A bit random I toting between Lenovo, Asus and MSI. But I just want to check these brands are good enough to handle gaming in thermals. I've done so much research and have read some horror stories about certain brands.

Starlight5 Yes, I'm a cat. What else is there to say, really?

Sorry, I was looking at the Lenovo Y520 Legion, that had an i5 and 1050ti.
Asus ROG FX502VM i5 and 1060.
NAI GE62 7RE i7 and a 1050ti.Starlight5 likes this. -

Those are different classes of devices with different intentions. The Y520 is a barebones and does a decent job at cooling its components assuming you don't mind the noise. The FX502VM runs warm because it has a focus on lower fan noise and a slimmer profile. If you undervolt and repaste, it runs decently cool as well as being quieter than the Y520. The screen, however, is awful. Any laptop with a TN screen (in 99% of cases) should be avoided. The GE62 has good thermals at at the cost of fan noise and battery life. It has a very small battery because the majority of the back of the machine is taken up by heatpipes.

Thanks... I really appreciate your help and struggling with the right choice. The Lenovo is £900 for the i5 7300hq and the 1050ti. Where as the msi is £1000 more but has the i7 7700hq. You have ruled out the Asus for me, the only reason i considered that was the 1060.

Sorry to throw in the mix MIS GP62 MVR Leopard Pro is an i5 with a 1060. Maybe that would be a sweet spot. I'm having trouble finding battery life and screen info for that.

Avoid the GP/GL series. Also, check out the GL502 - that's the same model as the FX502 but with a high-end IPS screen

The storage is quite low on that can I add another hard drive?
This is the one if your be kind enough to check. https://www.scan.co.uk/products/156...1060-12gb-ddr4-ram-256gb-ssd-dvdrw-windows-10Last edited: Sep 10, 2017 -

Yes. It has a M.2 slot for an SSD and a 2.5" drive bay for a HDD (I know because I have the VT model of that chassis in a 250GB + 1TB config)

Lastly done out of the 3, Lenovo y520, msi ge62 or the Asus? Which would you buy?
I just want to say a big thank you as you have really helped me out. -

I wouldn't consider the Y520 honestly. It's an 800$ machine being compared to two 1100$ machines. It's just no in the same ballpark. As for GE62 vs GL502VM - the GE62 will run cooler but the 1060 is about 40% faster so it's your call whether you want lower thermals or better performance. I've already made that choice a year ago

Asus it is!!!!!

The only thing I would recommend is that you download Intel XTU and undervolt the CPU. That will reduce thermals by several degrees. (It's basically a good thing to do on any modern laptop since Intel CPUs are overvolted by default). As for thermals, keep the CPU under 90*C and the GPU under 86-87*C and you're good.

I presume just undervolt then prime95 to stress test it?

Aida64 CPU + FPU stress test if you ask me. P95 is a torture test.
