A rather unfortunate update for those of us who have been following the Black Mesa mod for the Source engine.
For those who don't know, Black Mesa is a complete reconstruction of the original Half-Life in the Source engine, with custom models, textures, voices...everything is being built from the ground up. This project has been going on since 2004. Late in 2008, the development team released an official trailer claiming a 2009 release date. Now, in the final days of 2009, they've announced that they will not be able to make this deadline. So...2010? Who knows.![]()

Black mesa forever

not suprised. a little disappointing. but its free so i cant complain i suppose.

It doesn't surprise me or that they would pull out completely - compared to HL1, modding for Source has generally resulted in failure by most who have tried. Even halfway-decent mods such as Eternal Silence or Empires, or Insects Infestation have inexplicably failed and my heart is crushed to see so much work gone to waste.
-
They're still working on it, they just weren't able to make their projected 2009 deadline. And there are plenty of awesome Source mods. Ever heard of Garry's Mod? Zombie Panic: Source (I don't really like this one, but it sure is popular)? Pirates Vikings and Knights II? Age of Chivalry? Insurgency?
-
So was Insects Infestation, by content alone there are plenty of "awesome" mods, but they all fail in either execution or to gather a following. Garry's Mod stopped being a "mod" when it licensed the engine, the others you mention all have servers in the range of maybe 1 to 15 on average, except for the last which is probably the most notable Source mod to date and yet with only a fraction of the success HL1 mods such as CS, DoD, TFC, or even NS had. There's just something about Source modding - the magic is lost.
edit: actually it appears Gmod doesn't license its own copy of the engine, nevertheless it's not within the true spirit of a "free" mod. -
I think modding in general is just not where it used to be. Game engines have gotten more and more advanced and complicated over the years. Back in the day of Halo: Combat Evolved for PC and Halo Custom Edition, the modding scene was huge. When Halo 2 came about on PC, hardly anyone did anything with it.
Same thing with Call of Duty...the original game, UO and CoD2 had mods galore...CoD4 and World at War, not so much, and of course there are no mods for MW2. Medal of Honor as well...Allied Assault and its expansions were modded to hell and back, but there's pretty much nothing for Pacific Assault and Airborne.
I could go on and on. -
Ya, definitely not surprised, they were suspiciously quiet as the deadline grew closer and didn't really show any signs of being actually done.
-
That sucks. Maybe Valve will give them a hand, or just buy it off them and release it as an official mod. TBH I'd rather pay $20 for the mod and see the developers get paid and get it done, than leave it hung out to dry.
I never finished the original Half-Life. It's weird, I would frequently get headaches and nausea when playing. Most FPS don't do that to me, but the original one did. Half-Life 2 didn't give me any issues, so hopefully this won't either. -
I honestly wouldn't be upset if they did that...hell, I'd pay $20 for this. It would beat the hell out of Valve's own Half-Life: Source anyway.

sigh.... depressing news....
thank you OP for ruining my day... -
Hopefully this means the end product will be better than if it was released now.

I really did want to play it, I liked the original more than HL2.
Too bad I never played HL opposing force.
I hope they make a source mod of that -
