I just ran DMC4's performance test with all settings on super high, 1900x1200, no AA, on my new m17x with a 9800M GT, X9000 C2D and 4GB of ram...and I still get a B and the recommendation to upgrade my hardware. Framereates looked really good usually hitting 100+ max and never dropping below 38fps or so. Is this test just a gimmick to get people to buy more hardware or does it offer real performance stress testing?

If the Framerate is looking good then I'd take that test with a grain of salt. ;)

He's also running on WUXGA, and Ultra-high. What settings are you running on?

    @ OP:
Have a look at this post.

    >.> your laptop most likely doesn't even support a 1900x1200 resolution. As for the OP I can't remember if DMC4 supports sli natively, you should try forcing it in nvidia control panel.

The performance tool in DM4 pretty inaccurate imo. I feel like the test just looks at the min FPS and assigns you a grade. I overclocked my 8600m GT enough so the min fps hits exactly 30. My grade change from a D to a C. If I were you, I would just ignore the performance test result, and just enjoy the game.

I wish people would quit posting only their grade, there is a reason the game gives you so much detailed information when the benchmark finishes, take a picture of the end result and then post it.....

If you didnt notice the "grade line" for DMC4 is at 60fps... that means to get a S rank you need to stay above 60fps at all times. Thats unrealistic to need 60fps for optimal play. If you stay in the 30's you should be good to go. DMC4 is not the type of game that requires really high FPS to run smooth. Mostly FPS games are the ones that need that and even still in the mid 40's is butter smooth.

I get a D on my G50V maxed out but it runs good still, my desktop gets an S with like 120fps average :p.

yeah dmc4 runs fine at 30fps. required framerate totally depends on the game.

Since when do reviewers post on a notebook forum complaining about "their new laptop"? His comment was about the m17x not even being offered with the re badged 8800m gtx and unless you can post some proof say a picture of your score in the DMC4 benchmark I don't think you have them.

Yeah, pictures or it's not true. Like bwhxeon said, when do professional critics that get $5k laptops for free, complain about their review model? Is it really one of your friends' or one of your family's m17x, or are you really a critic? Which site do you post reviews for? This is the only critic that I heard about getting a m17x with a 9800M GT, or a m17x review model at all:
    http://blog.laptopmag.com/alienware-m17x-hands-on

Anyway, how did you get it before a site like NotebookReview gets theirs?

NBR has gotten review models that have been used by other reviewers previously, so it's certainly possible.

I remember Kevin or Andrew complaining once. Well, not exactly complaining.

Well, why on hell you do expect more FPS on such resolution? if you need to get an A or higher, its either you lower your res to 16xx X 1xxx or go 1440x900 with 2xAA, the 9800gt is nothing new, its a rebranded 8800GTX, we already saw the 8800GTX's benchmarks on that game, and it got an A with 1600x1080 i think

Too much hype over the 9800M GT. :p I'm also suspicious about him being a reviewer...
