs).
The graphics, sound, music, story, even voice acting are all top notch (of course technically the graphics are starting to look a bit dated, but even that isn't *too* bad. And artistically, it just works. Oh, and did I mention the humor? It's funny as well.
(Double H is hilarious)
And the gameplay is so much more varied than you expect. Every time you think you've seen what the game has to offer, it throws some new gameplay at you.
I'm seriously considering buying it again, just to promote a sequel
I really really really hope this Steam thing can convince Ubi to make a sequel.
Everyone go buy it.
That issue is annoying as hell
Post here if you figure out a fix.
Oh, and... PROPAGANDA! Du du duuu du *hums along* -
AA is very tough in this game, I wouldn't recommend setting it above 1/2. Besides, 1/2 is more than enough to smooth out all the rough edges on my system (running 1440x900). As for the desync, I would venture to guess that AA might be causing it, but the worst trouble Forerunner and I were having with the Steam version was flickering textures. It was really bad, at one point Jade's eyes were floating next to her head. But yeah, going into the settingsapplication.exe and disabling HW Vertex Processing did the trick for both of us. It also roughly fixed the desynced audio, but I suspect your suggestion about lowering AA might help even more.
Much love to the BG&E crowd!
Buy it on Steam, support the sequel! $8.99 for an amazing game! -
About the desynch issue, it wasn't directly related to performance. I've seen it on computers that ran the game perfectly smooth. So it's not just a matter of lowering detail level, unfortunately. That'd make it so much easier to fix.
-
Anyway, I am holding some sort of contest with the prize being a Steam copy of Beyond Good and Evil (using the Gift system).
I think I have enough for two copies. So anyone have any good ideas for a contest? I'll give you one for free Jalf, forerunner already bought his, so I can't give him one. -
I've already got the game, so no need
(except to promote a sequel, of course
By the way, found this on youtube:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=zc8a8o7oGa0
I love the music in this game :9
edit:
Uuhhh,, what?
I was trying to buy it on Steam to gift to a friend, but it says it's not available in my country... Anyone else got that? Know which countries it's unavailable in? -
-
I've hosted the Nintendo released (free, legal) soundtrack for Beyond Good & Evil for about 5 years now. It's at www.stormeffect.com if you want it. There is also an unreleased song I absolutely love called "Final Boss", it's all on my site.
As for the region locking, I don't get it. Ubisoft is a French company, they should have all their games available to all of Europe, I can't think of a single reason why they wouldn't do it that way. Plus, BG&E is localized in many different languages, each time I start the game I can choose from at least 5! We'll get it figured out, either way. -
Already got the soundtrack. And yes, it's awesome
-
Why don't they make games like this anymore?
BIG EDIT: I found another way to improve synch problems.
Well, just to complicate matters, when I played it I noticed that if I alt-tabbed out, the game would crash with a bluescreen much later. Like, you alt-tab, you play for half an hour, and it bluescreens.
You don't alt-tab, and it never crashes. Perhaps that was just on my system, but still, something to keep an eye on. If you get weird crashes, that might be why. And because it happens so much later, it's not exactly obvious that the alt-tabbing caused it. -
cool, I want a free copy ^^
I had it for PS2 a while back, couldn't really get into it so I sold it. But people keep saying it's all great so I've been sorta wanting to play through it -
The Forerunner Notebook Virtuoso
Haha this game is great. Most of these type of platformer type adventure games reach a peak somwhere in the middle and become moring. This has a nice steady line of difficulty and always keeps me guessing about whats next. Maybe I should do a review?
