As gaming machines, how good are they?
Is it better to split the cash for a netbook and use the rest to buy a desktop? Or at the end of the day, is all they need a little upgrading here and there?

http://www.alienware.com/customize/area-51-m15x-notebook.aspx?SysCode=PC-LT-AREA51M15X-AI1&SubCode=SKU-DEFAULT - I can't figure out why it's so expensive..

Don't use alienware as an example for price...they are the biggest ripoffs in the business.
Take a look on newegg, there's a few better candidates there. -
the alienware part was not an example.

The Laptop "Maker" MSI has many many good budget gaming laptops such as the MSI EX625 with ATI 4670, P7350 2Ghz, and 16" all for $900CAD

Alienware laptops don't feature anything you can't get in a cheaper laptop - except for the NAME, of course. Is the word "Alienware" printed on your laptop worth an extra $500? -
They're actually pretty good if you can find the deals.
I'd take a look at the Asus G51 once they have come out (the Best Buy version will come out tomorrow while the reseller versions will probably come out in mid July)
The Sager NP8662 is also pretty good. It can be found at Sager itself or its resellers. -
