So I bought a laptop (P170HM) with a 6990M in September. I'm thinking of getting the 7970M if the performance is remotely close to what has been quoted on these forums. However I'm not sure if the current processor that I have, a 2760QM, would be a bottleneck for such a beastly card.

I would advise getting ivy bridge and amd 7970m. Not much real point having some stuff old gen and the 7970m is supposed to be cheaper then nvidia.

you know that you should think before you type.

If the performance increase wasnt so drastic in the gpu range, few people would advise getting a newer gen gpu at only 1 year.

He could gain more battery life at a quite substantial, probable, loss of money. Not that it isnt such an improvement anyway, the battery life on those system is still below average.

Ivy Bridge is like 5-10% faster. Not worth the money if you already have SB.

The GPU jump seems substantial and may be worth it. However, the CPU jump is expected to be relatively unsubstantial and probably won't cover the premium he'd have to pay to upgrade. Mr. MM is completely right.

    Seconded.
The only area where IB matters is in it's IGP performance which is roughly 50% higher than its SB IGP predecessor, and lower power consumption (which again, is relatively marginal for laptops with higher end hardware).

Having a SB cpu wouldn't affect the performance of 7970M at all.

Shakes head...don't you know that overclocking is bad? Especially on a laptop? :p
