Can My Notebook Run It? How does X Graphics Card Compare?
last updated: 27 AUG 2010
If you'd like to know if your notebook can run a game, this is the right place!
Some things to note before you post:
- Integrated video cards are NOT meant for gaming. Don't expect much from them.
- This thread is also meant to ask for laptops that you don't own yet, but would like to know how they will perform
In order to determine if you computer can run a certain game we need your specs. Please provide the following in either your post or signature:
--Start Example--
CPU:
GPU:
RAM:
Display (resolution):
--End Example--
Under "Display", please make sure to indicate your native resolution.
Also, make sure to let us know specifically what games you would like to play. You can ask a more direct question such as "Can I run this game at high settings?", or a more general question like "At what settings can I run this game?". We'll do our best to help.
And that's it! Your final post should look something like this:
For more information, see the following:

Hey all-
I'm in the market for a new laptop, and I can get a pretty good deal on a Dell Studio XPS 16 machine... right around $1500 for:
CPU: Core i7-720QM (1.6GHz)
GPU: Mobility Radeon HD 5730 (1GB)
Memory: 6GB 1333 MHz DDR3 RAM
Screen: 1920x1080 Native
Do you think the 5730 would be enough to run games like Battlefield Bad Company 2 and Starcraft 2 when it comes out at mid-high settings? I like gaming but I've never been a huge stickler for perfect graphics etc. I can hold out and look for a better graphics card but that machine is pretty tasty for $1500...
Let me know what you think!
Thanks,
JD -
If you plan to play at such native resolution the card might fall a little short on performance.
-
Something like Newegg.com - MSI GX740-079US NoteBook Intel Core i7 720QM(1.60GHz) 17.0" Wide SXGA+ 4GB Memory 500GB HDD 7200rpm DVD Super Multi ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870 is gonna go alot further then the dell in terms of gaming. Granted smaller native res and a little less ram but thats easily upgradeable.
-
Interesting... How's the build quality on MSI machines? I've never actually seen/messed with one in person. I'm also really trying to stick with a 15-16"... any thoughts?

I started a new thread - the old one was over 2000 posts; generally we close threads that large because they can affect server performance.
Link to old thread:

I have also amended the title of this thread to reflect that it should contain all "X graphics card vs Y" comparisons.
Thanks for your patience. -

Hey guys, how well (if at all) can I run starcraft 2?
dell xps m1530
2.4 core 2 duo ghz
4 gigs ram
NVIDIA 8600m GT (I think its 256 mb)
1680x1050 native res
thanks!
EDIT: I'm not TOO concerned about the quality of graphics, as long as everything looks decent. I just don't want to find myself losing fps during big fights and such -

Starcraft II -
-
Thanks a lot for the help.
Would you say it's better to play at low setting with native resolutions or go for medium with 1366X768?
I really wished they had a demo of Starcraft so I could test the different settings myself. -

Sean473 what about at 1920x1080 resolution with those specs?

For all you guys with 8600M GT.

What minimum graphics card should I get if I want to run most games on at least medium for the next 2 years?
Edit: Anyone know what the best graphics card I could get on a 14" laptop is? Thanks. -
I know its a long shot but here goes:
Starcraft 2
Processor: AMD Athlon X2 Dual Core TK-53
Video: Ati Radeon X1270 128 MB
RAM: 2 GB
Its on a Dell Inspiron 1521.
Thanks for any replies, although I'm not hopeful it will run the game. -
Ok i got another one (sorry guys)
Intel® Core2 Duo Processor1 P7350 (2.0GHz, 1066MHz FSB, 3MB L2 Cache)6
Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium (64-bit)7
4096MB 1066MHz DDR3 Dual Channel Memory (2-2048MB modules)8
500GB 5400RPM SATA hard drive3
Chassis with NVIDIA® GeForce® 9800M GTS Graphics with 1GB of GDDR3 Discrete Video Memory and Intel® PM45 Chipset8
It's the gateway p7815u fx
Will this run battlefield bc2 on med-high? (mostly high detail settings)
i'm just lookin for some cheap eye candy -
Quick question: how powerful is the ATI 5730? Relative of mine is going to get that card in the soon-to-be-purchased Studio XPS 16 and I'd like to know if it's decent enough to run modern and slightly older games with highish settings.
-
So im trying to sort out the differences between two notebooks
1) HP Envy 14
CPU: i5-450M
GPU: ATI 5650 (locked at 450MHz)
RAM: 4GB
Display: 1600x900
2) Clevo B5100M (Sager NP5125)
CPU: i5-450M
GPU: Nvidia 330M GT
RAM: 4GB
Display: 1920x1080
So in the gaming world, what would be the differences between the two cards? I know the 5650 is more powerful anyway and teamed with the lower resolution screen it would mean I get more FPS but does anyone have a rough idea on how many?
The games I normally play right now include:
Team Fortress 2/Counter-Strike, Starcraft II, Company of Heroes, Mass Effect 2, Command & Conquer, Dragon Age: Origins and Diablo 3 when it eventually comes out! So if anyone can translate the question to any of those games, then it would really make things easier for my (tiny) mind to understand! -
-
Surely they wouldn't of put the card in the machine if it wasn't capable at some level?
I don't think we can get Gateway over here and Acer's build quality is something i've always been wary of, plus I don't think it has switchable graphics, does it? -
You asked about the difference, lets say that HP would be 20-30% faster than Clevo in respective native resolution. I'd go with HP. This time.Hope this helps you.

I'm looking into buying the ASUS G50Vt-X5.
General specs are:
ASUS G50VT-X5 Core 2 Duo P7450 2.13 GHz 15.4-inch HD Gaming Notebook
4 GB DDR2 SDRAM
320 GB hard drive
DVD±RW DL drive
Integrated NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GS w/512 MB GDDR3 VRAM
Im looking into buying it refurbished for $500. What do you think of it? Can this computer play games like SC2 easily? -
Which one of these laptops is better for gaming?
1. ASUS G60VX-RBBX05
Intel Core 2 Duo P7450(2.13GHz, FSB 1066MHz,L2 Cache 3MB)
4GB DDR2
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M 1GB DDR3 VRAM
16" 1366 x 768
2.Gateway NV79C47u
Intel Core i5 450M(2.4GHz)
4GB DDR3
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650
17.3" 1600 x 900
Looking to play Mass Effect 2, Starcraft 2, Battlefield BC2, COD:MW2 -
What are your guys' thoughts on the ati mobility 5730 vs. the nvidia 9800m gts?
EDIT: Well since the cpu's have impact on performance-
it's basically this: lenovo IdeaPad Y560(0646-2EU) NoteBook Intel Core i7 720QM(1.60GHz) 15.6" 4GB Memory 500GB HDD 5400rpm DVD±R/RW ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5730
or this: gateway p7815u FX - Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor1 P7350 (2.0GHz, 1066MHz FSB, 3MB L2 Cache)6
Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium (64-bit)7
4096MB 1066MHz DDR3 Dual Channel Memory (2-2048MB modules)8
500GB 5400RPM SATA hard drive3
Chassis with NVIDIA® GeForce® 9800M GTS Graphics with 1GB of GDDR3 Discrete Video Memory and Intel® PM45 Chipset8 -
Edit: I'd go with the Gateway. -
would the gateway perform better overall in bc2 than the lenovo?
-
-
Would dx11 support really make a difference? It's basically the only reason i can't decide between those 2 computers ><
-
-
ASUS N61JQ-X1 NoteBook Intel Core i7 720QM(1.60GHz) 16" 4GB Memory DDR3 1066 320GB HDD 7200rpm DVD Super Multi ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5730
Will the above laptop run SC2 on Ultra at 1366 x 768? Thanks for the info. -
I would like to know if i can run Starcraft 2 on my laptop, specs are as follows:
HP Pavilion dv7-1448dx 17 inch Laptop
- AMD Turion X2 Dual-Core Mobile Processor,
- 4GB DDR2 memory (expandable to 8GB),
- 320GB SATA hard drive (5400 rpm)
- ATI RADEON HD 3200 graphics RS780M
- I am not sure the resolution, other than its a 17 inch screen
Thanks -
As far as DX11 goes, the 5730 is too weak to even run it in most games. -
Can my laptop run Crysis and SC2 decently at 1280x800 res?
HP Pavilion DV7 3067CL
CPU:AMD Turion II Ultra Dual-Core Mobile M600(2 CPU's) @ 2.4GHz
GPU:ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650 1024 meg DDR3 version
RAM:4 gig's DDR2-800
Display:1600x900 native res
Thanks. -
Crysis will probably at run at that resolution if most settings are on low -
Thanks for the advice, I'll be needing more knowledge when the time comes to replace my current laptop in a few months. -
Hi, I'd like to know what settings I'll be able to Run SC2 on the following computer:
Operating System: XP Home Edition (5.1, Build 2600)

CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T7400 @ 2.16GHz (2CPUs)
RAM: 2046 MB
DirectX Version: 9.0c
GPU: ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 256MB
17" Monitor, not sure what Native resolutioin is (currently set to 1920x1200)
Thanks!
