Thanks for the response. Can anyone else corroborate?

If I buy it from Direct2Drive and then add it to my Steam account, will I ever need to use the Direct2Drive software again?

Yeah, it seems like Bearclaw is the only one weighing in, though. Not that I don't believe he had a bad experience. I'm just wondering whether anyone else has used Direct2Drive. I'm mostly worried about installing yet another game download service and that Comrade seems not to allow offline play (according to the NotebookReview review).

You add it to Steam as a SHORTCUT.

No different than adding Minesweeper to Steam. It only gives you access to the in-game overlay.

You still have to download any patches, updates through Direct2Drive as it does not get added to your Steam account. Steam will have nothing to do with it.

than why is my HL GOTY verision stuck to steam now? I added my HL, opposing force, and blue shift, which were bought retailed at like beest buy and toys r us. Why have i been able to d/l the game from steam and get auto updates for the last 6 years? i don't even know where my CD's for those games are anymore. I entered the CD keys for it and it said those games were forever binded to that steam account.

because half life is made by valve, who is the creator of steam. only a few games can be forever attached to steam including all of valves games, black ops, and a few others...

Because these are Valve games that are allowed to be added to your Steam account. What He's talking about only adds a shortcut so you can use the overlay.

I've purchased a few games from Direct2Drive (D2D). You don't need the Comrade software at all. In D2D you download the installer, unzip it, and then install manually (its like buying a retail game... but just digitally).
