    Hey guys,

I'm pretty much a CS:Source junky, but I decided to play the HL2 Single-player for the first time, and I have to say I am very disappointed with the performance.

In CS:Source I get 60+ FPS almost all of the time, but in HL2 I'm lucky if I level off at 40...I'm using the same Video settings, same resolution and it's very choppy at times. I've even had it lock up a few times (perhaps rendering pauses?).

Anywho, I thought I'd query the field to see if there is a known patch or something I need to apply.

This is a legitimate copy that I downloaded from Steam.

    Thanks!

You shouldn't be having that problem with your rig. I max everything in most source games without any FPS drops. Turn down AA would be my first suggestion, update to Laptopvideo2go.com drivers. Don't worry about patches, steam does that stuff automatically.

That's the thing, my video drivers are up to date (174.74), and I have AA off and AF at tri-linear...it's REALLY choppy at time and I know it shouldn't be that way. I think I'm going to try and go back to 169.09 drivers and see if that helps.

    UPDATE:
I rolled back to 169.25 (from 174.74) and the problem is completely solved...just goes to show the newer is NOT always better =D

thanks for sparking the idea dmac.

i also had problems with the performance of the source engine (including css) with the 174 driver set. 175 solved the issue for me.

Storm, which video card do you have, and which OS are you running. The "goodness" of these drivers seems to vary on those to specs.

P.S. Shout out the Vegas, I'm back here for the summer.
