At first I wanted to buy a XPS M1730, then the Alienware m17x, and eventually ended up with my XPS 720 desktop because it was a much better value, will last longer, has much better upgradability, and lets you custom pick the keyboard, mouse, and can use a much bigger monitor. I'm starting to regret not getting a notebook, but I'd probably regret not going with a desktop, especially 2 years from now. I still want a notebook for the novelty and to be able to take my gaming with me. Did anyone ever have this kind of problem?

You solve that problem get getting a big-butt desktop...and a small laptop. XPS 420 + Latitude D430 FTW!

Lol, the Latitude D430 has an integrated video card which sucks for gaming. I could save up $1000 and buy some notebook with a 8600M GT, but that won't even compare to the notebooks I'd want for $2k-$3k.

Just be content that your system dominates any laptop in the gaming arena. Seriously.

Mobile systems are best for people with small living areas who need (or want) to move their systems around very often. In other words, college students and prison inmates.

Games you might play on the move would probably work on the next gen of integrated graphics, games like CS:S or TF2 or Dawn of War.

So it is probably a good idea that you waited, so you could get a decent mobile system with decent battery life while gaming.

That's why I choose to go with a desktop...

Anyways, 15%-20% of my free time I'm away from my desktop so it'd be really nice to be able to have the portability, too.

This is a big deal if you really need to be connected to the net everywhere.

The 'playing on the deck/beach/cafe/etc' thing loses its novelty after the first time, so the only situation I can think of where a mobile system would be nice would be very long vacations, and really that is more for email/net access than gaming when it comes down to it.

If you still want a laptop get an Eee or something. Those are fairly cheap. :)

Or go the other way around. Buy an expensive laptop and an Xbox 360. Those are fairly cheap. :)

I like Lithus' idea. Buying a console is alot cheaper than a desktop.

If was a hard core gamer I would have got a desktop instead of ordering my laptop you made the right choice. I got the Laptop for mobility. I can see that using it on the beach, porch, ect gets old, But seeing as I needed a new computer and plan to go to school in 6 months or so it made sense to get the laptop. If I was to have both a cheap laptop for school and email around the house like an EEE PC and then a good gaming desktop is a great combo.

Even though the D430 ONLY has the GMA 950, its still capable for the simple gaming stuff. Not that I ever have time for it that is...

But yeah, when gaming the desktop is where its at.

I've been on a couple of trips with my laptop now, and even though it's capable of playing games, I seriously haven't played any games on it aside from when I'm sitting at home.

If I really have the urge to game on the go that's what the DS is for.

Funny thing with me is I actually prefer gamin on my mid range laptop than on my 24", quadcore, 8800M GTS desktop. The convenience, mobility trumps everything else as long as I can run everything I want which I'm able to.

Altho in a years time I'd probably be singing a different tune and find myself needing to upgrade the notebook....but I'll worry bout that when the times comes. ;)

Or you could've used the money you used to buy that XPS to build your own PC and saved what was left over for a powerful notebook instead XD

Laptops are sexy and save space, but if you dont take them anywher arent with the investment imo.

I absolutely love my laptop, but I think I would have been better off with a desktop considering how little I have travelled with my laptop (a lot less than I thought I would). Live and learn I guess!=)
