Looking at a N73JQ-A2. Wanted to know how the GeForce GT 425M stacks against other graphics? Will it play all new games for a few years? I don't need high graphics, mostly I would like to just keep up with gaming and photo editing. I looked at benchmarks I just wanted to see what opinions you guys/girls have?

Also, how is a 1600x900 screen. I had an ASUS Z71 with a WSXGA screen. Will I notice a difference, or would it be worth looking into the G73 or another 1080p screen. I have about $1300 to spend. Thanks!

the requirements for gaming and photo editing are different. in general, however, the GT400 series of mobile GPUs are quite capable for all games tuned at modest settings as well as photo editing tasks.

you also mentioned CAD and, i assume, DCC (digital content creation) in your thread title. for applications like CAD and DCC it's more about the drivers and firmware than the actual hardware. if you're serious about these types of application i would go for a notebook with the NVIDIA Quadro family of mobile GPUs http://www.nvidia.com/page/quadrofx_family.html because of the driver / firmware support.

I agree. I don't think that I need a Quadro since most the programs I use don't have issues with DCC. Thanks for the comment though.

So the 425M is a bit weak for games then. I am looking at the benchmarks, yeah it looks lower, but can't really quantify it.

Will it be noticeable poor graphics for games. Like not worth getting? or will it just be toned down a bit?

    Thanks.

The benefit of HD5870M is that you get the current 2nd best gaming GPU for laptops after the GTX 480M.

But the bonus is that you can softmod the HD5870M into a FirePro and get between 4-8X the performance in 3D/Design software using OpenGL.
