Hi folks,
A while ago I installed the World of Warcraft trial to experiment with the game everyone seems to play nowadays. Unfortunately, it had some weird error when launching so after creating the account I never got to play it.
Nevertheless, since that happened I have received at least one mail per day saying that my account has been hacked, etc, that are fake mails.
Considering that:
- these mails started very shortly after I installed the trial -- I checked the installation date and the frequency of the mails
- I used a different password for WoW than for everything else, in particular the WoW password is different from the email password
- I never even logged on any server
I can only conclude that my personal information was leaked from Blizzard itself.
What do you all think?

While I am far from a blizzard fanboi, I think it is far more likely your own computer is the leak.
Check for trojans/malware if for no other reason to make sure your own yard is clean before you go scrutinizing everyone else's.
Did you get this trial software directly from blizzard? -
This is by FAR more likely. Many wow users have succumbed to trojans/key loggers, etc, and have had their accounts hacked as an result.
-
i think this has been an on going issue with blizzard for some time
-
I should have mentioned in the first post. I scanned my computer with four different anti-malware products once I started getting these mails, and they found nothing. I also don't use pirated software and don't open emails with attachments named HOTNAKEDGIRL.exe.
That alone doesn't mean I'm home free, though. -
i doubt it's malware. my friends have been complaining about those emails for some time, and they have certain computers that don't do anything except play WoW or watch youtube videos.

i have had my account for well over a year and have had NO emails, sure i get the stupid in game messages from "Blizzard" but thats it - i dont see it being a problem with Blizzard/wow
-
Do they visit forums, do they buy gold, etc. There are far too many ways to have your account info leaked.
I've had a WoW account for 4 years without any issues/emails. -
Heh I'm getting WoW mail from fake blizzard which I tend to ignore. They just say my account is in danger of being deleted due to inactivity and stuff and requires me to relogin to "refresh" it or something
Meh it's not that frequent and started like 2 months ago so I doubt it's actually a leak at Blizzard but more of the website you registered/visited. Perhaps a WoW fan forum or something?
-
Same. I have 1 EU account (owned it for ~5 years or so now) and 2 US accounts, and I never ever got any fishing e-mail.
-
Any email attachment with the word .exe after the filename is a no go, even with a sweet name as HOTNAKEDGIRL.
And i just asked my brother, who playes EU WoW and he told me that he has not recieved any suspect emails from Blizzard "yet". hehe -

Yeah, also helps if you dont use Gold Sellers, level trainers and such as well - i know someone that did that and they had there account hacked there computer hacked and everything -
This. The email that is/(was) tied to blizzard never received anything but my cancellation confirmation, but the email that is tied to EJ (a fansite) gets its' spambox bombarded regularly with phishing and scams.
-
they most likely do; i'm not really sure. though i'd still disregard it as a direct infection on your local machine.
-
all mmorpg's suffer from this problem. It's a shame that some ignorant kids get by on a game by stealing from others.
-
That's a good point. I don't think Blizzard leaks your data, it doesn't make much sense for them to do something like that. In fact, they are pretty good at restoring whatever was taken - I know as my friend's account got hacked recently as he logged in from the computer his horny mate at work used to download "swedish action" movies from... google by clicking on all the ads.
-
The fact that it started right after you installed is suspect. How did Blizzard leak it so fast?
Its likely a client somewhere either on your computer or perhaps a listening/parsing/harvesting computer in your network or perhaps even outside.
Your computer might be completely clean, but your wife/gf/roomie's computer is running a trojan and gathered the info from transmitions within your network. If you have a wireless network, NOTHING is safe as the words "wireless" and "security" do not belong in the same sentence. -
I never posted on a forum or website about WoW, nor have I registered at a WoW-related website. I think.
I do use only 4 or 5 passwords for the multiple websites I visit, so it might be that they got the password from there (don't worry -- the really important passwords are all different and are only used in one place). -
Best bet is to keep a separate gaming email for all your various accounts with a separate password then the one you would use to register for forums and other stuff.
-
It is common spam. Just a coincidence more than likely.
-
Wow, I was banned for the advice I posted above (now deleted). I didn't think I was saying anything out of the oridinary. That's the last time I try to help someone on nbr.
I do hope you find the source of your problem. -
