How will the HP Envy 15 do on upcoming games in the next 2-3 years?
Also, I know it can handle current games, but at what settings could it play Battlefield: Bad Company 2, Starcraft 2, and Mass Effect 2? Thanks.

I am going to say that it will last a while... It has a very high end card and doesnt have problems maxing out games with the native res... I would say it would stay that way for the next year or so and even later, I'm sure it will still do that performance.

Mass Effect 2 can be maxed out with no problems

Star Craft can be played on high with 40 or so FPS and Ultra pushes around 25 or so.

How does the laptop HD 5450 compare to the desktop version? I looked at some specs and, strangely, the laptop version had a slight lead in terms of clock speed. (nearly everything else was equal)

Don't know a lot about all of this and what the numbers and everything mean. Can the Envy 14 run world of warcraft and further to the expansion on max settings? If not max settings, is it good enough to play with no lag and graphics that do not have square floor textures (if you know what I mean). If not, are there other better laptops to play this on? Price range is around 1000

    Envy 14
-Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
    -Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-370M Dual Core processor (2.40GHz, 3MB L3 Cache)
    -4GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
-320GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
-1GB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 5650 switchable graphics [HDMI] - For Dual Core Processors

    World of Warcraft System Requirements
-Dual-core processor, such as the Intel Pentium D or AMD Athlon 64 X2
-1 GB RAM (2 GB for Vista users)
-3D graphics processor with Vertex and Pixel Shader capability with 128 MB VRAM Such as an ATI Radeon X1600 or NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT class card or better
-15 Gigabytes or more free hard drive space is required

This may be the system requirements for Cataclysm:
    OS: Windows XP/Vista/7

How long before the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 and an Intel Core i5 450M can't handle gaming on medium with some low settings?

Also, I was looking around more and I read that it basically can't run FFXIV? Won't future games be more demanding than FFXIV, or is there something weird about it?

I'm thinking of buying a laptop but I'm not sure which specs to go for. The games i'm looking at are source (TF2, L4D2), 2142, and Starcraft 2

    dv6tse - i7 740m (good CPU for RTS like SC2), ATI HD 5650

    dv6tse - i5 540m (less CPU more battery life), ATI HD 5650

How well would each run the games? More so the i5 one. Battery life worth performance trade?

Those games will run fine at least on high settings on both of those setups. If you really need battery life then go for the i5 but if you are one of those people(like me) that have their laptop on AC power the whole time then go for the i7. :p

You should be fine with Civ4, it's more CPU dependent:
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200 Review

Civ5, I wouldn't put too much hope in it until we see some real actual gameplay footage. I heard it will have scalable system requirements, so let's wait and see.

    Good day, people.

    Acer Aspire AS5740G
    CPU: i5-430M at 2.26GHz
GPU: HD 5470 512Mb up to 2 Gb
    RAM: 4 Gb DDR3
    Display: 1366 x 768

and ACER Aspire AS5745G, with same ram, display and cpu, but having a GT330 1GB DDR3 GPU.

Their price is about the same here, in my country. Which one will do better with StarCraft II?

I'm not a gamer, but I've been waiting for this product, as a longtime fan of Blizzard. :)

    Thank you.

Hello all, first time poster, but I have been hunting around these forums quite a bit lately while hunting for a new gaming laptop.

I am thinking about getting this one:

    Gateway P-7815u FX LX.W4302.010 Laptop Computer - Intel Core 2 Duo P7350 2.0GHz, 4GB DDR3, 500GB HDD, DVDRW, 17 WXGA+, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit at TigerDirect.com

It seems like a great machine at an amazing price. I'm not looking for an amazing computer obviously (Nothing that can play Metro 2033 on maxed settings, or something like that), just a solid gaming laptop for under $1000.

Anyways, I was wondering how well this laptop could play Fallout 3, Oblivion, and Starcraft II.

Looking around, it appears that the GPU is fairly decent, but my issue is the CPU. It is only 2.0 Ghz, those games recommend 2.4+ Ghz.

Tiger Direct also has another laptop:

    Gateway P-7908u FX LX.WEJ02.003 Laptop Computer - Intel Core 2 Duo P8700 2.53GHz, 4GB DDR3, 500GB HDD, DVDRW, 17 WXGA+, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit at TigerDirect.com

This one costs $170 more, but offers a 2.53 Ghz CPU, and a better GPU.

    ---------------

So will those games play well on the first computer (Highest smooth settings, etc.)? Or should I shell out the extra $170.

    Thanks for your time.

Yep, go with GT330M, it's DX10 only (HD5470 is DX11). But performance wise, GT330M is better than HD5470 by miles in some games.
With SC2, GT330M should be able to handle it (30FPS) at medium graphics quality at lower resolution, i.e. your native resolution of 1366x768 or lower.

One more question: what do you think of ACER eMachines eMG730G (i3-330M 2.13GHz, 3Gb DDR3 RAM, HD5650 1Gb DDR3), compared to those two, I've mentioned above?

The first laptop, with 9800m gts, shouldn't have any trouble playing Oblivion and Fallout 3 at max, 720p, and at 30FPS+. With SC2, you are looking at mostly high settings (not ultra), maybe with shadow at medium, at 30FPS+.

You really can't go wrong with either laptop - with the first one priced at $750 and the second laptop being obviously more powerful.

But if I were you, I'd definitely cough up that $170 and get the second laptop with GTX260m. With that laptop's specifications, you can play almost any current games at max, it's definitely more future proof than the first laptop.

    Notebookcheck: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M

    So, go for it.

    Much appreciated TomTom.

You do have a valid point about the 2nd one being more future proof than the first.

I probably will get the 2nd one.

It's safe to say, that Acer Aspire AS5740G with HD5470 is out of the question.

Between the ACER Aspire AS5745G with GT330m and eMG730G with HD5650, it's kind of a tough choice:

Judging from GPU bench and performance alone, HD5650 is better than the GT330m in most games, plus, it's DX11 ready (not that it really matters when it comes to DX11 tessellation performance on a mid-high range laptop graphics card)

Notebookcheck: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650

The real bummer is that, eMG730G comes with a core i3-330M, which is obviously slower than the i5-430M that AS5745G has. And when it comes to SC2 (or any RTS games), that extra CPU power will definitely help with the performance. But on the other hand, i3-330m being less powerful of the two, will yield you with good battery life.
It's really up to you to make the decision, CPU vs. GPU.

I don't know what to say...if you had to choose from these two, which one would you pick up? (keeping in mind that the battery life is not a factor, that other powerful resource-consuming software, like After Effects or Cinema 4D is not used and that this laptop is not being bought considering upcoming games...it will be a mobile workstation, that can support SCII, among other things)

You will be fine at max. Shadows with draw distance are the killer in WoW, all other textures, etc, are not a problem. What is the resolution for the Envy 14? 1600x900? You will be fine.

    hello all,

I am planning to get a Acer 3820TG, i5 520m with 5650, this is my more or less decision haha..it will be used to play mostly:

    1. Starcraft 2
    2. Mass Effect 2
    3. upcoming Fifa 11 & PES2011

After reading up, I know the laptop should be able to handle the above comfortably on med settings but my question is, how will it fare if I connect the laptop to my 24" Dell monitor? resolution would be either 1680 x 1280 or 1900x1080. Advice appreciated. Thanks!

p.s. I might have gotten the resolutions combinations wrong, always have trouble remembering them :p

nope.. really it will be on really low settings and res.. this laptop is not for gaming and anyways , the Athlon M300 is at 2.0GHz..
the GT330M.. but u loose DX11 which isn't a great deal on 5470 because its too weak to use it.

second one really.. gaming wise , the GPU is better.
it should work on 1680X1050 but not on full HD.. u might need an ATI 5870 for that..

should run on medium-high... but depends from game to game..

you should be able to if native res is 1366X768.. might even run on high.

no, it will be on very low-settings.. not worth buying it if it is going to do so.

easily..might even do it on max settings..but look for one with full HD screen.. this HD+ res is crap on 18.4 inch...

Could you recommend a better laptop?

The only other Toshiba with a higher res. is 1800, which is a bit over my budget...

Is 1680 by 945 really that bad?

I like the computers at costco...

    http://www.costco.com/Common/Category.aspx?whse=BC&Ne=5000136&eCat=BC|84|56670&N=4017745+4294899772&Nr=P_CatalogName:BC&Ns=P_Price|1||P_SignDesc1&lang=en-US&topnav=

Would any of these be better? The Dell 17 has a 4650...

Getting a budget laptop for gaming purposes might be a bad idea. You need an adequate cooling and decent build quality to handle games (in addition to pure specs).
    I'd recommend Clevo notebooks:
    15"
    17"
As you can see the price isn't too high but the beast will handle 90% games @max settings. The cooling is supreme, BTW.
