hey everyone it's good to be back to this amazing forum, i don't know, maybe it's just me but does anyone else here think that bioshock might actually be a little bit overrated(and one of the most overrated games ever if you ask me), i mean i just finished the game and i feel disappointed, betrayed i don't know you name it! but i can tell you it's defenitely not worth the money spent on it...
it's not that the game isn't good or anything, it's got some amazing graphics( though by no means the best looking game out there) and the sound aspects really are exellent too, and the level-design is simply fantastic, but that's about it, the gamepaly is poor, and uninspired, nothing here is new really and it lacks challenge, the weapons look rediculous and pack unsatisfying sound, and speaking of variety, it's simply non-existent in this game, you run down the same type of enviroments taking on the same types of enemies( different types of splicers, security bots and those overrated big daddies, and that's about it) using the same weapons and the same stratigies, how cool's that?
i can't believe there're guys out there already comparing it to HL2!! it's not even close! all the big daddies at once in this game can't even match taking on a gunship or a helicopter from HL2!!
buttomline is, this game've been a huge disappointment for me, and halv the way through the game i was thinking about uninstalling it because i got so bored and felt that i was wasting my time, but couldn't bring myself to do it especially after reading all those positive reviews out there, and by the time i was done with it i didn't really feel like i've seen too much, and it simply felt unfinished, i really regret buying it...

Its pretty good, its far more deserving of the high ratings than last years favourite shooter FEAR, FEAR was mediocre at best. Bioshock is pretty good as i say... But yeah a bit overrated, there should have been some variety in monsters. Nothing compared with HL2, HL2 was a fantastic game that had everything, big outdoor areas, indoor areas, interesting enemies (useful ones sometimes) gripping storyline, good graphics that dont take a supercomputer to run. Half life 2 will not be topped until half life 3 comes along.
***SPOILER***
EDIT: Thinking back on it, i think that maybe these few things would have made bioshock a bit better:
1. A trip outside rapture underwater somewhere? That would have been interesting.
2. Becoming a big daddy should have been more fun, as it is your just noisier and have a more limited vision, where the hells my rivet gun?
3. This may not be justified as i have only played the good ending, but i would like to have known what happened to rapture afterwards, what happened to all the remaining big daddies and splicers??
4. Some more bosses other than the big daddys or beefed up splicers, maybe some failed genetic experiments with a sea creature? Or people? Think resident evil style. They could even have set it up by having a room filled with 3 big daddies, all dead with large lacerations on their corpses, blood and guts everywhere, making you think "aw hell, what the f**k did this!?, i hope i don't bump into it anytime soon"
5. A mini sub! Yes! No game is complete without a vehicle, a fun vehicle like a mini sub! Maybe a passing german submarine plans to threaten rapture and you must go sink it or something as a sub plot during the game, i dunno, it would be fun to do. -
Your one of the few who didn't like it then I guess cause my feelings after playing Bioshock were the complete opposite. I thought the way you were able to interact with the environment to kill bad guys was very innovative and fun at most times. The only way I could see it getting boring is if you just used a certain plasmid / rocket launcher the entire game, making it too easy + boring. Its really up to the player to discover everything and I found it to be fun instead of taxing , which made the uniqueness of game one of the best ever seen IMHO. The only way I was in anyway disappointed was that this game carried too much over from System Shock 2 and didn't add new material/ideas. Other than that it was deserving of the reviews it got and should be a shoe-in for. game of the year.

Maby you just expected too much from it. That's what all that hype and positive reviews sometimes causes. Same propably also goes for movies. I haven't played Bioshock yet, but propably will, someday when I have more time. But I haven't closely followed it's hype or reviews and now that I have red your thoughts, maby I will be positively surprised.

I would put Bioshock in my top 10 FPS games, but probably not my top 10 games overall.
To me the game was great in that it kept me involved, kept pushing to advance, and had a freakishly weird story. It wasn't all that hard, but I don't mind that. I abhor the opposite, where I can't finish a game because my skills just can never pass section X or I have to run through the same 20 minute segment before dying again.
Bioshock is a solid FPS, stable, and has everything that should be in an FPS. I put HL2 a notch above this one, in either case, because HL2 did have more variety, and a little more originality.
I really like the idea of having different plasmids, the Big Daddy creatures / little girl relationship, and ways to affect the environment / gameplay. I agree there should have been a little bit more variety. But between the plasmids, weapons, and taking photos, the game could be played and completed in a myriad of ways. I like that the most. Yes it's linear, but there's more than one way to skin that Big Daddy.
I would give Bioshock a solid 90%. -

thought it was great. Best FPS out there. Much deeper and more involved and better storyline than HL2 (which is waaaayy overrated)
Thought the models and overall graphics were excellent. Neat touches like showing upgrades to weapons actually on the model and such.
Sound is on a class of its own as well imo....the distinctive moan of the big daddy nearby and the screen shaking as he walks. Havent seen or played another FPS which comes close to this.
Also thought that a lot of the fun in the game was in finding new ways of killing enemies which the varied plasmids + weapons combined with the interactive environment made a lot of fun. Setting traps for the big daddies etc
Which other fps gives you this much variety? certainly not HL2 imo -
This is what it should have been:
Presentation: 10.0
Graphics: 9.5
Sound: 9.5
Gameplay: 9.0
Lasting Appeal: 7.0
Overall: 92% -
I agree about the 'lasting appeal' as well. It is a great game with limited replayability. I will consider playing it again probably in another year, like I did with Half-Life 2.
I consider myself an average skill FPS gamer, and it took me probably a little over 20 hours to complete. I don't know how people finish it in less than 15 and then say it wasn't any good. That's kind of like running through a haunted house and saying it wasn't very scary. It's all about atmosphere, which Bioshock captured well.
I do see potential for a couple expansions. It'd be fun to have multiplayer as well. That'd be quite a bit of fun to use those plasmids against one another. Not to mention the trap bolts. -
Lol. I think I will get it anyway. I hate Securom and activation though. I read on their official forums that people with legal copies are getting cracks in order to avoid securom. Shame.
Well nothing is perfect.

Game experience is subjective. Yes, most of the reviews say Bioshock is good, excellent, etc. The reviews are a reflection of what a majority of people think about a game. Many of the people here in the forum say it's good. So unfortunately, we'll be disregarding your take on Bioshock.
You shouldn't have made a new thread about Bioshock being so bad (albeit the fact that everyone else thinks otherwise). You should post your rant in a gamer forum or in our official Bioshock thread: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=159657 -
The Forerunner Notebook Virtuoso
^ Oh darn I was just about to create a "Bioshock is ok" thread.

I know. But many don't. And 5 installs came after community pressed 2K to do it! I appreciate their good will.

I would like to see for myself how Bioshock is, regardless if it is overrated or not. After watching gameplay videos and seeing the many different ways you can handle the different situations and environmetns, I was really juiced to buy this game and play it. But, unfortunately, the only computer I would be able to play it on, laptop in my sig, fails at the requirements Bioshock needs
. Oh well.

i was going to purchase this for the pc, but after playing it for a few hours last night on my friends 360 i got incredibly bored? i dont know if it was just because i was playing it on the xbox but it was just too linear (not that it's a bad thing with a story such as this), but i guess im more of a "reality" fps (i.e. without the plasmids and stuff)... the fact that theres no multiplayer or anything limits the replayability and i honestly can't see myself buying this game for the pc now... it would be like watching a movie over again.. although the game is fun and looks awesome i think im going to pass on this because of the replay factor, i just know once i beat it i won't pick the game back up for who knows how long, there just wouldn't be a point in playing through the story again when you know what is going the happen when the main reason of the game is the suspense, horror, and surprises..
great game, but not for me.. i'll go back to the battlefieldP

Well, since I hear it requires internet access for activation, I guess I can't get it (I'm deployed with no internet available on my personal laptop).
I don't think the companies think about that possibility. I don't even know why they both with copy protection any more since it's always cracked in 8 hours by the hackers, anyway.
Bioshock!! a huge disappointment
