Just read about this and was quite shocked have enjoyed both tiberian sun and c&c 3 plus many other base building games so am quite a fan. However NO base building in this game seems ridiculous as half the fun and skill is in that part of the game.

What are peoples thoughts on this? Do game developers simply think that all gamers need their action fix immediately and don't have the patience to even build a base and harvest resources. What a load of rubbish and very sad if true

Apparently in its place there is one super unit that builds everything and also units respawn? wth is all I can say lol

This is not C&C anymore and no base building is ridiculous. What next? no tiberium harvesting?

I was interested in this game when I first heard about it but they have slaughtered the C&C name enough already. I will not be buying this one or any other ones they may release. This is a joke!

    Goodbye to them.

Forget this heap of junk, go play Tiberian Sun with the Total war Mod and Firestorm.

In fact, Tiberian Sun and Red Alert 2 along with the hundreds of mods available put all of the other newer ones to shame. I also look forward to the Tiberian Sun rising CNC3 mod.

If that's true, it would really stink.

Base building is my favorite part of the series. :(

They're feeling adventurous if they were to try changing the tried & tested formula of RTS gaming...and I have a feeling it will backfire on them.

Besides, C&C 4's graphics looks like toyland to me. Plus Kane joining up with the GDI? Come on. It's all messed up.

they are trying something new, more RPG'ish with persistent profiles or something. never played C&C wasn't a fan, but this approach seems similar to Dawn of War II which I enjoyed for a short while haha

As someone who preordered it and tried the beta that comes with I can say it's as bad as what's discussed here.

Graphics are as dumbed down as the gameplay, which seems at the minute just to be based around achieveing mini-game style objectives rather than what we're used to.

The engineers are OP'd, healing units annoyingly fast.

Sure things are locked since it's a beta, but the majority of things are locked because you have to rank up to unlock them! forcing you to go down the matchmaking route or else you'll get pwnd by someone who actually has a super weapon.

But command points? come on... And the ability to pick up your MCV and have it change to an attack mode is just suicide. (really, it was when I tried it)

I was expecting C&C 4 to be a greater extention of C&C 3 with better weaponry, technology and super weapons :(

Cancelled my preorder, though they haven't gotten back to me yet like they promptly have done before...

Resource collection and base building is pretty much a prerequisite. If there's neither, then it's not an RTS, it's an action game. WiC is a good example. It's fun, but I still don't consider it RTS. A large part of the strategy is usually managing your resources and having to scrum for additional ones once your base is depleted.

on the bright side, it will keep RA3 popular longer, and RA3 is:

    1. a great C&C game

    2. fun to play and doesn't take itself too seriously

    3. cheap

*AND* the community isn't too split because they didn't make a multiplayer expansion pack.

It'll allow me to just keep playing RA3, and I have no problem with that.

To me, Age of Empires II is one of the best RTS games ever. Resource's were very important because without doing collecting them your empire would fall. This meant creating villagers to collect each of the 4 resources and building lumber yards, mining camps & mills.

Sure, but where is Dune 4? I'm not playing the original command and conquer today.

And I agree AOEII was the best thing since sliced bread. The only problem was that the games actually took too long. If they could have found a way to cut out like 45 minutes of the game, that would have been great. Online skirmishes in RA3 take like 10 minutes-15 minutes at pretty much any skill level (or 5 minutes if you get a successful rush)

AOEII took at least an hour. Still a great game though.

What mifs me is that C&C 4 is the last in the series why not play guinea pig on another title! EA really are idiots sometimes. They were bound to get quite a few buying it for the story alone and it being such a historic RTS means it ought to be untouchable in terms of how it is played to avoid losing the huge and aging following it has or should now say HAD.

Speaking of Dune I happen to be re-playing emperor battle for dune at the moment :)

I remember watching a developer's interview for C&C4, and they said that base building was an optional process for the player depending on their faction and playing style. Some people apparently want to forego the base-building and go straight into the fighting.

This is exactly what THQ did with DoW2. Well this and completely nuking any part of "Strategy" from the game since you just move 4 units around a small map doing the same thing over and over lol.

On top of no bases C&C 4 requres an always on internet connection. Even in the SP campaign. Ya that makes a lot of sense?

I think this game is totally butchered. Oh well, I won't buy it.

Ha ha totally agree. RA3 is a blast! :D

That's what I like about those other RTS's like AoE 2. I don't like the rushes. To me it's just build up as much as you can as quickly as you can and whoever can click the mouse fastest wins. I prefer to build up an army of a multitude of different units and spend some time working out a strategy other than build build build destroy destroy destroy.

I see the appeal of games like RA3 or C&C3 but not really my style.

Indeed but it seems the developers don't want to cater for us more old school gamers :(

Talking of AoE 2 that game makes awesome co-op lan games even to this day! I remember taking on 8 computer enemies with just 1 friend lol wasn't on hard thankfully though haha

I LOVE Generals, especially Zero Hour. It has its quirks but easy to get into, has a good pace, enough to think about what your doing, but fast enough to make things progress without waiting.

I do wish they made a Generals sequel. Just update the graphics and fix some of the annoyances and improve the AI a bit. Generals is one of my favorite all time games.

C&C Generals: Zero Hour is pure awesomeness. :)
Only thing i would complain about is buggy / laggy multiplayer and poor preformance when you spam the map with units. xD

Maybe EA could port it to the RA3 engine?

    thats weird...

i bought the deluxe edition for like $30 YEARS ago, loved it. classic.

I really like RA3 though, because I grew up playing red alert, and RA3 is good old C&C in a fun, very funny, and not too serious setting.

They're both great. I'd have to side with AoE 3 though.

AoE 2 is great for netbooks though. Runs like a charm, only it doesn't support widescreen which kinda sucks, but oh well.

I've never played AoE3, but I've heard it wasn't bad. Even still, I would take a guess and say AoE2 is better, simply because AoE2 was a classic game, AoE3 had a lot to live up for, and no matter how good it was, it wasn't the original (I know AoE1 was the original, but AoE2 ironed out the kinks)

I tried AoE 3 and didn't like it at all but love AoE 2. Just got bored quickly with the third game, I think it must have been a bit unbalanced and worse put together than its predecessor as Bog suggests.
