Can My Notebook Run It? How does X Graphics Card Compare?
    last updated: 27 AUG 2010

If you'd like to know if your notebook can run a game, this is the right place!

Some things to note before you post:
    • Integrated video cards are NOT meant for gaming. Don't expect much from them.
    • This thread is also meant to ask for laptops that you don't own yet, but would like to know how they will perform

In order to determine if you computer can run a certain game we need your specs. Please provide the following in either your post or signature:

    --Start Example--

    CPU:
    GPU:
    RAM:
    Display (resolution):

    --End Example--

Under "Display", please make sure to indicate your native resolution.

Also, make sure to let us know specifically what games you would like to play. You can ask a more direct question such as "Can I run this game at high settings?", or a more general question like "At what settings can I run this game?". We'll do our best to help.

And that's it! Your final post should look something like this:

    Hey all-
I'm in the market for a new laptop, and I can get a pretty good deal on a Dell Studio XPS 16 machine... right around $1500 for:

    CPU: Core i7-720QM (1.6GHz)
GPU: Mobility Radeon HD 5730 (1GB)
    Memory: 6GB 1333 MHz DDR3 RAM
    Screen: 1920x1080 Native

Do you think the 5730 would be enough to run games like Battlefield Bad Company 2 and Starcraft 2 when it comes out at mid-high settings? I like gaming but I've never been a huge stickler for perfect graphics etc. I can hold out and look for a better graphics card but that machine is pretty tasty for $1500...

Let me know what you think!

    Thanks,
    JD

If you plan to play at such native resolution the card might fall a little short on performance.

Interesting... How's the build quality on MSI machines? I've never actually seen/messed with one in person. I'm also really trying to stick with a 15-16"... any thoughts?

teh MSI GX740 is a great deal but ur better off with an Asus G73 or Sager NP8760.. the Asus G73 is actually quite good build quality and runs quite quiet.. Sager has great case and excellent cooling but runs loud... but overall IMO , G73 is better because of great ram expansion (up to 16GB ) better audio system etc..

Hey guys, how well (if at all) can I run starcraft 2?

    dell xps m1530
    2.4 core 2 duo ghz
    4 gigs ram
NVIDIA 8600m GT (I think its 256 mb)
    1680x1050 native res

    thanks!

EDIT: I'm not TOO concerned about the quality of graphics, as long as everything looks decent. I just don't want to find myself losing fps during big fights and such :)

They're about equal. The GateWay might run it a little better due to the Core i5 obviously being faster than the i3. I'm not sure that either will run on full high settings, though. You might need to turn down the resolution.

At 1280X800 should run on med but seriously , u need more video memory..

the gatewat will be better as u can OC the GPU more and the CPU is better..

    low-med settings at 1280X800..

    it will be low settings..

low settings at native and med at 1366X768..

Thanks a lot for the help.

Would you say it's better to play at low setting with native resolutions or go for medium with 1366X768?

I really wished they had a demo of Starcraft so I could test the different settings myself.

Quick question: how powerful is the ATI 5730? Relative of mine is going to get that card in the soon-to-be-purchased Studio XPS 16 and I'd like to know if it's decent enough to run modern and slightly older games with highish settings.

So im trying to sort out the differences between two notebooks

    1) HP Envy 14
    CPU: i5-450M
GPU: ATI 5650 (locked at 450MHz)
    RAM: 4GB
    Display: 1600x900

    2) Clevo B5100M (Sager NP5125)
    CPU: i5-450M
    GPU: Nvidia 330M GT
    RAM: 4GB
    Display: 1920x1080

So in the gaming world, what would be the differences between the two cards? I know the 5650 is more powerful anyway and teamed with the lower resolution screen it would mean I get more FPS but does anyone have a rough idea on how many?

The games I normally play right now include:
Team Fortress 2/Counter-Strike, Starcraft II, Company of Heroes, Mass Effect 2, Command & Conquer, Dragon Age: Origins and Diablo 3 when it eventually comes out! So if anyone can translate the question to any of those games, then it would really make things easier for my (tiny) mind to understand! :D

i would go with native but u have to adjust and see.. i usually use native res but it depends on how the game looks on the 2 different settings and res.
no hope.. get a 5870 if u want to play on full HD specs..

i don't think so.. the cards too old..

should do so... just needs a better CPU...

5650 will be best.. anyways GT330M will not work at full HD anyways but 5650 should work well but with it being locked , consider acer or gateway 5650 or sony one.. they can be oced at least but gateway one is oced most.

What do you mean it won't work at Full HD?
Surely they wouldn't of put the card in the machine if it wasn't capable at some level?
I don't think we can get Gateway over here and Acer's build quality is something i've always been wary of, plus I don't think it has switchable graphics, does it?

You can say it's in the upper mainstrean or lower enthusiast level. It's a decent card. You can play on highish but it all depends on the resolution that it is going to be played on and on the CPU a bit. Just remember that shados and AA and AF reduces performance the most.

He probably meant to say that it won't work or be as fast as the other one while playing games. Everything else pretty much will work normally at FHD with that nvidia 330M.
You asked about the difference, lets say that HP would be 20-30% faster than Clevo in respective native resolution. I'd go with HP. This time. :D Hope this helps you.

What are your guys' thoughts on the ati mobility 5730 vs. the nvidia 9800m gts?

EDIT: Well since the cpu's have impact on performance-

    it's basically this: lenovo IdeaPad Y560(0646-2EU) NoteBook Intel Core i7 720QM(1.60GHz) 15.6" 4GB Memory 500GB HDD 5400rpm DVD±R/RW ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5730

Yes it can, no worries. You do know that it is an older laptop with older technology GPU & CPU.

Asus is faster in terms of gaming BC of its better graphic card. The downside of it is that the GPU is older thech and doesn't support DX11. Also has old CPU compared to Gateway.

9800M is faster but, same as previous answer, it's old tech, doesn't support DX11.

Edit: I'd go with the Gateway.

Depends on the resolution it is played. If it's same res, then no. My first answer was if they are at same res.

For SC2, nope. DX11 is pretty new so not many games support it yet.

The 9800M GTS is a full tier above the 5730. Choose the 9800M every time.

As far as DX11 goes, the 5730 is too weak to even run it in most games.

    Low settings

SC2 should run just fine at that resolution

Crysis will probably at run at that resolution if most settings are on low

It's my relative's laptop, not mine. If it's at a higher class than my 8600m GT was 3 years ago then both of us will be satisfied. Relative doesn't play games like Crysis or GTA, toughest game available is CivIV and that won't be a problem with the i7 configured in the system. I still have no idea what resolution comes with the laptop but it'll likely be 16:9 and that can be downsized in the near future as games get more demanding.

Thanks for the advice, I'll be needing more knowledge when the time comes to replace my current laptop in a few months.
