Sources tell us that the upcoming Call of Duty 5 game in development is already playable, and currently going through quality assurance.

Treyarch is also said to be the developer, and the title, we're told, is set in a WWII Pacific environment and will be using Call of Duty 4's engine, the same engine on which the upcoming James Bond: Quantum of Solace movie game is being built.

Yesterday, on the company's call to investors, Activision publishing CEO Mike Griffith said CoD5 would be coming to Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC and DS, in addition to a return for the franchise to PS2 and Wii for the first time in two years.

They should do a much more in-depth game of the Seige of Stalingrad. That would be intense.

This switching between Infinity Ward and Treyarch thing is pissing me off. Treyarch really screwed up Call of Duty 3 to admit. The SP had been ok, but the multiplayer was pretty bad. For that, I kinda lose my trust in Treyarch...

P.S. Why WWII? It's not like I have a problem with WWII games (I like them). It's the fact that so many WWII FPS games have released over years up to the point in which they are the kind of games less preffered to be seen as games come out...
And its odd how its like COD-COD3 is WWII, than COD4 to modern, than COD 5 to WWII again. Whats gonna happen after that? Call of Duty 6: MW2? Thats really stupid...

I actually wouldnt mind another WWII setting, if its just like CoD4 but with older guns and suchand a really good plot it could be just as good of a game

it is a shame if they revert to WWII again. the guns used in WWII have all been made as realistically as they ever will be, so what is the point? WWII is all fished out, as far as fps gaming is concerned.

    Modern warfare ->ancient warfare?
The engine is a heavily moddified Quake 3 engine if I`m not mistaken, but the game looks awesome indeed.
So COD5 will still be playable for the ones who had COD4...
    Nice.

It's WWII because Americans cannot identify with wars of other countries. You get WWII or Iraq/Gulf War. Also USA loves their bragging rights about WWII, they did not win Vietnam and Korea is all but forgotten... and what happened in the end over there?

So anyways it's hard to have a game where you play a patriotic infused war machine that wages it's battle for freedom and ends up high-tailing it's 4SS back to the states from defeat.

Also since it's called Call of Duty (a rather cliche US moniker) it would be kind of weird if it was set in the French Revolution. I agree that it would be cool to have a CoD game based on something other than a major US war effort, but alas we are denied

that doesn't explain why they couldn't just make up a war/operation...like in Crysis. (but thats in the future)

*EDIT* Actually, if you think about it now the CoD4 storyline is also made up... Maybe they're rearranging history a bit in this new game? That'd be cool.

COD4 had a totally fiction-based plot, there is a limit to the amount of stuff you can get from actual events like ww2.

I was actually hoping that they would bring out a COD4 expansion pack. Perhaps fighting in South America or in the Asia/Pacific. So many 'modern' weapons were left out of COD4, it was too narrowly focused on old Soviet and Modern US weapons. What about the modern Russian assault rifles, Chinese and European weapons?

actually i quite dissagree...........how many decimals are there between 0 and 1? infinite i believe...........with ww2 the small scale action is so varied (and much of it unrecorded) that you could make up anything that could fit. there is so much in ww2 that hasn't been covered (screw d day after MOHAA level 3 you don't need to do it again). i would really love the russian front, or 1940 france or the balkaans.

i have to agree.........i hate jungle fighting.................if it is half realistic it makes for a crappy game of can't see ****/lobbing nades/ and spraying and praying with a machinegun.

I will reserve judgment on another Pacific Assault game till I see it. Maybe Treyarch will give it a fresh spin. I loved the jungle fighting in both Far Cry and Crysis. To me those were the BEST parts of those games. So in defense of the unknown I say ... wait for it :)

Oh sweet jesus lord almighty gawd!!!! I really, really didn't want cod5 to go back to WW2. The perks and weapon customization was awesome, not to mention the multiplayer itself. Cod4 was PERFECT. The only problem i have with cod5 is treyarch and world war 2. How're you gonna customize a thompson?! A "blue tiger" m1 garand?! Darnit...

Why would take a game that made such improvement and gave so much satisfaction and revort back to what failed or didnt even compare to the current. Why do a little Modern/future and base it off the ever upcoming WAR with Iran? Or something similar. That way u have a new/future war that u can make up how u want and keep all the new/updated weapons, perks ect.... Just my 2 cents.

i want a german centered ww2 shooter..........all we need now is a company with the balls to make one.

Yeah how come no one makes a WWII German shooter. At least the Germans kicked the english and american butts over and over again :) I would like to do that. I am dead tired playing as an american hero. Why not include the Winter War between Finland and Russia, that would make an awesome game.

WW2 ? It's like taking a game franchise from the butcher.... giving it a breather and a day's glory (COD4) and then back to the butcher again! Not that WW2 is bad... But I'm sick and tired of all the WW2 games... at some point I LOVED the old weapons, now I hate them.... I among other fans can't get enough of COD4, and now they want to just leave that and drift away from what's successful ?
Sorry, but I'm just sick to my gut of WW2 games, and furthermore very sick of always playing as an Allied (American or British, generally) soldier... c'mon! Put some spice in the FPS genre! I want a 'Battle for Stalingrad' game!! Or some less familiar war based game!
