I just got CS:S for my Toshiba U300-ns5. The computer is plenty to run the game, besides the x3100 video card. I still understand though, that it should play well on low or medium settings. My problem is that it runs relatively smoothly if I create a server and run around it by myself, but when I get into a game with others it bogs down and is unplayable. I downloaded the driver version 15.4.4 17.14.10.1295. What could be wrong? Should I have the 15.4.3 version of the driver maybe? Also, I have problems on some maps with the ground dissapearing and becoming invisible. I am running on a wireless connection but these problems do not seem to be related to the internet connection. Also, my latency is low, at around 77 or so. I need some advice on this! All I would like to do is be able to play Counterstrike and DoD.

Ground going invisible turning to wireframe is a Steam problem--when go you from an sv_pure 2 server to an sv_pure 1 or 0 server.

Verify your game data via Steam.
-
If verifying it means activating it with the CD key and such, I have done that, otherwise not sure how to verify the game with steam. Sorry, Im not a computer guy, so I also dont understand the first reply by GloStiX

Install the latest drivers for the x3100.
Also, the x3100 is by no means meant as a gaming card, so try setting your resolution to 800 x 600 and setting everything to low or off. -
I have tried, even running it with just myself and a bot on a created server, at the lowest resolution and everything turned low, and it seems that when i am running through tight spaces it is fine, once i get to an open sapce, lots of stuff on screen, it bogs down. I have the latest driver for the x3100, and i know its not a great gaming card but many people say it works. I have a 1.67Ghz core2 duo processor, and 2 GB RAM, as well as about 115 GBs free on my hard drive. It must be the video card, but what can I do? Others running this same card seem to be able to play it, why cant I? Do I need the Beta driver for HW and T&L? What versions are others drivers for this card or is there a trick I should know? I have turned off Anti virus programs and various other background apps, as well as tried running steam as an administrator.

Try this: Set it run in Direct X 8 mode.
Force a DirectX level
This process may help with some older video cards - some users report the game will run faster, as well:
1. Open Steam
2. Go to the "My Games" tab
3. Right-click the game which needs to be reconfigured
4. Select "Properties" from the menu
5. Click the "Set launch options..." button
6. Add one of the DirectX level launch options specified below - be sure to include a space before the "-" and anything before it.
DirectX Level Launch Options
* -dxlevel 90 (DirectX v9.0)
* -dxlevel 81 (DirectX v8.1)
* -dxlevel 80 (DirectX v8.0)
* -dxlevel 70 (DirectX v7.0) -

you should definately try caseys config (google it) if you are getting FPS problems .

Ok, so I have tried a bunch of stuff. First of all, I have played with all the settings, lowering the texture detail and eveything else, and it doesnt seem to help. In fact, running on high settings and a high resolution does not seem to slow it down considerably compared to running it in low settings and a low resolution, both bog down the same. Using a lower directX level I believe may have helped a little, but it is still bogging down. Casey's config did not help at all. It did not increase the FPS at all, in fact it almost seemed to have lowered the FPS, I ran a video stress test and it came out with 17 FPS running the Casey's config. Running the stress test with the highest resolution and high/medium texture levels gave me between 20 and 30 FPS, yet when I get in a game it seems too slow to play. Really, I have no idea what to do or what to try. The only thing I can think of is attempting the Beta driver with HW and T&L. I havent even tried DoD yet, I am afraid to, it will just be more dissapointment. I really just want this to work. Thanks everyone for your advice, though none of it has really helped me. This is a brand new computer I am getting frustrated with this not working.

You need to change your rate settings.
Go to console and type:
rate 25000
cl_updaterate 100
cl_cmdrate 100
Hope this helps! -
You should test what settings work best for you.
the defaults for updaterate and cmdrate are 20 or 30 each I believe. Using too high of a setting may cause your connection to flood and you will get excessive drops.
You can see info on lost packets and etc by using "net_graph 3" -
Ok well, I tried various console commands that I have seen reccomended now. I have tried chainging the cl_updaterate and cl_cmdrate, as well as fps_max and cl_allowupload. When I set the net_graph 3 on it showed my fps at 10. Nothing I did changed that at all, it stayed at 10 fps throughout all the changes in the console and lowering texture levels and shaders and even the resolution, it is stuck on 10 fps.
Also, in the console when in a map, if I scroll up the console it says that it couldn't exec userconfig.cfg. Could that be causing a problem? I dont even know what it means it just looked like something out of the ordinary. -
Well thanks everyone, but I think I got it. I downloaded the Beta driver and it seemes tio have cleared everything up, Im able to run the games on high settings with next to zero lag or choppiness. I think I maybe have had the previous driver installed incorrectly somehow which led to the problems. But again, thanks for all the advice.

Glad you solve it, I'd like to know which drive is it... Where can I find it?
Have just bought a Dell Inspiron 1525 with X3100, the driver installed is the latest, according to both dell and intel sites (updated 01-01-08), and yet I'm stucked between 9 and 10 fps while playing CSS.
Suggestion?
Thank you very much.
