I play it sometimes when I head downtown, lots of Chess Board tables for people to play :)

I usually lose in a dozen moves ;)

There is Chessmaster 10000. It's great. My friend, who loves playing chess, has it and is thrilled with it, especially it's huge databases and extensive tutorials. I think it's the last one released so far.

Check out some of the amazon reviews of Chessmaster 10000, a lot of folks seem to have a problem with it.

Either Fritz 8 or shredder 9. If you are more of a beginner chessmaster X might be a better choice. It seems like a solid program except the onlin efeature does not work too good!

It's not called Chessmaster 10000, it's called Chessmaster 10th Edition, and it's a very good chess game with excellent tutorials and plenty of unlockable content.
I only went through half of the tutorial once and managed to become my High school's chess champion, while I was beaten in the second round the previous year.

Deep Fritz 8 beats the crap out of anything out there. A good free program (prolly the strongest free program out there) however would be Crafty + Winboard

Yeah, fritz is good, as well as shredder. Head to chessbase.com to see their collection of engines and training cds.

I have played both Fritz 8 and Chessmaster something. Fritz is the better program for advanced players who wish to analyze games, play online, and learn. The version of Chessmaster I played had some very instructional lectures by IM Josh Waitzkin in addition to other tutorial material like John Nunn's puzzles.

Fritz is good for advanced players or players wishing to improve.
Chessbase is good for casual players.
