Hi everyone, I have a toshiba L670-105 equipped with a AMD Radeon HD5650 Mobility Underclocked :( 450/800 instead of 600/800.. I'm wondering if it's risky to mod the vbios and replace the "underclocked clocks" to those used by DELL or Acer and how can I do it.
    thanks for you future help.
(sorry for my english i'm from tunisia)

    Hello there!

Have you tried to overclock? No need to mod the VBIOS, because, if done wrong, crap will happen :)
Can you tell me your temperatures? Idle & under load.

always overclock with AMD gpu tool is making me mad..that's why i'm thinking about modding the vbios...plus AMD said the normal frequencies are 450---600 for the core...while Dell acer and the others are selling their PC's with 550/800 toshiba guys prefer to give me 450 !!
    anyway @ 600/800 i have 72° while playing Crysis Warhead ;)

Well you would not want to use any real bios data from dell or acer, that would be a bad idea.

You can do it with GPU-Z, there is a button next to the bios version that enables you to save the VBIOS to a file.
Then you can use nibitor to edit the BIOS and make the overclock permanent after reflashing to your card.
but try step 1 first ;)

I've never had the BIOS "read" function work on a laptop, not with GPU-Z, NiBiTor, or RBE. It's because the vast majority of vBIOSes in laptops are packaged in the system BIOS. You might be able to read from a true dedicated MXM card, but not with your 5650.

What you would need is a tool to unpack your BIOS. They can be found over at BIOS Mods

I've been pretty successful over on the Dell board doing BIOS overclocks for people, but I'm only familiar with the Phoenix/Insyde tool. If you could tell me what brand BIOS you have (Phoenix / Insyde / AMI / Award) I could help you out better.

There's some more info on how to do it over here, from page 9 to page 12 or so http://forum.notebookreview.com/gam...-cards/487795-how-overclock-ati-5650-a-9.html

When turning on the PC, Esc -> Enter Setup. On the top, there will be the version and name of the BIOS.

It will tell you during boot what button to press to enter setup. It's usually F2, Del, or Esc.

Guys, it is not possible. We're at a point where Toshiba locks out their BIOS. They did the same with my Qosmio, and we tried to get this to work with my good friend Dude55 over P.M.s but it is not possible. Atleast we were not able to get it to work. If you been in on programming for years, you can give it a try. But I do not think it is really worth it. End of the story.

By the way, Toshiba laptops based on Intel MB's use Phoenix ;) Mostly.

I went ahead and downloaded the BIOS. It ended up being an Insyde EFI BIOS. The Phoenix tool I usually use was able to unpack it. Everything looked a little different, but once I found where the vBIOS was stored, it was no different from any other BIOS mod I've done. I was able to change the "neutered" 5650 clocks of 450/800/0.95v to the "real" 5650 clocks of 550/800/1.0v. However, I don't have that laptop, so I am not able to test it out before I give it to you. I have no idea whether or not Toshiba has some sort of mechanism in place that would somehow prevent you from flashing with this BIOS. The modded BIOS is attached below.

    L670-105_BIOS200_mod.zip

WARNING: FLASHING THIS BIOS IS AT YOUR OWN RISK. I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE IF THIS MOD BRICKS YOUR LAPTOP. MAKE SURE THAT YOU READ UP ON BIOS CRISIS RECOVERY, OR "BLIND FLASHING", BEFORE/IF YOU FLASH THIS, IN CASE SOMETHING DOES GO WRONG.

Hmm, they have done something diffrent then? However, it is also about 3-4 therads about the 9800M GTX overclocking in a Qosmio... It did not seems to be possible at all. I've also have a few BIOS's that I need to remove whitelist, and if possible some voltage editing. Guys over at BIOS-Modders were not able to do anything with it, you want to give it a shot? :D

I think the problem with the Qosmio thing is that they were trying to add a different MXM card in that wasn't supported, and they needed to ADD a vBIOS. All I did was find the 5650 vBIOS that was already there, and change a few hexadecimal pairs, which is about the extent of my skills :) .

Nice one, let's hope it works out for seeker. But however the laptop I'm talking about now is not a Toshiba, but it still it is not possible to directly read the vBIOS :/

In that case, as long as it's a Phoenix or Insyde BIOS it shouldn't be a problem.

Well you could remove the EEPROM, flash it manually and resolder it to the board (if the modded BIOS killed your machine).

seeker_moc, were you able to do that by comparing hex with a normal 5650 vbios?
I tried to do that with a vbios that isn't supported by nibitor, and it didn't work at all...

I tried to edit it using RBE, it opened just fine, but wouldn't let me save, kept giving me an error about the sub-vendor ID not being valid, even though I didn't modify it. But then I just used a hex editor and modded it myself. In the "How to overclock the 5650" thread, Nando4 gave me a link to a mydigitallife forums thread Tool to Insert/Replace SLIC in Phoenix / Insyde / Dell / EFI BIOSes where somebody left a guide on how to modify AMD vBIOSes with a hex editor. RBE is easier, but I've done the manual hex edit before, and it worked without issue.
