just curious, i looked at the option of texture settings in cod5 (its the same as cod4) and they are set to "automatic" ... i was wondering how the game determines what is the best texture settings... or if i should just set it to manual and adjust it myself? will i get any extra fps by adjusting this? thx

Ultimately, only the developer of COD5 knows the answer to that question, but I would imagine that they are running a brief benchmark or querying the CPU and GPU types and then configuring the settings based on a table in their software. They probably didn't spend a huge amount of development time on this feature, but it probably is also a pretty good rough guess. There's certainly no harm in trying some different settings.

You can click manual and see what the settings are at. If you have anything half-way decent they are probably set at high or whatever the setting is after that.... extreme?

You probably wont see any immediate change in fps but when there's alot on screen your gpu could start to struggle to output all of those textures at higher settings. Gameplay may also seem more "jittery" than with a lower texture setting.
With a decent 128bit GDDR3 gpu you can probably set textures to high on most games(at a lower resolution). -
i have tried Manual Extra VS Automatic, no Visual difference, i think the game acts depending on the Vram

I would suggest that the game examines the system/runs a small benchmark which analyses a) the available graphics memory, and b) the width of the bus and then makes a decision accordingly. This takes into account the fact that even if a GPU has 512MB+ of VRAM (which would support the 'ultra' texture setting, I imagine) it's not going to be able to utilise that properly if it is linked to a lowly 128 bit bus.
Like WILLY S noted, you'll find that if you set a texture setting too high for your card you'll experience 'stuttering' that is different to the usual slow performance you get if you set other graphics options too high.
