I'm trying to burn AVI Video Files on to blank DVD discs and play them on my DVD player. My new DVD player can play them, but my old one that I got in 2003 doesn't seem to play the AVI files, neither does the playstation 2. Does anyone know why AVI's can't be played on older DVD playres, and what I should convert them into so that they play on my playstation 2. Perhaps a mp4 video file.

I don't think you can force your older DVD player to read .avi files (unless your old player supports VCD/SCVD, then you could burn the .avi files as those file types), but there's ways to force your PS2 to play .avi files. It will require some kind of modchip/disc swapping method/software though. Probably more trouble than it's worth. Why are you even bothering trying to do this if you already have a new DVD player than can play .avi files fine?

Also, a PS2 isn't fast enough to read DiVX/XViD encoded .avi files. So even if you did figure out a way to do it, you would have to re-encode and downsample everything and end up losing a lot of quality. I don't think it's even worth trying.

Well the ps2 is in my room so if I want to watch something from up in my room I need it to be able to play on the ps2. I had a video converter back in the day that would change the format of a video file from AVI to MP4 to WMP to 8 or so other options, and i was wondering which one of those other things could I convert the AVI file to so that it will run on my ps2
