I've posted here before with some questions i've been looking at buying a laptop for a couple months for a trip im taking in a few weeks. Its getting down to the wire now so i really have to break down and get one. Theres 2 im kinda stuck between and i was wondering what you guys thought would be the better choice both are similarly priced (within $50)

    Dell Inspiron 1720
    Intel Core 2 Duo 2200
    120gb hard drive
    3gb ram
    Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT 256mb
    Vista home premium

    Or

    Toshiba Satellite P100/P105
    Intel Core 2 Duo 2000
    200gb hard drive
    2gb ram
    Nvidiea GeForce 7900GS 256mb
    Vista Ultimate

Games i mainly play: WoW Oblivion CS:S CoD4
From what i understand both of those machines should run what i want to run on med/high settings with no problems correct? Which would you guys recommend?

I would recommend the Dell Inspiron 1720. My friend has one and I must say the build quality is very good. Also can be configured with a lot of great extras such as webcam and Bluetooth. I use to have a Toshiba Satellite P100 and it wasn't half bad either, but I still like the 1720 better. The CPU is not as important when it comes to modren gaming and shouldn't have too much affect on your gaming efficiency. The 8600M GT and Go 7900GS should be similar in performance, but with the 8600 you'll be able to run Dx10 games so it's more future proof. Both of those laptops will be able run those games maxed out without any issues (not sure about Oblivion) as even the laptop in my sig can handle CoD4 fairly well all maxed except no AA and shadows off at 1280x800. So both of those machines should do quite better than my cr*ptastic X1600 ever can. Also the 3GB or RAM is a good advantage since both of those laptops are running Vista. I noticed great performance boost upgrading from 2GB to 3GB under Vista.

The only true advantage I see the P100 having is the 200GB HDD. Although you should also look at the RPM of the HDD's on those two laptops as well and not just the capacity.

Oh really i thought the 7900GS was significantly better than the 8600M.. In that case its a fairly easy decision to go for the Inspiron.

    Thanks Cheeseman

The Dell will run Oblivion better, and any other shader intensive games, otherwise the Toshiba will be faster. In this case it's more of a matter of comparing the two based on other factors (heat, weight, durability, etc).
