So my computer seems to run really hot no matter what. (specs listen in my sig) while monitoring the temp, (with a laptop fan added) my GPU stays around 60C while idle and when playing even lower end games (Battlefield 2142) it goes to almost 85C (nothing is over clocked at all) My CPU idles at around 45C and get to 60C while playing the same games. is this normal? is this safe? if not, what can i do about it? like i said, those temp readings are WITH an extra 2 fans.

Those temps are ok, it's the load that's important. While idle temps are a bit high, it could depend on a lot of factors. What is your ambient room temperature? How old is the notebook (are the vents dusty?) Does it feel very hot?

I bought the Laptop a little less then a year ago, i just recently got a can of air and blew clean all the vents and currently its about 70F (about 20C) in the room. the laptop itself (especially over the part where the graphic card is located and the main heat vent) gets so hot that it hurts to the touch.

A CPU can withstand until 100C++ only shutdown on its own to prevent overheat damage.
A CPU is normal to have 60C idle temperature.
But 85C gaming temperature without overclock is a little high. However, your GPU is save as well. Basically, 85C or below 85C(I believe this) or below 90C(some people believe this) are all considered safe.

Maybe your GPU and CPU is dusty.
    Try clean them out.

I actually just took the covers off the back of the laptop and blew all the dust out. it is now running with the GPU at 55 and the CPU at 44. I havent tried a game yet but it seems to have helped. thnx :)

Yeah, read the guide and undervolt. I bet you can reduce your temps a further 15 deg C.

Mess around with things, if you dont have a cooler around, get a cd case to prop it up, making sure its not blocking the vents tho.

my m17 got to 85c and got a cooler and brought it to 76c(my gpu) If I dont have the cooler around, a cd sometimes brings it down 5c

CLEAN it first, from the inside using compressed air. Also try to remove the fan and clean the actual heatsink with the compressed air. This reduced my temps by ~10C, after they hit 100C

    Then undervolt the CPU
    Use this guide
I was able to reduce my load temps from 89-95C to around 75-80C just by undervolting my CPU

I have also undervolted my GPU, but this is more tricky and requires you to flash the graphics card, but it reduced my load temps even further
Don't worry about this uness you want to lower your temps eve n further and don't mind taking a few risks [You can totally kill your graphics cared if you do something wrong]

Also, look into raising the back of your laptop to allow for better airflow, or investing in a decent cooler like a Zalman
    Hope this helps
