Seconding Fallout 3, awesome game. Rather big open world and you can just roam freely when not feeling like doing quests. Several possible endings as well so you can play it several times with different style (good, evil, neutral / ranged, melee). Make sure to get datadisks. First one, Operation Anchorage, is short and not linked with main storyline of F3, but has nice loot which you can use (the stealth suit is pure win for melee/sniper character). Second, The PITT, was a bit weaker in my opinion and also not connected with main storyline. Third, The Broken Steel, is definitely worth getting just for the fact that it raises level cap, gives some new cool weapons and continues the story of original Fallout 3.

If you want something Bioshock-ish I suggest Dead Space. Fallout 3 is also a good choice but much, much bigger.

[Prototype] for sure, good story + fun gameplay

Fallout3, story is kinda weak, but still one of my favorite games.

Eh...it gives me the same feeling WoW did. Go to this town, grab this quest, go kill these guys, come back, get money. Is it fun? Yes. It it innovative? No. Not to mention all the weapons are pretty crappy. The only 2 I've found worth using are the combat shotgun and the chinese assault rifle.
