Well, I finally made the plunge and bought my first laptop. It is the following:

    Dell 1520

Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium Edition
    Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T7500 (2.2GHz/800Mhz FSB/4MB cache)
High Resolution, glossy widescreen 15.4 inch display (1680x1050)
    256MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 8600M GT
Speed: 120GB SATA Hard Drive (7200RPM)
CD / DVD writer (DVD+/-RW Drive)
Integrated Sound Blaster® Audigy™HD Software Edition
    Intel® 3945 802.11a/g Mini-card
85Whr Lithium Ion Battery (9 cell)

Currently we have a family desktop from ABS that was running the Athlon 64 3400+, 1 gig of ram, 160 gig hard drive and a Radeon 9800 Pro.....oh yeah and Windows XP Professional

So do you think there will be a decent jump in gaming performance between the two?

WOW! I used to have almost the exact same spec'd out ABS-pc desktop as you did, except mine was a Radeon 9700 Pro

Graphics wise, in terms of gaming benchmark programs, you should see at least 2 times, or maybe even 3 times better graphics...

You will easily blow that desktop away :)

Now the problem will be if you're able to sit around and wait for it to ship!

Have fun with your new notebook. I know I'll be excited with mine because I'm switching from a P4 with an obsolete integrated 82845G - so anything like core duo or nVidia gets me hyped about anything. :D

You are going to be FLOORED by the increase in gaming capability. The Radeon 9800 was certainly a classic, but the 8600m GT will increase performance at least 200% (if you decide to run at native res, higher if you run it lower). I haven't even mentioned that switching to a dual core will literally double your processor output.

I can't figure how much ram you got, I hope you got 2gb (it'll enhance your experience somewhat), although 1gb is fine.

I got 2 gigs for it. I know I play a lot of Half-Life 2 and Doom 3 and they take forever to load, and the frame rates aren't always that great so I'm really excited to see how nice I can get these games to look on the laptop. Unlike most people, I usually like to play the last generation of games while everybody else is on something new. You guys have me so excited hahaha.

I for one can tell you that with similar laptop to yours, check my sig, I can run Half-life 2 max setting 1680x1050 with absolute smoothness. The environment is so gorgeous and almost feel like playing a different game. Speaking upgrade from geforce 3 and athlon xp 1600 lol
